Hey guys! The last few days have been like a whirlwind, but right now, I’m back in Incheon, staying at the same hotel by myself. I leave in less than 2 days, back to the U.S.of A, and for the last couple of days, I finally have some quiet time to myself to do some light meditation.
Reflecting back to this summer trip, I am filled with overabounding joy and gratefulness. This trip has been such a blessing. It has blessed me, and made me aware of God’s intimate guiding each step of the way. I knew this trip would be great, but I did not fathom how much of a success it will be. I had several prayer requests in mind before I set out on this trip, and God has answered every single one of them. My God is freaking amazing.
I thank God for a meaningful trip with Jing Wen to Hong Kong, in which we strengthened our friendship despite some conflicts, and in turn blessed and encourage one another in myriad of ways.
I thank God for all the awesome time I’ve had with my old friends, and being able to laugh, cry, share testimonies, and praise the Lord together.
I thank God for letting me meet some really admirable and adorable new friends, and for letting me realize that wonderful friends can be found anywhere.
I thank God for an eye-opening church retreat to Malacca, in which I was connected in one heart and spirit with incredibly blessed and inspiring individuals from all over the world.
I thank God for reuniting me with my family in Korea, for letting me see my grandparents and give them some comfort for the last time. I also thank God for the kindness of my relatives, who fed and took care of me when my parents returned home. Their active love really touched me so, so much.
And I thank God for resolving a serious 8-year-long conflict between me and a certain person whom I have loved very, very much. I’ll share more about this on my next post, because I don’t want this post to get too long. But right now, I am just bursting with happiness that this problem which had tortured me for so long finally seems to have reached a peaceful conclusion.
I am also bursting to share with you many of the good eats I’ve had…some which go all the way back to Singapore (dang, I’m so behind)…but this post, in contradiction to all the positive things I’ve said above, will be about bad eats.
One thing I have to admit is that I did not enjoy the food here in Korea as much as the ones in Singapore. I don’t share the same enthusiasm towards Korean food as I do to Singaporean food. Not to say that Korean food is bad—I adore their bakeries and snacks, plus their sweet potatoes and watermelon are fan-freaking-stastic— but I just don’t really like most traditional Korean food, and I have not had as much freedom choosing what I want to eat here as I did in Singapore. For every meal out, I have left the decision to my relatives.
This particular meal out was chosen by my two cousins, Yoonji and Clara. Yoonji is from my mom’s side and Clara is from my dad’s side, but they both know each other because they visited me at the same time about 2 years ago. We decided to have lunch together, all four of us: me, Yoonji, Clara, and her friend Morgan.
Clara wanted donkatsu, so we went to a place called Yong Rest & Pub, or “Dragon”. At least, that’s what the Chinese symbol they use says:
I have no idea what this place is trying to be. Its concept is all over the place. It’s dark with posh decorations and purple velvet armchairs like an upscale coffee shop, but its food is rather cheap and mediocre. Its menu is Asian, but it serves a multi-course meal in western-style progression. I am thoroughly confused.
You first start out by choosing a main dish, and it is automatically included into a multi-course meal. We were started out first with guava juice:
And then tea sandwiches:
With the crusts removed, and filled with a thin spread of egg salad. Or something. It was okay.
Next, soup:
Not sure what kind of soup it is. It’s creamy. It’s rich. And it tastes like it came from a dry mix.
After that, salad:
Or is it salad? More like a pinch of iceberg lettuce with a huge dollop of cloying dressing. I think it was ranch. Or something.
The next dish was even more ridiculous:
Not that I have anything against kimchi and Korean pickled radish, but huh? It was so freaking random in conjunction with the previous courses.
Finally, our main course arrived. I had the tuna kimchi fried rice:
It came with a fried egg on top, but I was disconcerted to find the yolk extremely well-cooked.
Also, there were barely enough tuna flakes in there. I thought the server made a mistake at first, but then I came across about 5 tiny flakes of tuna. The fried rice wasn’t bad, though. I liked that they included black rice together with white rice such as this:
Yoonji ordered the seafood fried rice:
Not bad. I’d say she had the best dish of us all. I helped her out with her dish quite a bit.
Clara ordered the donkatsu, or fried pork cutlet:
This was just mediocre. The breading was nice and crunchy, but the pork was low-quality. It was rather dry and too thin.
However, Morgan’s dish was probably the worst:
He got the Mixed Set Meal, which came with a jumble of random things: spaghetti and tomato sauce, deep-fried fish, deep-fried pork cutlet, hamburger steak, kimchi fried rice, macaroni salad, and tater tots.
I felt bad for him because his was the most expensive dish, yet he barely at more than two forkfuls. He was mostly freaked out about why the sauce on top of his fish was baby pink:
It turned out to be tartar sauce, but he refused to eat a pink one. Clara and I split it between us instead.
He also didn’t like his hamburger steak, which also came with too many colors, so I helped him eat it:
Neither did he like the little ball of kimchi fried rice:
The only thing he liked was the macaroni salad and the tater tots:
“Can I just order a huge side dish of tater tots?” He asked mournfully. Unfortunately, apparently the tater tots could not be ordered separately; they were made solely as a “bonus addition” to the Mixed Set Meal, and that only. Heavens know why.
Dessert came:
We had a choice of coffee, tea, or ice-cream. The ice-cream came in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla flavors, except we weren’t given a choice. We were just handed our ice-creams, each with different flavors or syrup. We took our time eating it because it was crappy, so the ice-cream kind of melted away into slush. Here’s Clara licking away:
There was also the most random “refreshment” basket:
Korean “cheese” sausages, cookies, and a banana. What the heck is up with the banana? I made Yoonji take it and the sausages home as her study snack. And Morgan ate the cookies, since he barely had any lunch.
So the food was lackluster. And so are the pictures (damn the dark fancy lighting!). But our time together certainly was not. My cousins Yoonji and Clara are anything but mediocre. They are so precious and lovable to me, and heck, Morgan is a pretty entertaining guy as well (though he keeps telling me I look like I’m 13, wtf!). We spent the whole time laughing and talking, with Clara and I doing the translations between Morgan and Yoonji’s conversation.
This was the last day I got to see Yoonji. Yoonji was in the middle of her exams, but she still doled out 3 hours of her precious time for me, right in between her exam and study sessions. I felt really touched by that! Of course, she was also super curious about the 6’2 feet tall Jewish guy with waist-length hair, and she even asked for a picture together:
Can you see the difference in height? Ha ha ha! And Yoonji looks so happy!
It’s been a bittersweet week, to say so many goodbyes to all these people I love. I’m feeling rather melancholy, but at the same time…really, really happy and peaceful. I feel like I’ve learned and gained a lot from this trip, and I’m eager to continue on another journey when I return to America.

For me a successful trip is that I’ve seen good friends and had great food. The rest is just details. I love trips to see friends.
You knwo I just realised that I have only touched hte tip of the icerberg as far as Korean food goes! There is SO much great looking food that I have never tried. not for lack of wanting to, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it here!

I never thought I’d miss Korean food as much as I have lately. While living there, I got SO sick of it but now, I’m having massive cravings. Thankfully, a Korean friend is in town so we’re heading out tonight for some good eats.

I am always in AWE of how God answers prayers! Like this trip for you. What a purposeful time it was and very healing I am sure. A successful trip to me is good company and food paired with quality time, rest, and maybe a little adventure!
Your trip sounds like it has been so amazing – so many interesting places, family and friends, and not to mention food. The randomness of the food at that restaurant made me laugh – and I am usually all for random combos!

Successful travel for me?
a tripe where I am happy and peaceful. (usually these trips are more spiritually related for me) The vacations that I go on to sight see and travel are never as relaxing. When I go on trips for spirtual reasons, they are always so refreshing, insightful, and wonderful!!

I love the high differences…so funny to imagine a 6’2″ Jewish guy in Korea.
If I can go on a trip and not want to come home, I consider that a total success. Wish me luck next week in DC…a trip with Maya should be interesting. Lets see if I consider it a success.

I am so sorry about that terrible meal. I hate going out to a restaurant and being excited to try good foods and then being disappointed. However, I realize it is not a bad thing to be able to say “Whatever, it’s just food. There will be plenty of other dinners.” It kinda helps me rid myself of the attachment. Plus, I guess I spend less time eating and more time talking.
I love that radish kimchi (I’m assuming that’s what the dish on the left is…or my friend deceived me), though!
A successful trip in my opinion involves a lot of laughing with friends, plus some gossip, some good movies, and, obviously, great food!

I guess a trip is successful to me if it accomplishes the goals that I have set out for myself. But I have also realized that sometimes, my goals may not be the same as God’s. And no matter what, He always accomplishes His purposes in His own timing. I just have to learn to be patient and to reflect on what He is really telling me. Have a safe trip back to US, Sophia! I’m so glad that your trip has been a success, even if the meals weren’t always… I consider a successful trip one in which I am able to enjoy myself in the moment, instead of anxiously worrying about every little thing. In a couple of days, I am going on a short trip to Gatlinburg and I’m excited, because it’s a trip with my brother and I don’t get to spend much time with him.
I’m so glad you had a fantastic trip Sophia. It sounds like you got a lot accomplished and really took advantage of all the time you had with family and friends. I loved learning about all of the difference foods and I’m still in awe of many of them. Above I can’t get over how GOOD tuna kimchi fried rice sounds!!! And, I love that they put fried eggs on just about everything. Heaven. The cheese sausages are hilarious! They are like funky cheese sticks.

the trip i am on is one called motherhood & self identity. How to be an amazing mother while carving out time for myself and retaining a piece of my own identity. While being a good partner to my husband and friend to my friends. Balance. That’s my trip. I’ll let you know when i get there

My idea of a successful traveling is when I don’t forget to pack anything and remember to pack everything when I come back. Also, because I love to eat I probably would have mapped out a couple places I’d for sure want to try, so if all those are crossed off my list then mission accomplished indeed
