Now, where were we?
Oh yes. New York City. Having a fabulous time. Eating great food. New Yorkers are so darn lucky. And I am so darn lucky, because I got to meet 5 more lovely New Yorkers all in one single day.
On Tuesday afternoon, I met up with two bloggers whom I’ve always been wanting to meet ever since I discovered their blogs. I doubt they need any introductions, but let me share with you my personal impressions of them.
This is Gena from Choosing Raw:
I once did a guest post for her. I even created a vegan fusion dish, just for her. Do you know how hard that was for this cheese-whoring, bacon-loving Korean girl? Well, Gena has that effect of you—her warmth and sincerity transcends even the cold walls of emotionless emails, and you just want to go out of your way to do anything for her.
Now, take your eyes off that brilliant smile of Gena’s, and look into the background. Do you see a lovely lady standing there balancing a tray in her hands, with a mop of dark curls? That’s Diana from Soap and Chocolate:
Diana once made a “You Are What You Cook” dish for me based on the definition of her name. Her name Diana means “Divine”, and her parents must have been enlightened when they chose that name for her, because she suits it perfectly. There is something so free-spirited yet elegant about Diana. She’s like a goddess—I mean, just look at that gorgeous smile!
When Gena found out I’ll be coming up to NYC, she contacted me about meeting up, and of course we had to invite Diana too. They are both incredibly lucky—they work within a stone’s throw from each other! Well, I left the choice of venue to Gena, and she chose one of her favorite lunch place, Bonobo’s:
Bonobo’s is named after the ape who is of closest relation to the human species, with about 99% identical DNA. They’re also one of the healthiest mammals, with a predominantly raw diet is based mostly on wild plants: fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. As you have guessed, this restaurant is a raw vegan place with a cuisine that is similar to a bonobo’s diet. Um, I swear this place is more appetizing than it sounds. Take a look:
Bonobo’s was actually kind of hard to find. It was tucked into a small corner of a building, hidden by on-going construction. Just like the food, their decorations were simple and minimalistic, yet not lacking warmth. They have a huge salad bar, in which you can choose your own ingredients to make your own salad, platters, or nori rolls. ![]()
They are apparently famous for their coconut “crack”, or their Coconut Chai Water, so I got one for another special blogger:
And I heard that their desserts are pretty good, too:
This is the owner:
He gave me a strange look when I started taking pictures, but Gena assured him that I was “cool”, and he even gave a little smile for the picture. See? I told you Gena had that effect on people.
No matter how fresh the ingredients are, I wasn’t about to get a salad in this “exotic” raw vegan restaurant, so I opted for the nori roll:
Sesame-Tahini pate, sprouts, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and red onions rolled in raw nori. Side of mesclun greens and homemade Sweet Basil dressing.
Raw food can be pretty darn pretty, I’ll give them that! I actually really liked my nori roll—it wasn’t exactly my style of hot grub and gooey cheese, but it was an exploration of the clean, whole, natural flavors that most people have forgotten to appreciate.
I loved the Sweet Basil dressing. I could stick a straw into it and drink it. It was so fragrant, and such a lovely color. I wish it had a lid so I could take the leftover home.
Diana also got the nori roll, but with different ingredients:
Hers was a Mediterranean nut pate, with sprouts, red cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and red bell pepper. She also got the Sweet Basil dressing (actually, she was the one who recommended it to me—thanks Diana!).
Gena got a salad and soup combo. Here’s her salad:
Greens, carrots, cucumbers. And her soup:
Spinach avocado soup, blended with Coconut soup. I think she was happy with her soup, don’t you?
Bloggers in action!
Love it. After the necessary procedures of photo-taking and modeling, we tucked into our nutritious, healthful meals, while indulging in some…not as nutritious gossip. Come on, who else are we gonna blog-gossip with?
I’ve always admired and adored Diana and Gena, but actually seeing them face to face, being able to watch their expressions, observe their mannerisms, and listen to their chatter made me fall in love with them even more. They’re both vivacious and rambunctious, people who fill you with the same enthusiasm for whatever they’re passionate about.
I felt like I could talk to them for hours, but they both had to return to work, and we all parted ways, marching off into the busy Manhattan crowd to our respective destinations. It’s a weird, beautiful thing about blogging, isn’t it? We’re all so different, with different lifestyles, backgrounds, and even eating habits—yet for the couple of hours we sat together, we connected in a way only bloggers can.
Thank you for the wonderful time, ladies! It was a glorious afternoon with both of you.
Man, I’ll never be able to finish this NYC recap in time, but I have to end here and continue next time. Gotta meet up with another friend of mine, this time an old buddy. Catch up with you all soon!
Question of the Day: Ever tried raw, vegan cuisine before? And what do you love most about blogger meet-ups?

My favorite raw vegan meal so far has been a remake of the classic brownie with vanilla bean ice cream and fudge sauce. Holy rawesomeness
Home, sweet home…
A) No, because the only way I could do that is if I made it myself, and I find that more of a hassle than cooking. :p
B) …I really wouldn’t know! :p
<3 <3
oh, how fun! And totally jealous of that meal
SO sad I couldn’t make it to BlogHer – I wanted to hang out again! sometime soon – it needs to happen.
enjoy the rest of today!
Wow you look like you are having a bunch of fun! YUM. Enjoy your stay and I am soo jealous of you getting to meet blogger friends. I have never met one of them
Ah two more bloggers for me to become obsessed with. I’m going to have to check out that raw restaurant! I can’t say that I’ve ever had a whole meal of completely raw food before. But I am a tahini addict…
Ah, Sophia, I’m so sad I missed you! I am just caching up on your posts and had no idea you were here. It’s too bad you were gone already because we actually had a big blogger meetup this morning to see Caitlin on the Today show. I have done a couple meetups and have really enjoyed them — you connect with some people more than others, of course. I have made such good friends!
Oh, and Shake Shack is the best. Period. You should have tried the frozen custard or a concrete; they are to die for good.
I have never had specifically raw food, but I do incorporate raw and vegan food into my diet sometimes! I like simple things like carrots with raw almond butter or raw salads topped with avocado or EVOO.
Anyways, hope you’re having a fun August! Sounds like it.
Great meet up! And now I want that sushi so bad!
Beautiful pics, I think they must be with your new camera?
xxx Julia (Taste of Living)
(did you know bonobos have sex almost the entire time? really…crazy monkeys)
lol, I heard that about bonobos, too! Funny…you’d never think a raw vegan as sex-crazed though!
ohhh this place looks so delish! I think me and Joanne need to make a trip over there!
Ohhhhh that coconut water looks oh so familiar! ::wink::
This is making me want to go to NYC more and more!
I also want to try raw food. I haven’t ever seen a place close to me that offers up raw meals but I’d be more than willing to seek one out.
Gena and Diana were lucky to meet you.
And your new camera is amazing.
Your new camera ups the sexy factor of everything.
It’s so cool you dined with Gena and Diana! Lovely eats too! I think you know my thoughts on raw food
… after Pure Food & Wine’s Classic Sundae, no other ice cream treat can compare! Yes, even my beloved B&Js!
We “gossiped” a bit about you, actually. Gena thinks you’re sweet!
I have never tried a raw food restaurant before, but I really want to! Next time I am in NY (which should be in April) I will be going to that place!!
I have never done a blogger meet-up
There’s nothing like a meal of bonobo food with good friends to make the most perfect day
I’m glad you had a great time with Gena and Diana! I’ve never had a blogger meet-up, but I can understand that instant connection that makes time spent together so wonderful.
I guess the only time I’ve ever had raw, vegan food is when I make salads. That’s about as creative as I’ve gotten so far
I’m glad you had a great time with Diana and Gena! I’ve never been to a blogger meet up, mostly because I live out in the sticks, but also because I’m so dang shy.
I would definitely give raw, vegan food a try. It looks delicious!
I’ve never eaten raw, vegan food, but I would love to give it a try! I’m sure it’s tasty!! My favorite part of blogger meet-ups is the instant bond/connection I feel with such beautiful – inside and out – women!! It is awesome!!
You’re so lucky to be in NY now! I wish I was there too! That vegan restaurant looks so awesome. I was vegan for maybe 5 months so I’ve definitely had my share of raw vegan cuisine, lol. I’ve never had a blogger meet up before so I can’t answer that question..I think my mom would kill me if I met up with “strange internet people” anyway haha. Keep having an great time in NY!!
<3 Emily
I am SO jealous of you! I love how the blog world transcends (right word?) into real life!!
Blogger meet-ups are great! I’ve got one next week and I can’t wait
Meeting people in real life who I initially met online is still a thrilling novelty for me…
Sarah x
Ahhh, so jealous that you are in NYC! So fun that you got to have a blogger meetup, too. Bonobos looks like a delish lunch spot. I think blogger meetups are great bc you get to actually meet the people behind the words you read every day. I don’t think I’ve ever found it awkward because I have so much in common with food bloggers.
I had a raw, vegan pizza one time. It was yummy but to be honest, not very filling! Best part of blogger meet-ups are new, lovely friends of course!
I’ve been experimenting a bit with raw food and really like it. I eat a fair amount of raw food. I would probably eat more raw dishes if I had more time to plan and be creative…
I really like meeting bloggers in person and actually became good friends with a few bloggers in “real life.” I think it’s fun to see if bloggers are like you expected them to be based on their blogs…
Hey Sophia,
I’m so jealous of all your blogger meet-ups. Until the day I finally meet you, I guess I’ll have to enjoy reading your witty, honest, fun blog for now. If I had the chance, I’d love to meet every one of my readers/commentors. It’s very different reading a blog and actually meeting the author. You definitely feel more connected after you’ve actually met them.
Saw your tweet about Canada or Maine? My obvious vote is for Canada. Only cause there’s a very slight chance you may be close enough for me to meet you. If by any chance you do visit Edmonton, I’d love to do a meet-up. But I’m sure you’re most likely visiting the bigger cities like Vancouver or Toronto eh? Wherever you do decide to go, have lotsa fun before school starts up again! CANADA!
Bonobo’s certainly has beautiful fare–and I’m sure it tasted just as good as it looks!
I’ve never visited a vegan/raw restaurant before, but I’ve prepared raw meals for myself from my own kitchen.
I was a raw food vegan for quite a while and slowly transitioned cooked foods back into my diet for calories (running really takes a lot and I couldn’t eat all day long!) and then when I got pregnant I added more things like eggs to my diet but fully plan on going high raw vegan once I plump out this baby!
What a great experience! I think the only place I’ve heard of raw restaurants is in NYC. Even though I am not vegan or a rawist, I would love to visit a place like this and enjoy the food.
So how was the chai??? I was dying for you to try it right there, but I’m glad if you got to spread the coconut crack love.
You are really too kind to me–I’m blushing! I’m so glad we got to hang out, and thank you for visiting NYC–what an opportunity for me and Gena! I can tell you are an amazing force to be reckoned with. You will do great things.
Now come baaaaaack…
I didn’t try the coconut “crack”, Diana! I gave it to another blogger I met that night, whose birthday had just passed. I’m starting to think I should have just fished out another fiver just to get a taste!
Not being kind at all…just being truthful about my impression of you! Have a great day, dear Diana!
It looks like you had an amazing meet-up! Both of those ladies are absolutely radiant.
Since I follow a vegan diet I definitely have eaten vegan cuisine and it is divine. No meat, dairy or eggs are necessary for moi! As for raw, I’ve definitely done raw stints but I still haven’t tried any actual raw cuisine. Soon though!
loved everything about this post! But most of all loved the Blogger in Action photo!
I do that pose every single day…it made me smile!
That looks like an awesome place and it looks like you had some awesome company. I have not yet had a blogger meet up. But, I have had raw, vegan food before. I am a vegetarian, so there is always something I like.
what beautiful girls! how fun, i’ve never had a raw food experience, but it looks like a lot of fun. i’ve also never had a blogger meetup, but i’d love to, if you’re ever in philly, let me know!
Two of my favorite ladies enjoying some of my favorite food!! I’ll admit, I texted some rather racy comments about the coconut chai the first time I tried it. Coconut chai = LOVE!
Wow…, I’m so keen to learn more about this type of cookery, Ive tasted some great foods in the ‘raw’ category even though I am a bit of a carnivore with a huge bent with French & Italian cooking
oh what fun always nice to meet other bloggers in real life lol
What a great break, and I was grinning when I saw you were going to Bonobos – its a matriarchal society – which probably explains so much =)
Does a veg-fruit smoothie count as raw? ;p
I loved this post! Thanks for introducing me to these lovely ladies. I’m pretty sure “raw” and “vegan” are only put together as a curse word here in Kansas where we’re big on meat and potatoes. The lack of vegan options are pitiful and I found it very discouraging when I was vegan two years ago. I HAVE eaten raw and vegan but not on purpose, just some vegetable spring rolls I threw together and ate them with a NOT raw vegan soba noodles with peanut sauce dish. Besides that, the only raw vegan stuff I eat is salad with homemade Italian dressing. I think that would be a very challenging way to eat, especially if you don’t have local restaurants that support that way of eating.I’m all for cooking at home but I love to go out once a week and it depressed me when it was so hard to find something to eat just being vegan–I can imagine how much worse it would be trying to find raw food! I’d have to go to the salad bar instead of a sit-down restaurant. LOL!
The best restaurant I’ve ever been to in NYC is Franchia on Park. It’s a vegan place that is delicious.
Haha what a cute name for a place. Did you know that bonobos have sex like all the time? Random huh? And probably nothing to do with the food there
I’ve tried a lot of egan and vegetarian food. Some of it is pretty good!
You’re so lucky to get to meet those two lovely ladies! I’ve never tried raw, vegan restaurants before, but I bet I can find some in Los Angeles area. Good choice, I’d have gotten the sushi roll too.
I have never tried any food specifically identified as vegan. I’ve eaten a lot of salads with raw ingredients only. Does that count?
Every month in Los Angeles the FBLA (Food Bloggers LA) meet at one of the group’s houses for a potluck and discussion. It is so amazing to talk to so many people about our passion, without them thinking we are boring or crazy. And we learn from each other…a lot. Some of these bloggers really know important information. Our next meeting is on August 22.
I’ve never been to a blogger meet up, I live so far away from other bloggers. BOO BOO!
I have never tried raw or vegan food which has specifially been labeled as such, but I really want to go to a vegan / raw restaurant.. preferably in NYC!
I have only had one blogger meet up, but I hope to have many more to come! I need to get my butt to NYC, as it seems that’s where most foodies live. I would love to meet Diana, she just seems so unique, smart, creative, and FUN! OF course, I’d LOVE to meet you too!!! Very much. I have a feeling I would laugh a lot
I’m glad you all had a great time and had lots of delicious food. I’m not into the whole idea of eating raw, but this food looks amazing. I don’t blame you for not getting a salad. Too boring!!! Looks like you made a great choice.
I’ve never tried raw cuisine before! It looks really good though, I would love to try it – we just don’t have anywhere around here to eat any
Which, again, is why NYC is infinitely times better than where I live lol
Sophia,
I didn’t think words could do justice to our awesome lunch, but of course, YOUR eloquent and thoughtful words can. I had the best time meeting you, and fear not: it’s the first of many
Gena
Hooray for NYC! We’re visiting there at the end of August and I’m SO excited! Cannot wait. I’ve never tried raw vegan cuisine in a restaurant and am definitely changing that when we get to New York! And blogger meet-ups… never had one
you’re all in the US! (mostly).
Btw, I’m loving your new hairstyle with the fringe- looks great!
xxx
Did you like the coconut drink!? It is like crack, isn’t it? I went to Bonobo’s with Katie from Lilveggiepatch and I loved it. I love how you and the other bloggers came from such different food backgrounds yet had blogging in common to break nori rolls over. Looking forward to hearing about the rest of your trip!
That’s so wonderful to meet up with fellow bloggers. I’m sure all of you had much fun. The nori rolls look fantastic. they are my favourite too. Thanks very much for sharing.
Now that’s my kind of restuarant! I’ve never tried raw cuisine but have eaten at several veggie/vegan restaurants in the past, which weren’t great. I think I’m just a very fussy vegan
But everything at Bonobos looks divine to me, particularly Gena’s soup. I think if I lived in NYC being a raw foodist would be a synch
Blogger meet-ups are always fun…there’s always such a sense of mutual connection there to start with that some of the awkward moments in initial meetings are eliminated because most of us choose to share quite personal information on blogs, which it would take a much longer time to ‘reveal’ in other social relationships starting from scratch. It makes the whole process of being social so much easier for me, not having to explain myself or feel judged.
Glad you had an amazing time
<3

xxxxxxx
ahh so fun!!! I have only been to 1 blogger meet up but the best part was by FAR the fact taht we all had a passion and love for good food, we spoke abotu what it tastes like and what we liked most abotu it.
