10 Things I Learned This Summer

August 18, 2010

in blog meet-up,eating out,family,My story,product review,travel

1. Summer passes by too fast.

IMG_5608 Seriously. Where does time go when you’re having fun? I look back and it’s like a blur of fast-forwarding events. Did I really already go to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, New York, and Canada? Am I really going back to school tomorrow already? I’m like that lady in the picture above. I feel like I’ve just started to settle in my nice little chair, and then I’m suddenly asked to leave.

2. There is nothing better to cool off with than ice-cream. Frozen yogurt is nice, but nothing beats real cream and sugar.

IMG_5708 I’ve lost track of how many ice-cream cones I’ve nuzzled this summer. I’ve never loved McDonald’s more. God bless Ronald McDonald and his golden arches.

3. Some friends are…more than friends. They are connections that transcend blood and flesh, influences that will last a lifetime.

IMG_4437IMG_4362A big-ass shout-out to all my spiritual brothers and sisters in Singapore. I still miss you, and pray for you all often.
IMG_4782 4. On the other hand, family will always be family. Even with little contact and loads of drama, you can’t break blood ties.
IMG_4954I learned a lot while visiting my relatives in Korea. I got to visit my grandfather’s grave, and sadly watch my maternal grandparents’ health deteriorate. Mostly, I was surprised by how much love and care I felt for them, despite losing touch for years.

5. On that note, I discovered that meaningful relationships can actually be formed anywhere.

DSC_0291 I think all the amazing people I’ve met through blogging proves my point. Seriously. Wonderful. People.

6.  I will never be able to take economy flights again.
IMG_4928Once pampered, always spoiled. When I start earning my own money, I’m insisting my parents take business class when they go on mission trips.

7. I’ll always be my parents’ baby.

IMG_5705IMG_5698I realize this every single time I come back home from a trip or college. No matter how old I am, I’m always a daughter in my parents’ eyes. Even at 70 with false teeth, I’ll still be my parents’ daughter. It is exasperating at first, but hey, who else is still gonna dote on you even when you’re a brat?

8. Tim Hortons is better than Starbucks.

IMG_5773 Gasp. BLASPHEMY…right? I guess everyone has their preferences, but Canadians really know how to brew a mean cup of coffee.
IMG_5766In case you have no idea what Tim Hortons is, it’s a famous Canadian coffee shop. It’s the Starbucks of Canada. There are some Tim Hortons branches in America, but in Canada…well, you see it dotting the street every mile or so.
IMG_5760They don’t just sell coffee, of course. They also sell bagels and donuts and sandwiches, just like Starbucks. But! As Aletheia so proudly bragged, Tim Hortons also has SOUP. Yes, soup. Like this lovely chicken noodle soup:
IMG_5767 And their sandwiches are fresher, such as this chicken salad sandwich on whole wheat:
IMG_5769 And they even have breakfast biscuit sandwiches, such as this sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit:
IMG_5772 …which came with hash browns! It’s McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, and Starbucks all packaged into one sweet Canadian deal! Woo! Canada rocks!
IMG_5770 Since we’re on the subject of Canada, I did ask my family what they learned from our Canada trip, and here’s what they said:

Dad: “Canada is full of wonderfully kind and friendly people.”

Mom: “Canadian men are hot.” (Okay, she didn’t quite say it in those terms, but that’s what she basically meant)

Brother: “It’s not like the United States. It’s actually its own separate nation!” (I know you Canadians are thinking, duh. But many people seem to think we’re exactly the same because we share the same continent).

Speaking of Tim Hortons…

9. Some chain restaurants will surprise you with how good their food is.

DSC_0753 Case in point, Perkins Family Restaurant. On the last day of our road trip back home, for our last meal out together…we happened to stop by that restaurant. You’re gonna think I’m a brat, but I was a bit miffed. I was hoping since it would be our last meal out together, it would be someplace nicer. Not a freaking chain restaurant! How good can the food be, when it is obviously frequented by nice, but toothless, retired grannies and grandpas?
DSC_0754 Well, the food blew me away. I think the Southern Fried Chicken Platter above should prove the point: Two fresh-baked biscuits filled with a fried chicken fillet and American cheese, topped with cream gravy. Served with two large sunny side-up eggs, two smoked bacon strips and hash browns.
DSC_0755 Heart attack on a plate? Ooh, yes. But if I’m gonna keel over and die, at least I’ll die with a wide grin on my face. I was so convinced that the food would be mediocre, I wasn’t even prepared the take a picture, so my family tucked into their food before I realized I should have taken a picture after all. But my mom got a Home-style Pot Roast that was just as marvelous, and my dad shared some of his butterfly shrimp:
DSC_0761 Even their plain ol’ Chicken Noodle Soup was awesome:
DSC_0757 I think those noodles are  homemade. The broth was rich and intense, none of that watered down, salty Swanson’s crap. You can see it, can’t you? The liquid is golden, which means it’s just full of delicious chicken juices.
DSC_0758

10. When it’s 100 degrees outside and you have no appetite, it’s totally fine to just make a meal out of snacks.

IMG_5628Especially when your snacks come with a healthy serving of vegetables. Terra Chips sent me a few packets of their products to review, and I have to admit, they didn’t last for long in my house. I was planning to bring a couple of them back to LA with me, but none of them made it, because they were just. so. darn. ADDICTIVE!
IMG_5630 I got to try a new product they have, the Terra a la Mexicana: A classic mix of vegetable chips seasoned with a piquant blend of tomato, black bean and roasted garlic flavors.
IMG_5631 Their classic mix comes in an exotic selection of root vegetables: Taro, Sweet Potato, Yuca, Batata, Parsnip, and Ruby Taro. Each one have their own unique flavors: sweet, beety, or nutty in different degrees, but all retaining a perfect crunch and bursting with light, yet vibrant flavors.
IMG_5633 I also loved the Terra Blues: chips made with naturally blue potatoes, with 40 percent less fat than the leading brand of potato chips:
DSC_0089 They were certainly not your average potato chips! The color is brilliant, and the taste has a more earthy, nuttier texture and flavor. And I’ll bet they’ve got a higher dose of antioxidants than the regular potatoes.
DSC_0091 Okay, here’s your chance to win your own basket of snacks. The generous folks at Terra Chips is offering a giveaway—The prize will be valued at $25 and includes four bags of TERRA Chips, TERRA coupons, a martini glass inspired serving bowl and printed Summer Entertaining Guide.

I realized I forgot to say what I’d eat the chips with–definitely with a burger or sandwich or hot dog. To me, those things just require a side of chips! And as for your question, this summer I learned how to get rid of drain flies–by finding the dry pipe they came from, capping/fixing it. No yucky pest control necessary–they come from the sewer and die when there’s no sewage for them to feed off of and no way for any more to come in. Not profound, but I’m glad those darn flies are all dead now. They almost drove me crazy.

exotic harvest chips sound goood! would love to win those.

by the way, i think there’s a tim hortons that opened in the US but it did NOT do well?!

According to their website, Tim Hortons has locations in 11 states. I live in Western New York and we have a lot of them. In fact, I pass 3 in between my house and my workplace and there are 2 Tim Hortons in my school. They do really well here.

It might depend on the location because some areas are more dominated by Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts or other chains.

Nicely done!
I would agree that summer goes by too fast. And I would add that the entire YEAR is zooming by too quickly. To think Thanksgiving is just around the corner again just seems crazy, even if it’s true. ;)

My summer is a distant past and this summer hasn’t arrived yet, but I guess I learned heaps from ‘your summer road trip’ lots. Thanks for so many pics of places I’ve not seen and written up in a way that makes me smile. I’m sad our journey is over….., so …. Ummmm, where to next?

Wow, I cannot believe that summer is almost over. You’re going back to school TOMORROW?! I feel like I’ve learned so much about you this past summer. I loved seeing all of your travels and relationships through your eyes. Blogs are beautiful things! :)

I’ve learned to let go and trust that the universe has my back. Whenever I tried to control things too rigidly the world said “No!” and had bigger plans for me. I’ve learned to slow down, to love myself, to follow my dreams, that I can achieve my dreams, and that only good things are to come. :) Great summer I would say!

My summer…not quite as exciting and adventurous as yours, but I learnt not to take my recovery for granted :-)

So strange that the summer is almost over…

Have a wonderful ‘end’ of summer! xxx Julia (Taste of Living)

I would love to try the mexican flavored ones crushed up as a breading on mock fried (baked) okra.

This summer I learned that weeds grow a whole lot faster than grass in my new backyard.

I loved this post so much! Although I will admit I disagree with #1. Summer passed slow to me this year. Probably bec I’m anxious for fall when the weather is cooler and I can actually take baby M out to play. LOL Very true that nothing compares to the bond of family.

This summer I learned that having friends and family in your life is one of the greatest things out there. Without them, I don’t know what I would do.

I’d love to try the Terra a la Mexicana variety! I’d eat them alone, and probably make a meal of it because so many of my meals are just snacks to the extreme.

Many many years later, my husband still swears that the meatloaf at Perkins is the best he has ever eaten! Nothing wrong with a chain restaurant that actually knows how to make good food!

I learned this summer that forcing yourself to do things you are scared of can really change your life. I left a thankless office job after 6 years and am now pursuing my yoga teacher certification-quite a turnaround in one summer, but it has definitely taught me to listen to your heart and just go for it!

Sara K August 19, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I love McDonalds ice cream- it’s so cheap yet so delicious- especially the soft serve chocolate fudge sundaes. In India, they have entire McDonalds locations that only sell different variations of ice cream/sundaes.
Hmmm, what I learned this summer:
That just because you CAN do something, it doesn’t mean you should…or have to. Vague, but true.

Izzyy August 19, 2010 at 1:14 pm

I’m going to get shot by any Canadians reading this but…I can’t stand Tim Hortons coffee!!! I know how they make/roast it, so I can (but won’t – don’t worry!) go into detail on how its not really great quality or fresh at all. I guess I’m a Starby’s girl all the way! Though I will admit, any Timmy’s pastry case makes me drooool.

Oooh I’d love to try the blue Terra chips…because, well, they’re BLUE! Whaaaat?! ;D

This summer, I learned:
1) There is NO excuse to ignore your health – time restraints or otherwise can’t justify it!
2) I love the heat and I don’t know why I live in Canada sometimes
3) I never want to work two full time jobs again in my life!
