New York City: We Clicked

August 3, 2010

in blog meet-up,eating out,God,My story,travel

God has the most amazing, perfect timing. Just when I was starting to feel stifled in my home in Northern Virginia…just when I was starting to feel a bit lonely…just when I was starting to feel insignificant and unconfident…just when I was getting a bit annoyed by my lack of privacy…God sends me to New York City.
DSC_0124 Ah. The Big Apple. I don’t think I can live here permanently…but NYC is just the perfect getaway to loosen up, to get that spark back into your life, to bolster up your freedom to laugh.
DSC_0125 There is something about New York City. Your pace quickens. You talk a bit faster, you move a bit smoother. You feel more sophisticated and worldly—even if you look so out of place with a Korean haircut and a big-ass camera dangling around your neck.

Can you tell? I’m having the most fabulous time here. It’s my last night here, and I refuse to go to sleep. I’m in Manhattan, baby!

Actually, right now I’m in Brooklyn. I’m crashing at my friend Alda’s place, who is an art student in NYC. Here’s the thing: I’ve never met her before. But we click—like soul mates.
DSC_0193 Alda was actually a blog reader of mine. About 17 months ago, she sent me an email. I responded back. And she replied back. And I replied back. And then she replied back and then I—well, you get the idea. We emailed each other daily. And when she moved from Hong Kong to NYC, we started texting each other daily, too.

I don’t know what to say about Alda, except that we just…click. We’re so different, but somehow we just had so many things to talk about, and even though we’ve never met, she became one of my closest friends. It’s freaky, I know…but I believe friendships are matched by God, and this one is definitely it. It helps that Alda is incredibly fun, caring, smart, and lovable, too.
DSC_0249 I thought the moment we finally met would be more thrilling. But when I first saw her face-to-face, we just immediately started chatting like old friends. I didn’t feel like I was meeting someone new. I felt like I was meeting a sister.

We have had so much fun together. So so so much fun. But. Let’s take things slow. I’m going to break this NYC trip into at least 3 parts. This is the first night we had together.

We went to the Times Square and Columbus Circle area. But we didn’t actually shop. Alda was more interested in showing me all the cool foodie places. God, she knows me so well. We went to take a look at Bouchon Bakery:

DSC_0092It was closing when we arrived, but I had enough time to poke my camera lens in between the closing doors to take a few pictures.
DSC_0093 Look at that GIGANTIC macaron! You can’t really tell from here, but they were the size of your palm!
DSC_0095 I saw a little girl munching on it happily, and it took all my will to resist snatching it from her hands. It would have been so easy…like taking candy from a baby. But I guess that would have been mean. Sigh.
DSC_0096 I didn’t get anything because the place was closed and…well, it was pretty high-class. Aka expensive.

By then it was 10:30pm, so I was starting to feel pangs of hunger. By impromptu, Alda told me that there was a new burger store opened nearby…
DSC_0097 New Yorkers, you know what I’m talking about. Shake Shack is a blooming burger stand that originated from Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. It is the In-N-Out of Manhattan. I first read about this from The Girl Who Ate Everything, and have been itching to try their famous burgers for a long time. Their menu isn’t just limited to burgers:
DSC_0100 There’s frozen custard, with rather interesting flavors:
DSC_0101 And even a little something for the poochies:
DSC_0108 Hm…okay…Anyway. Shake Shack is big here. BIG. It used to be just a small roadside shack…but it’s boomed into a chain, opening stores all over Manhattan, with one in Miami, Florida, and Saratoga Springs, NY as well.
DSC_0103 It was a really late Monday night, but it was still packed.
DSC_0104 Full of hungry New Yorkers, waiting patiently for their grub.
DSC_0106 The service was pretty friendly, too. Despite the long line of customers, the employees weren’t flustered at all, even taking the time to patiently explain the menu to us.
DSC_0109Shake Shack is a lot like In-N-Out in that they put their kitchen into full view, so that customers can see their food being prepared in hygienic and fresh conditions.
DSC_0110 What you do is you order, and then they call you out to pick up your order. Very fast food…but the prices ain’t.
DSC_0107 I got the Shackburger, which is the original burger here:
DSC_0117 100% Natural Black Angus burger, cooked medium rare. American cheese, lettuce, tomato and the famous ShackSauce. Served in potato bun.
DSC_0116 It was awesome. It was smaller than I thought it would be considering that it was almost $5, but it was really, really good. The meat was tender and juicy, the potato bun buttery and soft and soaked with beef juices, and the sauce creamy and tangy and slightly sweet. Look at how happy I am!
DSC_0123 Alda got the Second City Bird Dog:
DSC_0118 Chicken sage sausage, with cucumber, tomato and pickle. Seasoned with sport pepper and celery salt.
DSC_0122 It was supposed to come with relish and onions too, but Alda, asked them to leave that off because she’s crazy and does not like raw onions or relish. Since Alda is a graphic designer, we both marveled at the cool design of the hot dog holder:
DSC_0121 One of the things I love about Alda is that she makes me view things differently. She’s very observant and has a sharp artist eye, and she  helps me to slow down and appreciate the small details, too.

After that we took a brief walk around East Village. We stopped by to look at the new Burger King Whopper Bar:
DSC_0127 Interesting…Anyone ever tried this? I’m not sure if it’s worth it? This was worth it though:
DSC_0131 It’s a fry station called Pommes Frites, and they sell fresh-cut, fresh-fried thick potato fries, topped with all sorts of funky mayonnaise you want. I had a sample, with the Roasted Garlic mayo and the Sweet Mango Chutney mayo.
DSC_0128 Delicious. Hot and crispy in my mouth. I liked the Sweet Mango Chutney mayonnaise better though.

Okay. My mouth is watering again. It’s time for my snack. I’ll come back with Part II. Stay tuned! :-)

Question of the Day: If you eat meat, what is your favorite burger place? And ever had an experience in which you just click with a certain someone?

I love NYC to pieces. I wouldn’t want to live there–tooooooo cold, but to visit it’s awesome. Can’t wait for Part II!

Ah, I love NYC, especially Central Park…though I probably don’t remember much cuz the last time I was there I was 9 years old :S

And ((drool)) those fries beside the mayo looks so tempting!

There aren’t many good burger joints in my area unless one likes Mcdonalds greasy burgers. So to get a really good burger I need to go to an actual restaurant and overpay for one :(

Love the New York Pics! And it’s so great when you meet a friend that you’ve only e-mailed/talked to on the phone in person. That’s so great!

Have a safe trip back home!

Amazing! Amazingzingzing! That’s all there is to say about this post. I love nyc’s energy and this post just captures it. Plus Alda sounds incredible. Those friendships with people you click with for no apparent reason….well, they’re just the best aren’t they?

So so cool that you finally got to meet your friend! Isn’t it cool how the web can connect people in ways we never would before? your burger & those fries are making me drool. here in Wichita, KS, one of my favorite burger places is a local joint called West Street Burgers which is only like 5 minutes from our house. They use local meat and it’s a tiny little place with only like 6 tables but it’s very good. We have another local joint that started in Wichita but has now sprouted wings and is in neighboring cities called Spangles and they have really excellent burgers but they don’t feel quite so “home made” as West Street Burgers. As far as chains go, I have to say I love me a Whopper from Burger King. Heck, I love me a quarter pounder from McDonalds too! Guess I’m not too picky when it comes to burgers.

Glad you are enjoying NYC! I think I saw Pommes Frites on the Food Network (?) back in the day when we had cable t.v. I loved all the sauces you could choose. I put it on my list of places I wanted to visit if I ever visited NYC…

Sophia…so glad to see that you have all this great energy…and it’s put to such good use…to eat at great foodie outlets ;o)
Meeting up with someone new is always exciting. You looked so happy…bring that back home with you and stop thinking so much LOL

I haven’t been back to NYC in 20 years at least…there’s so many places I go to and still want to see…however, New York is certainly on my list for a time in Autumn…at the worst, next year. Very fond and fun memories of my time there.

Ciao for now,
Claudia

I’ve definitely clicked with people that I’ve never met! There’s currently 2 bloggers that I email daily and I can honestly say that I feel closer to them then I do to a lot of the people I’ve actually physically met. That’s why I love blogging, it allows you to meet people from all over that share the same (or similar) interests as you. It’s awesome.

I love the names of the custards that the Shake Shack has! Chocolate Chuckles? Yes please. Not too sure if I would want to try the basil one though.

I love frozen custard; my grandmother’s town had a literal shack on the outskirts, and it was the go-to spot in summer!
I haven’t worked myself up to ordering meat out yet, but my partner was a die-hard fan of In n Out back in California.

I’ve never been to NYC. When the kiddies get older, or if we find someone who will take two crazy kids off our hands for a couple weeks, NYC and LA are on top of my list of places I must visit. I’m so sick of traveling to Asian places.

I’ve yet to find my fave burger place. We don’t have many great ones in Edmonton :( . But when I think burgers, I think Red Robbin’s or Fat Burger.

Great city, great eats! What more could a girl ask for, right? ;) Good friends too, but that’s where Alda comes in! :)

It’s great that you got to visit NYC because I get to read about my hometown from your point of view. Shake Shack is so good. So much better than In and Out in my opinion! Yeah, NY is expensive. Enjoy!
