Why I Burp

For the record, I love every country that has good food. :-)

Hi, my name is Sophia, and I am a human being.

I am real—with real and daily problems, emotions, and thoughts. Here in my blog, I don’t hide or sugarcoat things. You will see me laugh, you will see me excited, happy, and delighted, but you will also see me cry, bitch, grumble, and yes, use the occasional curse words.

I am a college student in Southern California, who somehow foolishly and naively thought she might try to break it into the journalism world. No, I will not ever strike it rich—but I know where my passion lies and I will pursue it. I’m passionate about God, about people, about making a difference, about writing, about food, about experiencing and learning everything I can— and somehow, this blog fits every category mentioned. So yeah, it’s not just a food blog…but then when has food ever just been about food?

After a long struggle with Anorexia, I’ve especially discovered and experienced the many metaphors of food and its functions in life. And that’s where this blog comes along: it’s the chronicle of my adventures and experiments with food within the metaphors of life.

Some other facts about me:

I am Korean, but I moved to Singapore when I was four because my father, a missionary, ministers to the Chinese people. When I turned fourteen, we moved again to America to establish another Chinese church. I guess I would say I am “Korean by nationality and culture, but with Singaporean, Chinese, and American influences significant enough to seriously question that statement.” I speak, write, and read English, Korean, and Chinese: Korean at home with my family, English with friends, Chinese in church.

My favorite food is cheese, sweet potatoes, runny eggs, sandwiches, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and good, artisanal bread, but honestly, I will pretty much eat anything and everything so long as it’s not crap or slimy insects.

I love to cook and experiment with different ingredients, so be prepared for loads of creative recipes. If I had a bit more money, I would eat out more, but I do have occasional restaurant reviews. If you want to treat me lunch, email me. ;-)

Why Burp and Slurp? Tell me, have you met any human being who never burps and slurps? Neither have I. Now, did I not say I am a human being?

Hi – thanks for stopping by my blog!

I am so glad that you are working to overcome you ED. Me – I’m overweight, and been struggling with dieting for most of my life. I was recently diagnosed with a form of hypothyroidism, and placed on medication, so I hope that this will help.

One of my daughters-in-law, is from Korea – a small town just outside of Seoul. She now lives on Long Island. She is a fantastic cook. Her buhlgoki is absolutely wonderful. I’ve heard that in Korea, buhlgoki is like meatloaf, here in the States…everybody has a different recipe!

I’m looking forward to coming back here often!

I love this blog…I’ve battled with an eating disorder for years, and am finally learning to live life healthily and happily. I hope that other women (and men) can realize that being healthy is much more important than just being thin. If you get a chance, feel free to stop by my blog…it’s brand new, so don’t expect too much yet! Thanks!

Nice to meet a trilingual foodie, when I get stuck with a Chinese menu…guess who I’m gonna call?
Seriously, well done with getting back from the back & beyond, otherwise we’d never have met. :0)

Hi
Wish the best of luck from another person suffering through the same thing!
I was wondering if you relapsed when you got out of your second hospitalization? and now you are trying to recover? did i get it straight?

Reply

burpexcuzme April 30, 2009 at 6:54 am

Yes, I relapsed after my second hospitalization, but not straight after. I gained about 35 lbs on my own, but then my college refused to take me in until I gave proof that I went to a treatment center. So I got all angry and depressed and discouraged and relapsed. Smart, eh?

I know what you mean about the whole ethnicity thing. Both my parents are Vietnamese. I was born in California and raised in Florida. Technically I’m American, but my face says otherwise.

Good luck on your food journey. I’ll be hanging around to read more about it. :)

Hey- I just found out about your blog! I’m currently battling a vicious eating disorder- Anorexia binge/purge type and i’m trying my best to get out of it. I’ve been hospitalized several times (against my will) as i’ve been battling this for about 5 years now.
I’m Egyptian, but I live in America- but I am extremely interested in Asian cuisine and culture.

I would love any feedback you have for me or any recipes you’d like to share. I favourited your blog and will be following it from now on :)

Thank you for stopping by my blog. I, too, have ED at the other end of the spectrum. I’ve struggled with my overeating all my life. Here I am at 70+ still trying to get a grip on it.

I truly hope you win and will be praying for you. ED for both of us is deadly. I read your blog on time and restlessness. You will see in my description of myself, the word restless occurs.

I am reading a book I’ve meant to read for a long time. The Purpose Driven Life. I’ve been a Christian for most of my adult life. I feel if I understand God’s purpose for me, even at age 70 my soul will be peaceful.

BTW without knowing anything else about you, as a unilingual (with tiny bit of Spanish), I admire you for being TRIlingual. What a window to the world this opens for you!!!
