The Beginning to The End of Good Things

July 6, 2010

in eating out,My story,travel

Wow. I feel like I’m back in Singapore again. The heat here in Northern Virginia is unbearable. I just read that the temperature is over a 100 degrees and I’m just about to melt! I foresee many, many McDonald’s soft cones in the future.

As you can see, I’m back in the States and while I’m still sad that my summer trip to Asia is over, I’m looking forward to a productive month (and a half) here in my parents’ house. Who says you’ve got to be overseas traveling in order to experience new adventures? Not I. I tend to reap the most out of my summer, no matter where I am and what I’m doing.

One thing I’m really reluctant to let go, however, is the business class treatment I’ve received for most of my flights. As I’ve mentioned before, me getting business class was entirely by God’s grace, because my parents certainly don’t have the kind of money for that.

Well, one downside of being pampered is that you’ll never be satisfied with the mediocre again. I’ll probably never have the chance to indulge in it again, but dang was that worth it while it lasted!

IMG_5441First of all, the lounges:
IMG_3663 Free food, free beverages, free snacks, free meals, free wi-fi, free entertainment. Each time, I made a point to check-in into the airport at least 4 hours before departure time, just to chill at the lounge. Hey, why pay $10 for a crappy cold sandwich when I can get unlimited servings of free food at the lounge?

Second, the seats:
IMG_5421No more cramping in between smelly, cranky, or fat passengers, holding your pee in for hours, or getting cramps in your legs and neck. Nope, you get to stretch out your legs, and even pull your seat back into a horizontal inclination.

Not that you’re gonna sleep much, because you get non-stop entertainment from the personal screen before you. All the recent blockbuster movies, TV shows, documentaries, video games, music, etc, right at your fingertips. Enough to make you forget about the lack of Internet for 16 hours.

Finally, the food:
IMG_5420Of course. There is nothing more exciting than the sight of an air stewardess pushing food trolleys towards you when you’re up in the air. And I have to say, I think I got my best on-flight meal on this particular flight. Apparently Asian Airlines won Airline of the Year 2010, and I’m not surprised because their food is freaking awesome, and not just for an airplane meal.
IMG_5424 Just check out this lavish dinner they served me! First course, or Canape if you’re feeling snotty:
IMG_5422 Baked Shrimp Cocktail with Pimiento Salsa. If I liked shrimp I would love this more, but I did love the salsa. It was yummy!

Second course, an appetizer:
IMG_5427Seafood Terrine of Salmon, Shrimp, Asparagus and Red Bell Pepper, side of Tomato Salsa and Hoisin (?) Sauce. It was the first time I got to try terrine. I’ve always thought it was so…gourmet, the kind of food only available in high-class restaurants. Look ma, I’m eating terrine! :D

On the side, we had a mini salad:
IMG_5429 No wilted iceberg and puny tomatoes in sight. I really dug the baby corn and sprouts.

We also had a selection of warm bread from a basket, and I chose a cheese focaccia roll:
IMG_5428 And for the main course, I chose Beef Tenderloin Steak with Herb Crust, served with Broccoil, Carrot, and Fried Potatoes with Onions:
IMG_5430 Now, I usually vehemently discourage anyone from ordering beef in a plane, but this one was surprisingly good. The stewardess poured some rich, flavorful gravy over it, and together with the crunchy herby crust, the steak was actually really delicious.
IMG_5433 And cooked perfectly, too! Look at that, medium-rare, just the way I like it!
IMG_5437This lovely multi-course meal was topped off with a sweet refreshing dessert:
IMG_5438 Haagen Daz strawberry ice-cream! Nothing like licking on ice-cream while watching a comedy, don’t you agree? By the way, Date Night is hilarious—highly recommend. Our Family Wedding…not so much. And I didn’t really enjoy Avatar, either. Does anyone else find the whole concept of “dreaming” into an alien body and mating with one incredibly creepy and disturbing?

Before I knew it, it was time for breakfast. Despite the fact that it was only about 2am for me, I was already ready to chow down. Watching movies and sleeping with your legs stretched out is hard work. We started out with strawberry yogurt and fresh fruit:
IMG_5440 And then I was provided with a selection of breakfast pastries, to which I chose a cranberry muffin:
IMG_5442 And for the main course, I had Crepes stuffed with Creamy Chicken, Potato & Mushrooms, served with Green Bean, Bacon, & Toasted Bread Crumbs:
IMG_5443 One bite and I was convinced that I needed to try making crepes again. Why are crepes so freaking good? They’re just anorexic pancakes. But they definitely taste super indulgent and luscious!
IMG_5445Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and this one ended when I landed at LAX. From then on, I had to wait 3 hours (lounge-less) to take an economy class domestic flight back to DC. I spent the 3 hours licking on 3 McDonald’s ice-cream cones (the cheapest “lunch” I could find at the airport) and browsing trashy magazines. That was easy enough; it was the actual flight back home that really sucked. You see, after you’ve been spoiled with business class, economy class is just…unbearable. Especially if you’ve got a wailing baby sitting right behind you for 6 whole hours. Kill. Me. Now.

I got so frazzled that I left my passport on the plane when I got out. I only realized it at the baggage claim and had to rush back in a frenzy, because it was well past midnight and there were barely anyone hanging around in the airport.

But I’m right now safe and sound back home, laughing at myself. So all good things may come to an end, but new ones never stop to form. And I just know this summer will continue to be great!

Question of the Day: So we’re half-way through summer. What was the highlight of your summer? And what is your biggest plan for the remainder of it?

I totally want to fly Asian Airlines now. I am hoping the car dealership I work for will find a reason to send me to China right away.

Haha, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks McDonalds puts crack in their soft serve. That stuffs addicting!

When I flew overseas we had several different airline’s food, and they were all pretty dissapointing. Now a trip to Asia’s on my wish list, partly just to get some of that food!!

I’m with you on this heat! Its unbearable in DC!!!

All of your eats are amazing! I’ve only flown business class once and that because I was on standby.

I can’t believe how fast the summer going by! I’m looking forward to a nice relaxing vacation by the beach at the end of the summer :)

I’ve never heard crepes being referred to as “anorexic pancakes”. That’s funny (should I be admitting that??)

I have never flown in business class, but after your posts I think it might be something that I need to add to my “life must-do list”. It sounds like it’s worth it at least once!

I still can’t get over the great choice of HAaagen Dazs ice cream. I miss my ice cream tonight actually :(

For me summer is just starting!! I consider the two months that I am off of work “summer” … so summer consists of July and August to me (even though June has nice weather, the first day of summer isn’t technically until June 21st) – so I like to think we still have a long ways to go ;-)

I would love to eat like that on a flight – wow!!! You are lucky girl!! Everything looks and sounds fabulous!!

EEP don’t TELL me we’re halfway through summer already! I feel like mine has barely just started.

I’ve never ridden business class but I don’t think they’re anywhere near that nice on US airlines. That food looks awesome! Definitely restaurant quality.

I’m glad you got home safe and sound. Is there a trip to NY in your future now that we’re both on the same coast?? HINT HINT

Dear Joanne! I’m DEFINITELy planning a trip up to NYC someday…maybe first week of Aug! And I demand to see you for a fine meal! (actually, one of my only reasons I’ll be going up there)! x-D

yes business class is DA BOMB but unfortunately it doesn’t come easily and flying economy afterwards makes me want to cry. but it’s wonderful you got to experience it!

I need to try business class at least once in my life…well I know when I “make it” I’m gonna fly business class all the time!! High hopes :)

I can’t believe your steak was medium rare. I can’t get ppl at restaurants to serve medium rare and you get it up in the air. Dope.

I’ve seriously got to fly business next time. hahaha…

The weather here in LA has been pretty nice. Not as hot as it would usually be. Cold summmer nights, too. So I can’t complain. It’s a bit odd for SoCal weather in July

Yea, it’s definitely wonderful to always have an adventure no matter where you are. Are your parents in Cali or a diff. state?
I suppose one of the things I hate about feeling temporarily happy or content is that I know it’ll come to an end- as all good things do. I’m such a pessimist! :( haha

Oh no! Don’t think like that, girl! Some happiness are temporary, but those that actually TRULY matter are eternal! :-) And hey, even those temporary happiness always comes and goes all the time, so you’re never left with no happiness at all. It’s all about perspective! ;-)

And my parents are in VA! I was only ever in CA for school!

Ah brings a whole new meaning to plane food. Hope you managed to get something more substantial after your ice cream lunch! The highlight of my summer has definitely been to remove all food restrictions and in the last week alone I’ve eaten so many lovely things, rediscovering my love of food and life in the process.

That airline food looks almost good enough to coax me onto a plane for the very first time…and being that I have the worst fear of flying ever that’s saying something!

The highlight of summer for me has been the weather so far! The UK has never had so much sunshine and I’m loving every minute of it…spending as much time as I can outside because I’m worried it won’t last.

I hope you continue to have a wonderful remainder of the summer in the US :)

I have only been bumped up on a flight once, and it was on my way to a business conference. The guy in the seat next to me was TOTALLY taking advantage of the wine and champagne that was offered and none of the food, meaning he was rather drunk about a half hour in. He would not shut up and they finally kind of gently cut him off.

Moral of the story is, the next day it turns out he was the keynote speaker at the conference. Needless to say, he was surprised to see me sitting there and gave me as many direct quotes and helpful story ideas as I wanted ;)

So, combine that with the extra room for my long legs, and I was all about first class! As for summer, it’s been “meh” so maybe I can make something happen for the second half.

Sophia – welcome back! I am so with you on how much economy sucks. Please forgive the obnoxiousness of what I am about to write but I haven’t been in economy for ages (San Fran trips aside) and I am dreading my trip to DC next week because we are flying in economy! I didn’t want to waste miles for 3 of us for a shorter flight so economy it is.

Let me know if you are going to be anywhere near DC next Tues or Wed. Would love to meet up! Otherwise I’ll see you in LA soon. :)

Good food on an airplane is a rarity and you’ve had some good stuff. The best food I’ve ever had was on British Airways on my way to and from Spain. So good!

My summer has been busy and I did go on a mini vacation. But now I’m busy again until another mini vacation in August.

I’ve never flown business class but it sounds luxurious! One day I’ll fly business.. or own my own private jet. ;)

So far I haven’t really had a highlight of my summer BUT I know that something super amazing will happen. The highlight kind of happens at the end of summer though, because that’s when I get to take a trip to wherever my little heart desires.

I can read your blog again!! This makes me happy. My crappy student-hovel bandwidth wouldn’t load your blog (thinks it’s because you have your own domain? It was a temperamental connection…phfft) but I’ve been attempting to catch up on your trip-posts. I’ve missed your humour ;)
I’m always a bit baffled by this ‘pancake’ thing: being one of ‘em weird british folk our pancakes are, I guess, what you call crepes: ie. thin and you roll ‘em up. I do believe I’ve never tried an ‘American’ pancake. I remember watching ‘Uncle Buck’ as a child, and being amazed at that massive stack of pancakes John Candy made…so strange and alien!
Another thing is the waffle thing: over here waffles are generally these reconstituted potato things you ate for dinner as a child alongside spaghetti hoops or worms (and yes, there IS a taste difference between hoops and worms, despite them being essentially identical)…so I could never figure out why they were a big breakfast thing in America…eaten with syrup and what not. I have since been enlightened though, and the world makes sense again :)
p.s. That’s plane food??? Really?? Impressed! The only plane food I’ve ever encountered didn’t even resemble anything edible. It looked more like the boiled wrappers that might once have contained food…

Shannon July 7, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Hey Sophia, glad you had a great trip back. I’m too cheap to spend money on business class but you dang, they should totally hire you to advertise for them. You got me sold girl! I didn’t know I was missing all that goodness. But these days, I’m lucky if I even get to go on a road trip let alone flying. I don’t want to be the parent with that one screaming baby on the plane. Hope you have a great time in DC!
