Birthday Wonderland

in blog meet-up,eating out,Los Angeles,My story

I apologize once again for missing my Weekend ED posts. This weekend was super busy.

But I’d like to dedicate this post to one of my best buddies, Mimi. It’s her 21st birthday today!! Pretty big deal considering you now have to bear the responsibility not to drink and drive!

Mimi and I had an early birthday celebration. The plan was for me to chauffeur her to the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, grab some random market produce and goods, and make an impromptu “picnic” out of it.

_DSC4679Alas, that was not to be, because we reached the market late and it was closing up by the time we hurdled through the traffic and found a place to park.
_DSC4680Who needs $7 per pint strawberries anyway? Not me. Well, maybe some other weekend after I get my paycheck.

At least we had the new market open at Santa Monica Place.
_DSC4684But we stopped by Mimi’s beloved yogurt place first. And I treated her to a big fat loaded froyo:
_DSC4682How pretty! I made sure she got sprinkles because what is a birthday without sugary multi-colored sprinkles?
_DSC4683The girl loves toppings more than the frozen yogurt itself. I’m the opposite, I hate crowding ice-cream or yogurt with toppings. I eat them for its creaminess, I don’t want any chunky crap in my creamy goodness. Unless it’s sweetened adzuki beans. Mmm…

Back to The Market.
_DSC4686The layout reminded me a lot of San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace. Only it’s more like the jealous, puny little sibling of it. Or a wannabe copycat. What I mean to say is, it’s just not as great. After all, it’s just one corner of the three-storey shopping center as opposed to the entire building.

Not to say it isn’t cool. Any conglomerate of food stores is cool. I even think food courts are cool. This of course is an elevated version of that. You walk in, and you get greeted by Beachy Cream, the playboy bunny of ice-cream.
_DSC4685Click on the link and you’ll see why. I’ll never forget this place since my trip to Artisanal LA.

We stopped by L’Artisan du Chocolat and I demanded that Mimi get something for that evening’s dessert.
_DSC4691Obviously Mimi couldn’t say no. Unfortunately, she picked the most boring thing out of all:
_DSC4687Dark chocolate bark with peanuts. It’s safe to say when it comes to chocolate, Mimi and I have very different views. If chocolate was a form of politics, I would be the left-wing liberal and Mimi would be the right-wing conservative.

The lady in the store was kind enough to give us some samples of these lovely truffles:
_DSC4688It just melted into silk in my mouth.

So here’s Mimi’s second birthday present:
_DSC4689Dark chocolate and creme brulee macaron. I forgot to ask her if she liked it. Hey Mimi, if you’re reading this, care to share how you liked it, reporter form?

There were two stores I was most attracted to at The Market. One was the Norcino Salumeria:
_DSC4693It’s a cheese and salumi Italian delicatessen, apparently the first of its kind in Los Angeles. Check out the sexy fat-ass sausages!
_DSC4694And they even have a chef to carve out choice cheeses:
_DSC4696For my birthday, I’d like a carving plate of assorted cheeses, please.
_DSC4695The second favorite store was of course the bakery:
_DSC4700It’s called Rockenwagner, and I have no idea how to pronounce it. Those Germans. Always such tongue-twisters. By the way, the gnomes are damn scary. Why?!

Probably to scare away pretzel thieves. Because I sure was tempted to heft a bag of these adorable bites away:
_DSC4703How cute are they?! If you don’t agree with me, say “Ayeemideeoyte” three times fast. It’s German.

And to demonstrate their love for pretzels even more graphically, they decked a model out in a pretzel dress:
_DSC4704I don’t care for the dress, but I do covet those shoes.

Rockenwagner also has teeny sandwiches that stole my heart:
_DSC4701Never has a tuna sandwich looked that gorgeous.

For cookie lovers, you might also want to check out Aurelie Cookie Shop:
_DSC4698They call themselves the Cookie Guru, and profess that they make the ultimate chocolate chip cookie.
_DSC4699I love their motto: “A Balanced Diet is a Cookie in Each Hand.” Indeed, but a wonderful diet is a cookie jar in each hand with a pint of creamy raw milk tucked under each arm.

Dear Mimi: Happy birthday, my friend, and I hope you weren’t too sore that we missed the farmers market. Let me remind you, however, that invitation to my friendship is exclusive and you, my dear, are worthy of my grace, and more. :-)

Question of the Day: Pretend it’s your birthday today. What would you do? What would you wish for? There is no charge for imagination!

happy bday mimi! i agree – the market is really lame in comparison to what it’s trying to be. i was just at eataly in NYC and THAT’S the way to do a gourmet market.

rockenwagner is great – they sell at the larchmont farmers market every sunday. the other day the guy dropped a whole bunch of pretzels and pastries and just threw them out. it broke my heart.

Oh, btw, the macaron and chocolate were so yummy! Especially the macaron. It was like a meringuey creme brulee.

Happy birthday to Mimi!! :)

I’m pretty sure I would choose the same two as my favorites: The cheese and bread shops! Those mini sandwiches… DROOL! Love the cheese platter, too. See, I would have probably spent a fortune there because I would have definitely wanted to try one of everything, lol. Then again, after I found the sandwich place I might have just stayed there until they closed. :)

I’m bitter I wasn’t invited
but I love you anyway ;)

I’ll invite you to our next one. Make sure you join us!

And I wasn’t “apologizing” apologizing. It was more like an acknowledgment that I missed a post without going “whatever, I missed a post” because there are people who only read my ED posts, you blog etiquette police. I agree everyone should eat a snickers though. ;-)

Reply

Eden June 27, 2011 at 10:02 pm

And stop apologizing for no ED posts! I think your ED readers can handle it or eat a snickers while they wait.

That market looks glorious! I love hanging out at the SF Ferry Plaza when I’m back home because of all the artisan shops and the delightful farmer’s market outside!
Hmmmm if it was my birthday…well all my meals would have to be absolutely amazing- one meal of Middle Eastern food, one meal of Mughlai Indian and the dessert would have to be my mama’s chocolate cheesecake. I think I would also be somewhere abroad I’ve always wanted to go, like Istanbul! And spend the day roaming about and exploring!

That is one heck of a market and you are a good friend! Not loving the pretzel dress tho!

What an awesome bday celebration! You’re lucky to have such gourmet markets with all those gourmet goodies :)

If it were my bday? Hmm…..stuff myself silly with pound cake and chocolate and cookies while watching a harry potter marathon. That’s just how I roll!

Hope you two had lotsa fun!!

Lauren June 28, 2011 at 3:44 am

Honestly, this would be the BEST birthday present!!!! You certainly know how to treat your friends on their b-days. :)

Happy Birthday, Mimi! Sounds like you had a day of great eats, oh boy! Is that froyo really topped with Froot Loops?? Genius. I have to say, Sophia, I’m more in Mimi’s camp on this one – load me up with sprinkles and chocolate chunks and anything I can get my hands on. That pretzel dress is inventive, but still … I don’t think it would cover all my lady parts.

If it was my perfect birthday, I would spend it traveling and checking out a new country – but I guess I’d have to have a birthday WEEK for that, right? :)

Question: Pretend it’s your birthday today. What would you do? What would you wish for? There is no charge for imagination!

If it was my birthday I would like to do a dance with my friends in the middle of the restaurant where we have lot of cute, beautiful girls having their lunch. Imagination doesn’t cost a penny right ;)

I have not seen fat loaded froyo anywhere in India. This looks interesting. Or might be it was captured using your camera that makes it appear delicious. :) Was a nice post, though a quick read.

I’m glad you share my view on sprinkles. They are just necessary when birthdays are involved!

I always wish my birthday was in the summer so I could have my perfect day- lots of time spend outside in 80 degree sunshine, eating chocolate and spending time with friends. I don’t need fancy stuff, just good food and good company! And good weather, so I should probably move to California, right?

Reply

Sophia June 28, 2011 at 9:32 am

Yes, move to CA. Specifically, LA. I’ll take you out for your birthday too. :-)

My ears perked up at chocolate, but lowered themselves quickly when the chocolate in question had peanuts on it.

&The phrase “sexy fat-ass sausages,” paired with the accompanying photo, makes me feel all sorts of nauseous. Rawwwr.

It’s an Asian dessert thing. I have a super easy recipe here: http://www.burpandslurp.com/2010/03/27/foodbuzz-24-24-24-korean-fusion-street-food-byob/

Don’t buy it in cans, it’s effing expensive!

Reply

Sophia June 28, 2011 at 9:35 am

oh and use REAL sugar! Make sure you do or it just doesn’t taste right.

Reply

Missy June 28, 2011 at 11:51 am

That was an AWESOME LINK!!!! So many goodies in that one. I asked a jackpot question.
Thanks so much!
Your bible study looks like they were a lot of good times.
That “Pizza” = Brilliant, by the way.
Not sure if you know my history with sugar (my ED recovery program put me on a sugar free diet and now I have an irrational fear of it as in – if I have it It will turn me into a monster because I am an addict” So using the real deal is …wow. I’ll have to think about it because I would never bastardize your recipe (0:

Reply

burpexcuzme June 28, 2011 at 7:29 pm

I know…which was why I said that. But it’s about time to face your fears and not avoid them, isn’t it? :-)
The more you avoid them, the more you’ll feel “addicted” to sugar. And you can’t avoid them forever…

Whoop! Happy (belated) birthday to Mimi and keep celebrating!

Hmm, I think that pretzel dress may be a tad risque…

As for my birthday, I like to keep it low key. I like going all out for other people’s though!

Happy Birthday to Mimi!! I would have much rather spent my 21st birthday eating all this delicious food, than doing what I did (college days…..I’ll leave that to your imagination). I love your Froot Loops on your fro yo, classic!
If today was my birthday I would go shopping. I hate to shop, but I’m desperate for new clothes, and I would probably get some money….right?!
