God has the most amazing, perfect timing. Just when I was starting to feel stifled in my home in Northern Virginia…just when I was starting to feel a bit lonely…just when I was starting to feel insignificant and unconfident…just when I was getting a bit annoyed by my lack of privacy…God sends me to New York City.
Ah. The Big Apple. I don’t think I can live here permanently…but NYC is just the perfect getaway to loosen up, to get that spark back into your life, to bolster up your freedom to laugh.
There is something about New York City. Your pace quickens. You talk a bit faster, you move a bit smoother. You feel more sophisticated and worldly—even if you look so out of place with a Korean haircut and a big-ass camera dangling around your neck.
Can you tell? I’m having the most fabulous time here. It’s my last night here, and I refuse to go to sleep. I’m in Manhattan, baby!
Actually, right now I’m in Brooklyn. I’m crashing at my friend Alda’s place, who is an art student in NYC. Here’s the thing: I’ve never met her before. But we click—like soul mates.
Alda was actually a blog reader of mine. About 17 months ago, she sent me an email. I responded back. And she replied back. And I replied back. And then she replied back and then I—well, you get the idea. We emailed each other daily. And when she moved from Hong Kong to NYC, we started texting each other daily, too.
I don’t know what to say about Alda, except that we just…click. We’re so different, but somehow we just had so many things to talk about, and even though we’ve never met, she became one of my closest friends. It’s freaky, I know…but I believe friendships are matched by God, and this one is definitely it. It helps that Alda is incredibly fun, caring, smart, and lovable, too.
I thought the moment we finally met would be more thrilling. But when I first saw her face-to-face, we just immediately started chatting like old friends. I didn’t feel like I was meeting someone new. I felt like I was meeting a sister.
We have had so much fun together. So so so much fun. But. Let’s take things slow. I’m going to break this NYC trip into at least 3 parts. This is the first night we had together.
We went to the Times Square and Columbus Circle area. But we didn’t actually shop. Alda was more interested in showing me all the cool foodie places. God, she knows me so well. We went to take a look at Bouchon Bakery:
It was closing when we arrived, but I had enough time to poke my camera lens in between the closing doors to take a few pictures.
Look at that GIGANTIC macaron! You can’t really tell from here, but they were the size of your palm!
I saw a little girl munching on it happily, and it took all my will to resist snatching it from her hands. It would have been so easy…like taking candy from a baby. But I guess that would have been mean. Sigh.
I didn’t get anything because the place was closed and…well, it was pretty high-class. Aka expensive.
By then it was 10:30pm, so I was starting to feel pangs of hunger. By impromptu, Alda told me that there was a new burger store opened nearby…
New Yorkers, you know what I’m talking about. Shake Shack is a blooming burger stand that originated from Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. It is the In-N-Out of Manhattan. I first read about this from The Girl Who Ate Everything, and have been itching to try their famous burgers for a long time. Their menu isn’t just limited to burgers:
There’s frozen custard, with rather interesting flavors:
And even a little something for the poochies:
Hm…okay…Anyway. Shake Shack is big here. BIG. It used to be just a small roadside shack…but it’s boomed into a chain, opening stores all over Manhattan, with one in Miami, Florida, and Saratoga Springs, NY as well.
It was a really late Monday night, but it was still packed.
Full of hungry New Yorkers, waiting patiently for their grub.
The service was pretty friendly, too. Despite the long line of customers, the employees weren’t flustered at all, even taking the time to patiently explain the menu to us.
Shake Shack is a lot like In-N-Out in that they put their kitchen into full view, so that customers can see their food being prepared in hygienic and fresh conditions.
What you do is you order, and then they call you out to pick up your order. Very fast food…but the prices ain’t.
I got the Shackburger, which is the original burger here:
100% Natural Black Angus burger, cooked medium rare. American cheese, lettuce, tomato and the famous ShackSauce. Served in potato bun.
It was awesome. It was smaller than I thought it would be considering that it was almost $5, but it was really, really good. The meat was tender and juicy, the potato bun buttery and soft and soaked with beef juices, and the sauce creamy and tangy and slightly sweet. Look at how happy I am!
Alda got the Second City Bird Dog:
Chicken sage sausage, with cucumber, tomato and pickle. Seasoned with sport pepper and celery salt.
It was supposed to come with relish and onions too, but Alda, asked them to leave that off because she’s crazy and does not like raw onions or relish. Since Alda is a graphic designer, we both marveled at the cool design of the hot dog holder:
One of the things I love about Alda is that she makes me view things differently. She’s very observant and has a sharp artist eye, and she helps me to slow down and appreciate the small details, too.
After that we took a brief walk around East Village. We stopped by to look at the new Burger King Whopper Bar:
Interesting…Anyone ever tried this? I’m not sure if it’s worth it? This was worth it though:
It’s a fry station called Pommes Frites, and they sell fresh-cut, fresh-fried thick potato fries, topped with all sorts of funky mayonnaise you want. I had a sample, with the Roasted Garlic mayo and the Sweet Mango Chutney mayo.
Delicious. Hot and crispy in my mouth. I liked the Sweet Mango Chutney mayonnaise better though.
Okay. My mouth is watering again. It’s time for my snack. I’ll come back with Part II. Stay tuned!
Question of the Day: If you eat meat, what is your favorite burger place? And ever had an experience in which you just click with a certain someone?

Can’t believe how busy everything is on a late weekday night – it must New York!
New York is ace – I went there at the beginning of last year, but was in the grips of ED at the time, so my ultimate aim is to go back there to enjoy all the food I missed out on. I’ve seen another blogger post about that Shake Shack place and I definitely have to go
So glad you got to meet Alda – I’ve met so many amazing people through blogging, and then gone on to meet them in real life too. I often find I ‘click’ better with these people than many of the friends I’ve made without internet assistance…
Sarah x
1. I have never been to NY. I need to go. Seriously I could cry I am so jealous!
2. Shake Shack sounds incredible. The frozen custard flavors alone call to me.
3. Bouchon Bakery is so good. I’ve been to the one in Vegas several times. Totally pricey but worth it. In my opinion anyway.
4. I love when I just click with people. It’s fantastic!
Ahhh, NY, my favorite city of them all!! Does Alda go to Pratt? That area is really awesome. How exciting that you finally got to meet her! When you “meet” through blogging you know each other better than you ever could any stranger on the street and that’s what makes the connection so special. I’ve definitely just clicked with people before. It’s nice when friends “get you” and you can share and learn from each other.
Nope! Alda goes to Parsons. I have another friend who just graduated from Pratt, though.
NYC is amazing, isn’t it? It’s one of my favorite cities too! Well, after San Francisco. ;-p
I miss NYC!!!!I’m glad you’re having a great time!!!!!!!!
this post makes me feel like I tour NY already. thanks for the pictures! you look gorgeous in them. I’ll be stepping my foot into new york on september 1st for half a day and catching a cruise for 4 days. won’t be having much time there. hopefully will get to do some shopping eh?
jen
WOW…what a great time Sophia! I love it! There’s just something so unique and sparkling about NYC!
Are you going to that healthy living summit as well?
xxx Julia (Taste of Living)
Great photos of the endless action in NYC! I can’t wait to make a trip out there soon.
mm… every time I get something new to see in your blog. This time NYC, I haven’t gone there but heard a lot about it. You have taken some good photo shots. I would like to visit such a place where people would feel energetic. In India there is only one place that makes you feel like something you felt… and that’s Mumbai
I don’t know if you noticed this, but in that first picture of Alda where she’s walking down the street, those two guys had their heads turned towards her! Hahaha it SO reminded me of commercials or movies–you know, wind blowing her hair, turning heads everywhere.
Man, I really want to visit NYC someday.
Oh I LOVE New York! How cool that you have made such a strong connection with Alda! I love when you feel as though you’ve known someone forever when you haven’t actually met them. There are so many people in my life like this right now.
Enjoy your trip. I can’t wait to hear more about the city!
you are a traveling fool these days. Love it! Love NYC too, just full of adventure and craziness. haha!
My best friend from high school, Sarah, we clicked RIGHT when we met each other, and then we never separated. In fact, it’s the same story with Nick (who actually remind me a lot of Sarah, in a weird way). We clicked RIGHT away, and have not separated since.
So I’m glad you are enjoying NYC. I have only been there once and I wanted to try ALL The food the 2 days we were there. HA! Clearly that didn’t happen. Next time I go I need to try the Shake Shack, clearly! Yum.
Favorite burger? THURMANS!!!!
Mmmm Shake Shack and Pommes Frites! Dang girl. You know how to do it big!
Holy cow and she’s GORGEOUS too! So glad you were able to get away and reconnect with yourself.
Oooh Salted Caramel custard! I dont think I’ve had a legit. beef burger at a restaurant. I always went for things like chicken nuggets or mac n cheese!!! I used to hate hamburgers because whenever my family made them at cook outs, they were so dried out and I would opt for the more flavorful hot dogs. The last person I really really “clicked” with was my BFF of elementary school…we weren’t afraid to be the girls who loved and were awesome at the Pokemon gameboy game. Oh, and the added bonus was that the all the boys wanted to be friends with us because we could hae parties where we played Pokemon together! Guess we won out in the end!
you travel so much! i feel like you almost don’t even have a real home. i’m so jeal, really, foreal.
have you seen the giveaway that i’m hosting? it’d be really cool if you entered :]

There is a place called B Spot that is really yummy. It is one of Michael Simon’s restaurants who won one of those big food shows.. I always have to get no bun though because of being gluten intolerant.. but they are super yummy!
Looks like you had a fantastic treat with a great new friend!!
I would LOVE to go to NYC!
I love the story how you became friends. I have clicked too, for example with the friend who’s coming over from Australia tomorrow and a dear dear friend from Germany. I treasure the memories we have together and I love it that no matter how much time we spend apart or don’t keep in touch, the minute we meet or reconnect it’s like we just each other yesterday
I’ll be back there in 2 weeks
So happy.. I love NYC, it’s feels like home too me.
Dana xo
i agree. nyc is definitely more of a place to visit than to live. i feel like living there would take away the excitement i feel every time i go through the lincoln tunnel!
love that head shot of alda! and it’s amazing that I’ve clicked so well with the people i’ve met in blog land
have a good rest of the trip!
Don’t you just love meeting other bloggers from around the nation and world. I get to meet so many tomorrow in NYC I’m giddy.
Looks like you enjoyed some of the best NYC had to offer.
You went to shake shack and didn’t get a shake!? That’s ok, if I remember correctly, they’re really expensive, but they look so good!
Love the pictures with your new camera!
OK your friend Alda looks and sounds like everything that I half-wish I was. In short, she is incredible and amazing, and I think it’s so awesome that you got a chance to meet this person! Your small teeny burger on a potato bun (what’s a potato bun?) looks really cute. Just like you! Ha! It’s good to see you enjoying your NYC trip.
Lots of love
Aletheia
A potato bun is a bun made with potatoes. Not 100% potato, but enough potato to give it a nice golden color, and a fluffiness…oooh. Wish you could try it! Martin’s is a brand of potato buns that they sell in generic stores, which is actually really good.
My favorite burger place is my own back yard. Nothing tastes fresher than a burger hot off the grill
Ah yes, I’ve heard of the new Shake Shack location! But you know what? I’ve lived here 3 years and have not yet tried Shake Shack, not even the location that’s actually right across from Bonobos, where we ate yesterday! I’m so ashamed–I’ve always wanted to try it though, and your up-close pictures make me want to do it sooner rather than later!
GASP!!!! Oh Diana!!! I’m shocked! Flabbergasted!!! I demand you get your lovely ass down there one day! Um, just for one day, let’s indulge in cow corpses, shall we? Just for one day~
I’m thinking I need to find a friend that lives in New York! Haha!
It pays to blog doesn’t it?
I think connections like that are so awesome! Having never really hit it off with a “pen-pal” like that, I’m quite envious of you!
<3 Tori
Are you in NYC to go to BlogHer?
Are you gonna go to Time Square and cheer Caitlin on? I’m jealous!! But not as much I normally would be because I’ll be in Vegas!!
Ooh Las Vegas! Haha, that is a definite competition to NYC, all right! I’m not going to BlogHer…and I’m not sure what you mean about Times Square and Caitlin, but I’m leaving tonight. SO sad. T___T
Too bad you’re not going to make it to BlogHer, but it looks like you had a lot of fun. I was referring to the fact that Caitlin at http://www.healthytippingpoint.com is going to be on the Today Show at 8:30 tomorrow morning promoting her book and a bunch of people are going to go watch in Times Square and hold up posters.
i’ve only passed through NY so i’m wayyy jealous of you! but i totally know what you mean about having something work out (like your trip) just when you need it too. i’m heading on a vacay this week and it’s just perfect timing!
I am pretty envious of your NYC trip. It has been too long since I’ve visited one of my favorite cities ever. I blame that on Maya.
I used to love Johnny Rocket’s burgers…I believe they are 100X better than In-n-Out. But they are more $$ too!
Ahh, I wish I’d known you were in NYC! I JUST returned last night! BUT, I am in DC until at least next Tuesday…Want to try meeting up?
The Shake Shack looks fantastic! I actually passed it while I was there, but didn’t realize it was worth stopping for! Bummer. Next time, I guess.
Hey Sara!
You’re in luck! There might actually be a DC blogger meet-up this Saturday afternoon…I’ll email you again if it’s confirmed! But meanwhile, please keep Saturday lunchtime free!
oh man, would love to NYC one day!
That burger looks amazing! I haven’t had a delicious burger in such a long time. I love NYC. I haven’t been in quite a few years.
When I studied abroad, one of the girls I met, we just clicked. We still talk and see eachother to this day!
I just ate at The Burger Joint in DC and LOVED it! I really want to try Good Stuff and Ray’s Hellburger too
.
i can’t believe im just going to miss you in NYC. but this post makes me REALLY EXCITED for it. That whopper bar sounds freaking fantastic!
ps i died lolling at this “even if you look so out of place with a Korean haircut and a big-ass camera dangling around your neck.”
i love your wit!
i have a blog friend like that who i’ve never actually met…crazy how God puts the coolest people in your life, no?
and burgers…sigh, i love them…i actually really like Chili’s. lame, i know, but i love them still!
NYC! MY brother has lived there for 15 years and I never tire of it. I love how you described it. NYC is just the perfect getaway to loosen up, to get that spark back into your life, to bolster up your freedom to laugh.
So true.
Theres a burger place right next to my work that makes amazing burgers.
Ahhh I’m SOOO happy that you came! And that we saw each other! And that I got to meet Alda who is AWESOME!
HOW FUN! i live so close to NYC, but have still never gone, for shame! that burger looks and sounds amazing, worth the trip alone!
You are totally making me miss NY!!!!!!
I have had a couple experiences like that where I just clicked with someone – it is very cool!!
My fave burger place is in a small town outside of my city, the restaurant is called the Ice House.
The way you described meeting up with Alda was just how I experienced meeting up with my good bloggie friend Emily a little over a week ago. It was like we clicked instantly – like sisters!! How awesome to experience that kind of unique bond right away!!
So happy that you are enjoying my wonderful city. There is no other place in the world like it.
Beautiful burgers! It’s been far too long since I last had potato bread.
Sophia, I’ve been following you on your blog and let me just say that you’re such an inspiration. I feel like I can relate to you so well, not just because we’re both Koreans (although I think it definitely plays a part!) but because we’re on the same page in terms of the way we think. I remember reading your post “The Tale of Two Dumplings” and I felt like I could cry reading your story.. Just this summer I visited Korea for a month and I’m ashamed to say that I could not enjoy the experience AT ALL .. I was/am a recovering anorexic but during that time I never really committed to gaining. Whenever my family was enjoying jjajangmyun (짜장면) or 떡복끼, there I was, extremely anxious about the nutritional content of each meal and nibbling a pathetic portion of the meals. I stressed out over every meal and I made it a frustrating experience for my whole family. I was such a disappointment to my grandparents, as you probably know well that it is part of the Korean custom to clean off your plate at every meal, a task I most definitely did not manage to accomplish ever. Now I’m sitting here back in Canada, more committed than ever to gain, and I wish I could just go back in time and enjoy those meals! I’m so happy you’re on a stable path of recovering! Hopefully I’ll soon follow on the same path! 화이팅!
Thank you, Angela! It means a lot to me that you will write this and share with me. I wish you all the best in your journey and battle. The next time you return, you’ll not only be looking much healthier, but enjoying every bite and time with your family again!
When I lived in Ireland, we used to order fries with a garlic mayo smothered in cheese. Heart attack city, but so delicious!
I loveeeee New York!! And I love all the places you went – awesome pics with the new camera (especially the burgers ones) Now I need to start planning my next trip there!
See babe?
U totally have a lot of friends! isnt it great u clicked so well w her? Myself meet a lot of ppl in my job, but it’s alws tht someone tht “understands” tht is elusive
BURGERS!! potato buns! Arrghhh!!
Fun!
I don’t eat meat, but I really like this place called Flip in Atlanta. It’s Richard Blais (from Top Chef) restaurant and they have all kinds of different burgers.
i have never been to NYC but think i would love it. it is on the top of list of places that i must go see.
