If you’ve been blog-hopping today, you’ve probably already read numerous blogs begging asking you to vote for them as the Next Food Blog Star.
It’s a tough decision, certainly. After posting my own Project Food Blog entry up, I’ve been reading up on some of my Project Food Blog competitors’ entries for the first challenge, and I got two reactions to them:
1) Holy shit. I’m never gonna make it to the next round.
2) Holy shit. I feel so freaking proud to be part of this food blogging community.
Christina nailed it on the head when she told me, “I’ve read maybe 20 entries…and pretty much every one has made me tear up or get goosebumps.”
Then Christina told me that she was going to do a post rounding up all her favorite Project Food Blog entries, and I felt a pang of shame that I selfishly never thought about doing something like that, too.
Because what is the essence of a food blog, after all? It’s about sharing. It’s about passion. It’s about enjoying the taste, community, and culture that food provides. This might be a contest, but in danger of sounding corny…I think everyone is already a winner.
And no matter how much I may want to win, I want the winner to be someone who truly deserves it from the way she or he truly embraces all the positive elements of food.
Following Christina’s incredibly sweet and generous actions, I also want to share some of my favorite Project Food Blog entries. I actually loved every entries I’ve read, but I decided to stick to just 5 entries, so that you guys can share yours, too.
Shout-Out to Some Freaking Amazing Blogs:
1) House of Annie: A blog run by an eclectic, passionate couple currently residing in Malaysia. A new find for me, and I’m freaking thankful to Foodbuzz for that, because their love for food, be it from a packet or made-from-scratch, is so infectious and heart-warming.
Indeed, their blog is all 4U: Unique, Useful, Unpretentious, and Uplifting. Check them out!
2) Tiny Urban Kitchen: I’ve been following Jen’s blog for quite awhile now. She’s very much a community-based blog in Cambridge, Mass. which is all across the nation from me, but I was attracted to her blog because of her unapologetic sense of foodie adventure.
Her photography is amazing, her writing unpretentious, and her travels always fun and informative. This is one foodie who will not shy away from anything food, even if it comes to choking down lambs brains and duck testicles.
3) Salty Seattle: Another new find. Linda is a busy mother and wife who has found her spark in food blogging—and it ain’t just a hobby to pass time. She’s real serious about her food, and pounces on her project head-on, be it molecular gastronomy, or prancing around in a meat dress.
Intrigued? So am I.
4) Gingersnaps: Yeah yeah, whatever, I’m biased, but I still think Mimi is awesome. Scratch that—she is awesome.
I remember when I first met her. She could barely finish a sandwich without half freaking out. Now, this girl would eat anything I put in front of her—including Korean blood sausages (that’s another story). If I send a random text to her saying “Let’s go demolish some Chicken McNuggets”, she would immediately respond, “What time?”
Yes, Mimi has come far. And her blog is undergoing some critical transformations right now. It’s no longer just a diet food blog, which explains why she changed her blog name from Damn The Freshman 15 to Gingersnaps.
I would say that Mimi’s blog is like a timid teenager gaining self-discovery…and regaining confidence and enthusiasm for all the adventures that food has to offer. And I think her new discovery of courage alone deserves a star.
5) Dinner at Christina’s: Another favorite blogger of mine, but my own personal feelings aside, I genuinely think that Christina is a beacon in the food blogosphere.
She is utterly, shockingly without a single dropping of bullshit. I think as humans, we all have a bit of crap in us, and I don’t mean the one you see in the toilet. But Christina…I have yet to catch her violating her beliefs and morals.
When I visit her blog, I don’t get any sense of preachy superiority from her. Instead, I feel like I’m being invited to dinner by a warm, friendly host to a simple family dining table—which is why I think Christina’s blog name is so perfect for what her blog is about: a loving, hearty gathering round the table to break bread over sincere, passionate conversations.
* * * * * *
I stand by what I said. I have barely even skimmed over the well of great food bloggers out there, and the overall sense I’m getting is that we are all champions, in more ways than just food. And I feel so freaking blessed to be part of this community.
Sorry, I’m not quite done gushing yet. Let me just do a final blabbering about this amazing lunch I made with Mimi. As I mentioned, Mimi would eat anything I make, which is great since as you already know, most of the stuff I make just ain’t…normal.
So here’s another wacky recipe for you.
Green Tea “Crepes” with Adzuki & Sweet Potato
Adzuki filling: Green Tea “Crepe”: Green Tea-Miso “Creme”: Additional stuff: Directions: Sautee garlic and onion in a large pan until soft and fragrant. Add in the sweet potato and adzuki beans. Stir to coat. Add the dried figs and ginger, and then stir in enough chicken broth to cover. Bring to a boil, then simmer. Keep adding more chicken broth as the liquid boils down, alternating with the almond milk. Cook until the beans are cooked through and no longer crunchy. Season with cinnamon, salt and pepper. Make the green tea-miso “creme” by blending all the ingredients together. Use enough almond milk to get as thick or runny consistency as you want. Mix “crepe” ingredients together. Set a large frying pan on medium heat, spraying it well. Pour enough “batter” into the pan to make a thin layer. Gently cook on one side, then turn off heat. Plop some adzuki filling into the middle of the “crepe”, then fold it up into a triangle. Gently slide onto a plate. Top with fresh peach/nectarine slices and the green tea-miso “creme”. If you’ve read this post from top to bottom, thank you. I know my posts tend to be longer than the others. I really appreciate all your loyalty, friendship, and warm responses to what I have to share. Thank you, for making me feel like a champion each time I hit “publish”. If you’ve got the time, do hop on over to Project Food Blog, check out all the wonderful contestants there, and vote wisely. Question of the Day: There are 1,890 contestants. I only listed 5. Obviously, my list is woefully lacking. I can already think of several more off the top of my head that I’ve missed out (Yes, each word has a different link…oh come on! You endured this long post, you can check them out individually…you won’t regret it!)
Confession: I messed up the first batch, because instead of folding the “crepe” over the filling, I tried to roll it up like an omelete. And then Mimi had the brilliant idea of folding it into a triangle instead, and success!
This dish was a mix of hits and misses. The hit was that it tasted AMAZING. The filling was smoky, yet complexly sweet from the sweet potatoes and figs. And the adzuki beans were wonderful in here, because it’s got this great blend of savory and sweet undertones.
I loved the “creme” as well, for its intricate flavors. Cool, yet bold with the rich umami flavors from miso, and a freshness from the lemon juice (from my yard!). And of course, the green tea powder just adds that kick of intrigue.
The miss? Well, as you can see, it ain’t that pretty. I had envisioned this beautiful, stunning green crepe, but the green tea powder didn’t blend as smoothly as I wanted with the egg whites.
And I learned that egg whites just don’t cook into a purely white sheet…the edges always turn kind of brown. I might as well have just used whole eggs instead of making Mimi lug her carton of egg whites over.
But hey, that’s the fun of food blogs…most of us aren’t professionals, so we make blunders from time to time. And then we learn from our mistakes. And the best thing? We have an archive showcasing our progress from post to post—all in colorful pictures, too.
So please help me complete it, by listing YOUR favorite Project Food Blog entries! (And the links, if you’re not too lazy, hee hee)

ahhhhh i do not need MORE amazing blogs to follow
i wish i was your roomateeee !
I think if I actually click on all the links you provided, I’d be at my computer for the rest of the day. I really get into following blogs and when I’m forced to vote one against all the others, I can’t choose! I’d hate to not vote just because I’m so indecisive, but it’s also that I’d actually want to look at each and every blog that is in the running just to be fair. And that’s impossible of course. Well, impossible for me. But I do hope that your blog in particular goes on to the next round! So good luck girl!
<3 Tori
Sophia – you are too sweet. Thank you sooo much for the shout out. I really appreciate it. I love your blog (your personal stories, bold personality, and mouthwatering food photography just draw me into each post) and I hope you go really far. You totally deserve it.

Every entry I’ve read so far has been amazing!! In a way, I’m glad I decided at the last minute not to enter, because there are so many other blogs I’d love to see win. So far I’ve loved Allie from Live Laugh Eat’s entry, Andrea from Can You Stay For Dinner?, and Angela from Oh She Glows. I’ve read so many amazing ones though!! Good luck, I’ll definitely be voting for you!

You make my day every single day!
That is very nice of you to recognize some of the other participants!!! I recently found Salty Seattle too, and am very impressed with that site!!
Your friend Christina is totally right! Had I read other people’s posts before I submitted mine, I don’t think I would’ve made mine as goofy. You certainly won’t be getting any goosebumps from me! But seriously, the best thing about this has been seeing how diverse our voices are on the same subject.
Thanks for the links, I love finding new awesome blogs. And hey, don’t worry! you’re AWESOME, you’ll be ranked high in that competition, I’m VERY sure of that
Aww, thanks so much for the shout-out! I was pretty dang close to sniffling. And thanks for showing all these other great blogs–my Reader needs fresh blood!

Holy your green tea crepes sound amazing! I’ve just put in my 6 votes (that’s my lucky number) and you were definitely one of them. Like I said before, great writing, amazing food creations and food porn galore surely has my vote. Plus, you’re not afraid to say what most people are thinking. Honesty is huge in my books! Best of luck in the challenge my friend.
And by the way, since we’re being honest, I usually leave your blog till night time to read cause that’s when I know I won’t be interrupted and have the time to read the whole post cause I know it’s gonna be longer, but worth every minute reading. Hope you don’t mind.
I love this post! Thanks for sharing so many other great bloggers out there that I wasn’t aware of before!
Holy freak, your “wacky” recipe sounds amazing.

Sounds like those are great blogs!
Great idea to share some of your favorite blogs and so nice that you have found some new and awesome ones out there. I think your crepes look so good. You should go pro at plating up food for pictures…not to mention your mad cooking skills could be pro too.
Sophia, thanks for the list of bloggers, some were new to me
Your crepes look great…what a nice treat!
ahhh, the good ol’ adzuki beans are the BOMB. Always loved them in baos ever since I was a child of 3 with a bowl cut and chubby cheeks
lol fact is, red beans are the best!
I’ll be checking out those blogs. And your recipe sounds delicious, and the photos are really pretty.
Sophia, I LOVE that you did this. I feel like there are some blogs that are a little competitive. It’s so nice to see you celebrating other bloggers! Thanks!
I so totally voted for you. Another at the top of my list is “Evil Shenanigans”–in my eyes, she already is a blog star. I love her evil (fattening, sugary, addicting) recipes–lol. I will also be voting for a few that you mentioned–thanks for the introduction!
so true!! voted for you
You think this recipe is too kooky? Bring it on–you know I can take it. I am kooky enough to try this one for sure.
Can’t go wrong with sweet taters and adzuki beans! Oh and I love the sound of your roasted veg recipe from a couple posts ago. Roasted veg is my favorite food in the world, pretty much, so I am jazzed to try your version.
Major props to you for showcasing other people in the Foodbuzz contest. You are a good sport indeed! But credit where credit is due–your own blog deserves tons of votes. Yeah your posts are long, but unlike other long-winded bloggers’ posts, yours never fail to have a point, so I am happy to read them top to bottom.
Keep em coming!
