You Say Dog Food, I Say Woof!

July 16, 2010

in eating out,My story,recipes

I wish I had a t-shirt that said, “Real Foodies Eat McNuggets (Too)”.

Maybe I’m opening a can of worms, and several of you are recoiling in horror, interjecting with protests about the questionable meat in the “chicken” of McNuggets, the hormones in the “chicken”, the weird unreadable chemicals, the malpractice of the company, the importance of sustainability, blah…blah…blah.

Frankly, I think it’s rather insulting for someone to sniff their noses and say, “That stuff is for the dogs” when so many people happily chow down that “dog food” all across the world. While I do admit fast food isn’t exactly nutritionally or environmentally friendly, I see no harm in acknowledging that hey, sometimes, we just need some grub.

That’s why one of the blogs I subscribe to is GrubGrade, a blog about all things…well, grubby—the kind of food that you grab on-the-go, the kind of sustenance in which we all guiltily, yet delightfully, indulge. That includes fast food, snacks, chain restaurants, and other casual gruberies. It’s got reviews, behind-the-scene interviews, updates, and news, and I find it a rather refreshing change from most other blogs that proudly tout organic butter and homemade artisan bread.

I’ve actually been in constant contact with one of the regular bloggers there, Adam. You might recognize him as the sole participator of Sweet Treat Wednesday and Fried Food Thursday. It turns out that he lives on about 30 miles away from me, so when Ameena contacted me about a small DC Bloggers meet-up, I invited him right away.

Yes, I know. It would have made such a strong statement if we had met at Burger King, or even a low-key chili place in DC. But Ameena has severe allergy issues, and the other blogger, Danielle, is a vegetarian/vegan. That of course, eliminates practically all grubby places.

We still found a pretty popular chain restaurant that would fit all our diets, though. I’m sure most of you have heard of it. It’s Le Pain Quotidien:
IMG_5520I got a bit lost navigating my way to this place in DC, and felt like a fool asking for directions, because I know I totally butchered the French pronunciation and sounded like an idiot. If I were ever to wander around the streets of Paris, I’ll be chased after with rock-hard week-old baguettes and smelly unshaved armpits.
IMG_5527Haha, I kid. Anyway. I was so happy to meet Ameena again. I’ve met her a couple times in LA, and we had plans to meet up again, but who knew we would be meeting all the way across the country instead? This time, she brought her darling little 5-year-old daughter Maya along. I wish I had taken a picture of Maya, but just visit Ameena’s blog to take a peek at her adorable face.

Maya is this hyper little bird that flies about here and there; she never sits still, and I could tell by the way she talks that she is incredibly intelligent and bright. Ameena, you’ve got a young woman full of potential in your hands. But watch it— this pretty girl has got the best features of both her parents, and will grow up to break tons of hearts. ;-)

I was also pleased to meet Danielle, whose blog I have not visited before until now. She’s the co-blogger of the blog Beltway to Bay, and I thought it was really cool how she kept in contact with her friend at San Francisco through sharing a common blog about healthy living.

And of course, it was awesome finally meeting the dude behind the GrubGrade team, Adam. Adam doesn’t just write about food. He also is a pretty esteemed sports writer at Utah State. No, he is not Mormon (He’s Catholic, actually), and I think he’s crazy to want to move to frigid Utah, but damn is he a great writer!!

In fact, a recent piece he wrote on a Navy football player Andre Byrd really touched me to tears…but it seemed to hit the writer Adam himself the most, and he even did an honest, personal account on how that interview with Byrd inspired him. Please do check both articles out. I promise you it’s worth every minute of your time…enough to get the attention of a ESPN writer, Bruce Feldman, who also wrote a piece on both Adam and Byrd.
IMG_5530 Anyway. I don’t share the same love for sports as Adam, but we both share the same passion for faith, and obviously, food. And apparently we have the same tastes (and budget), because we both ordered the same thing, the Ricotta Tartine:
IMG_5521 Organic whole wheat bread with mission figs, black pepper and organic acacia honey.
IMG_5522This tiny open-faced sandwich cost me about $9, minus tip and taxes. That is equal to four Supersize McDonald french fries! I mean come on, this is a snack, not a meal. I was also expecting fresh figs, so was rather nonplussed to find dried figs instead. I almost teared up at the sight of this blatant daylight robbery.

But thankfully, I also almost teared up when I bit into this skinny sandwich. Holy…freaking…OMG! So freaking good!
IMG_5524 It was the ricotta that was the star of this dish—it was utterly creamy, luscious, rich…the great thing about ricotta is that even though it can be considered bland, it marries so well with other ingredients. The touch of acacia honey brought out the natural sweetness of the cheese, and the sprinkle of fresh-cracked pepper gave it some ummph, some depth.

Maya couldn’t finish her Roast Beef Tartine, so I stole a piece from her:
IMG_5525 Roast Beef with caper mayonnaise, diced tomatoes & scallions. It was good, and I think I need to recreate that caper mayonnaise. That was a crappy picture, so here’s a more professional one:
brunch-at-le-pain_12 <Source>

The waiter messed up Danielle’s order though, so she got her meal for free (woo hoo!) and he also gave us a complimentary dessert:

IMG_5529 I think it’s a hazelnut chocolate mousse cake. I dislike chocolatey desserts, but I had several bites because hey, it’s free and it’s organic and all that good jazz. And it wasn’t too bad. Intensely chocolatey, and not too sweet. Not my kind of dessert, but I’m sure many chocolate-lovers would swoon over it.

The lunch was definitely expensive. But hey, meeting and hanging out with great people like Ameena, Danielle, and Adam is priceless.

But the tartine was constantly on my mind, even when I got home. It was just too fabulous, but I refuse to pay $12 for that small a portion. So I decided to make my own at home, but with a few twists, of course:
IMG_5543 I used my favorite bread, Honey Whole Wheat from Great Harvest. On one side, I slathered a mixture of cottage cheese and mayo, and topped it with sliced figs and black pepper.
IMG_5544 On the other, I slathered a creamy blue cheese spread (from Laughing Cow), thin slices of fresh Fuji apple, and 3 slices of crisp bacon:
IMG_5545 All together now:
IMG_5550Ooooh. Not to be snotty, but I think my sandwich kicks tartine ass. It probably took less than $2 to make it, but it tasted…dare I say it…much better? I mean, wow, is anything more mouth-watering than fried bacon? I think not.
IMG_5548 Now that’s what I like about grub food. Affordable, delicious, easy, simple, and fast. Sometimes, that can be a fresh-made sandwich like this. And sometimes, it can be a packet of potato chips, or McNuggets from the Dollar Menu.

You say dog food, I say “Woof! Woof!” (“It’s still tasty, silly” in Dog language).

Question of the Day: What is your favorite kind of grub food?

wow, your sandwich looks so much better! I have to admit I’m kinda a snotty foodie that doesn’t frequent fast food much, but I’m not going to look down on someone for eating there. Hey, I love me some chicken nuggets or a wendy’s frosty on occasion, oh yes and a nice big burger! I agree, that portion was way too dinky for $9, whaaa?

lequan@luvtoeat July 16, 2010 at 11:35 am

WOOF WOOF WOOF! No such thing as grub food for me. Everything in moderation. Ok I lie, sometimes I eat a lot more of one thing more than others and it’s needless to say what. Although I do have my recovery days so it’s all good, right?

I’m always jealous of blogger meet ups. Boy, there’s definitely some kind of fate between you and Ameena. Blogging is such a beautiful thing :-) .

You ask such a hard question Sophia. How can I narrow all that yumminess down to one favorite? I guess the first thing that comes to mind is anything with ooey gooey melted cheese piled on top or as a dip on the side. And of course, bring on the deep frieds :-P . Have a wonderful weekend!

Wow. I’d definitely pick your sandwich over the one in the restaurant!!

I love a double cheeseburger from Burger King every once in a while or a chicken mcnugget or two! Sometimes you gotta give in to a little bit of grub! :)

lequan@luvtoeat July 16, 2010 at 11:38 am

PS

your sandwiches look amazingly delicious. I’m not a bacon fan (I’ll eat it only when it’s extra crispy) but I’d probably gobble that up in record time.

Because of food allergies and such I can’t eat at McD’s or places like that but Hunni and I practically live at Panera. I love there black bean soup and mediterranean veggie sandwich. Yes I can make it at home cheaper probably but that would require work and wouldn’t be considered a date in my house :-)

I get the notion of what you’re trying to talk about. I think it’s about not being snobby and looking down on people who don’t eat like you. I may have strong views about what I eat but never feel like I need to pressure others to do the same. I also love, love love that restaurant. The food there is so yummy.

You are so polite Sophia…Maya definitely doesn’t sit still for one second! She drives me completely crazy sometimes so I appreciate that kid-less people can tolerate her energy. :)

It was great seeing you again and I agree that Le Pain’s portions leave much to be desired. But their flavors are spot on, and your sandwich looks just as delicious!

Grub food…can’t say that I can eat most of it! I am wracking my brain and will let you know if I come up with anything.

Lots of choices here! Aside from a nice snack sized bag of Route 11 or Utz potato chips, I’d have to go with now infamouse Cluck Double from Burger King. At 2 bucks you can’t beat the salty, fatty cheapness of it all. Oh yea, and the multiple packets of HFCS loaded ketchup that bring a great balance of sweetness to the sandwich.

But really Sophia, we gotta hit up a burger joint the next time. That Tartine was good, but for nine bucks I need good and hearty!

Grub food! Who can live without it? x) My favorite “grub food” is probably Brixx pizza or anything from Panera, haha. And does candy count? Cause I’m in love with any type of gummy candy, specifically Swedish fish >< who says everything has to be gourmet and healthy? haha. Yummy looking sandwich, too!

Your sandwich looks FAR better than that stuffy, overpriced one!

I live for thick cut potato fries, with an extra crispy exterior, and slightly soggy from all the grease. Yum. :D

I don’t really have a “grub food” to share, but that’s kind of my point, I guess. Just like you might not share Adam’s love of sports (as I do), you still hit it off. I might not share your love of fast food, but I love your blog because you do. It’s you, no shame in your game and even if I never want to eat a bacon apple fig something-or-other, I want to read you write about it.;)

What a fun meet-up!

Urm, I don’t know if I really eat grub food but that’s just because it doesn’t appeal to me. Unless sushi kind of counts? Because I definitely devour sushi.

That’s awesome that you got to do another blogger meet up! The food looks so fancy there..

Hey Sophia,

I’m sure Adam is a great guy even if he isn’t Mormon. Don’t forget though that us Mormons are a pretty cool group of people too. :-) (I’m sure you didn’t mean anything by that but I had to say something.)

Oh no, Alison! I didn’t mean anything by that! I just meant that just because Adam chose Utah doesn’t mean he’s Mormon. I actually had some pretty great high school friends who are devout Mormons…and they were one of the sweetest, nicest people I’ve met! And uh..they all went to college in Utah. lol.

I don’t really eat fast food much (I just don’t really eat out much) because it’s always cheaper for me to make things myself…plus I enjoy it. I do love that ricotta tartine though…totally remaking it as well. It looks too good to pass up!

Rock on, Cathos unite! (sorry, I had to)

Eh…fast food honestly doesn’t appeal that much to me anymore. It just sits too heavy and makes me have a food baby. I do like Wendy’s hamburgers though, and some of the soul food places and BBQ places around Houston. And I salivate over some of the places Guy Fieri visits on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

But DANG that sammich looks kickass.

I’m not a fast-food fan so I would have to say my grub of choice is pizza and cheese quesadillas. There are two specific places that come to mind that are to die!

I can’t say that I agree on your points about fast food, but I do see what you’re saying. Above all a foodie should care about good food, and what good food constitutes does depend on one’s definition, ethics, and dietary restrictions. You’re one of the most diverse foodies I know!

What a great meet up! It sounds like a really interesting group of people, especially Adam who doesn’t sound like he fits the mold of bloggers I know.

I used to be mental for McD’s chicken nuggets in my early twenties. I ordered them almost every day and always bemoaned that they were always gone too quickly, no matter how many I ordered. I seriously considered writing to headquarters and asking if they’d consider selling their nuggets and KFC-sized buckets. LOL! That phase has passed and I’d be fine never having them again. I have a thing for burgers now. Any kind. Whoppers, quarter pounders with cheese, a burger with tons of lettuce, tomato, onion & pickle–anything. I’m obsessed and it’s so weird b/c I seem to have an aversion to most meats but love burgers. Anyway, that’s great you got to meet up with some fellow bloggers (see, that’s why I don’t think you’re really anti-social! I don’t know if I could force myself to meet a fellow blogger, even if they lived next door! ha!). Your sandwich creation looks FABULOUS! Love your cooking style, girl. It’s probably b/c I don’t get around to many diverse blogs but your creations are the most unique of any food blog I frequent. And I mean that in a good way. :)

Le Pain Quotidien is one of my favorite chain restaurants–in fact I used to frequent the one you visited quite frequently when I lived in DC (is that Dupont Circle?). The ricotta tartin sounds fantastic, but I agree with everyone else that your version looks even better.

My favorite grub food is french fries. Simple, but so satisfying!

As for grub food, I am a total sucker for pizza. I really only eat 2-3 slices when I first get it, but I can individually wrap/chill the slices and then have several days of delicious lunches.

Super cheap, all things considered.

I have to say…I’m not sure I can eat another Chicken McNugget after my XC coach told me how they were made, and this was long before I knew anything about nutrition. I used to be addicted to them though! McDonald’s still has the best fries ever if you ask me. OK, but favorite grub food…I haven’t had grub in so long (probs 7 months)…probably a chocolate donut from Dunkin Donuts. I love chocolate donuts!!!
