I’m sorry you’re not here in Hong Kong with me, I really am. It’s a great place for a food blogger— never-ending cheap, interesting, delicious foods, and so much walking that you are turned into a bottomless pit. No wonder the Hongkies love their food. And no wonder they are all so slender.
My legs are aching all over, and I got tons of biceps curls in from all the shopping bags I have been carrying all around town…but today…was a good day. Even better than yesterday, because today, both Jing Wen and I got a full 8-10 hours of sleep. We woke up to the sound of rain pattering on the windows. This morning, we even had a leisurely fellowship together. We read Psalms 143, shared a bit about our own thoughts regarding the verses, and prayed together. We prayed for each other, and prayed for good weather.
By the time we got ready to leave, the rain had stopped.
I think God showed us that He was with us through the weather. The weather today was kinda horrible: constant, random torrents throughout the day. But somehow, we evaded all the heavy downpours and most of the drizzles. Praise the Lord! But then, how can He deny the prayer requests of His two adorable daughters?
That’s us, in case you needed clarification…
We decided to hit the museums over at Tsim Sha Tsui today, since the museums are free on a Wednesday. But we got lost when we reached the Tsim Sha Tsui station. We spent about an hour wandering around looking for the museums, and asked several people for directions, but most of them just shrugged their problems, said “I don’t know” and walked away muttering under their breath in Cantonese. I’m starting to think that Hongkies are sorta rude!
Still, the streets around Tsim Sha Tsui was interesting. It was a rather different feel from Mong Kok—more modern, cleaner, and hip. It felt a lot like Orchard of Singapore, or even like the Times Square in NYC.
But after an hour, we gave up and hailed a cab to the museum:
We were hungry by then, so we started looking for a place to eat. We spent another 30 minutes wandering around looking for someplace within our budget…All the restaurants in Tsim Sha Tsui is damn expensive!! But we finally came across a familiar chain called Maxim’s MX:
Maxim’s MX is a fast food chain selling local favorite home-style foods. It’s not as cheap as other fast food places, but cheap enough for the both of us. Certainly cheaper than the other high-end restaurants in that city!
It must be popular, because it was really crowded. Or perhaps it’s the free TV stations that attract people!
Ain’t that cool? I wonder what will happen if McDonald’s started having something like this.
I ordered the steamed rice with preserved fish and minced pork (HKD$28):
I’m not sure I should recommend this to the non-Chinese…It’s delicious, but it smells really Chinese, if you know what I mean. As in, the pork smells strongly of pork and tendons and fat, while the fish has a putrid odor. I actually liked it a lot!
The rice is steamed in a special tin with the other ingredients so that the flavor is intensified. I doused some soy sauce over:
The pork is really tender. Juicy, and even slightly sweet:
Jing Wen ordered the egg omelete with sausages, mushrooms and onions on rice (HKD$25):
It wasn’t bad, but I secretly felt like I could make a better omelet. And it badly needed some ketchup.
I did like that it had copious amounts of onions in it:
After that we were all pumped up for the museum!
We hit up the Museum of History:
Which turned out to be…kind of boring. Maybe it was because we were full, and the museum had this peaceful, dark atmosphere that lulled us to a drowsy trance, but I was sleepy! ![]()
We decided to get out of there, and pick up some sweets to perk us up:
Pudding flavored chocolates. Oh my GAWWWD!!! The BEST shit ever! So luscious, and such an intense caramelized flavor! Look, it is even shaped like a flan!
We got this at a Japanese candy market. Hong Kong seems to have a fetish for Japanese sweets. Well, I don’t blame them…Japanese candies are spectacular, and so fascinating! Check this out:
Maple flavored Pretz! Pretz are little cracker sticks, and this had a subtle maple flavor that made for a lovely sweet and savory snack.
I also bought another version of Pretz:
Honey Pomelo flavor. Citrusy sweet. Awesome. And also a butter-flavored Pretz:
Intense buttery flavor. Yum!
I did not like their iced coffee:
It was like 70% milk and 30% coffee. Basically, I got iced milk with a touch of coffee. Blergh.
We walked around Tsim Sha Tsui for awhile, and then went back to Mong Kok to shop, where I proceeded to throw my cash around with abandon again. There were just too many cool stuff; how could I resist? Check out this cute necklace:
I didn’t get it though. Jing Wen convinced me not to. But I bought two more necklaces, a top, a cardigan, a pair of skinny jeans, and a pair of flats. Tomorrow, I said to myself, tomorrow I start over with a fresh budget. No, really.
After a few hours of shopping, we decided to call it a day. We trudge off with refreshed appetite for food—namely, a fast food restaurant recommended by a fellow Hongkie friend of mine, Freshness Burger:
I have to admit, the main reason I wanted to visit this place was because its hamburger buns are made with pumpkin. Yes, pumpkin!! I told you Asians have a passion for all things pumpkin!
This place looked pretty posh for a fast food chain. They even sold pasta! The price wasn’t all that cheap, either. Even more expensive than Maxim’s. I got the original Freshness burger:
Beef burger, minced meat in tomato sauce, cheese, mayo, and tomato on pumpkin bun.
Wow. Wow! This puts all other fast food restaurants to shame. It was amazing!!! Really really fresh ingredients, home-baked buns, and popping flavor. I even loved the mayo in there…Japanese mayo rocks!
I also love that they serve their burger in little baskets:
Jing Wen ordered the limited edition vegetarian burger:
Tofu steak, avocado, mayo, and tomato on seeded bun.
I had my reservations because it’s tofu…but it was actually pretty damn amazing!
On the way home, I picked up even more snacks:
And some more amazing carbilicious stuff for the night:
Green tea cream buns. This was a green tea bun filled with fresh cream and red bean paste. DELICIOUS!!
I also got a steamed green tea “muffin” with whole red beans:
I love this. The best “muffin” I’ve ever had.
And finally, a sugar-crusted green tea and walnut bun:
This wasn’t as good as the above two, because the green tea flavor was too subtle. But still yummy! Can you tell I love green tea flavored stuff?
I’m stuffed. Seriously stuffed. But I’ll walk it off tomorrow again. And I’m meeting an old friend, who happens to live in Hong Kong now tomorrow for dim sum, so I can’t wait! Have fun, everyone, wherever you are!

Pumpkin bun?!? Can you taste the pumpkin??
OMG HK looks great! My bestie just went there but her adventures didn’t seem quite as colourful. Lol. I’m sitting here scratching my head wondering where you managed to find such awesome eats! Seriously, when I was last in HK, everything seemed a little… drab. Glad you’re having fun with Jing Wen. And that pumpkin bun looks crazy amazing!
Btw, when we were living there, my family and I used to enjoy eating the roast goose. Be on the look out for that but make sure it’s a good place cos when I returned a couple of years back with a friend of mine, we went to some random eatery and their goose was cold and icky. Biiiig no-no!!
Nat xoxo

noo tv in mcdonalds. people would be so much more obese than what has been happening so far…
I love all the green tea and beans incorporated into the food.
is it hard or would it be difficult to get around only knowing English?
It’ll be hard getting around if you only know English…but I speak Mandarin, too! Most people here seem to speak a little Mandarin.
Cool! Now I want to park myself at one of those free TV stations with some maple pretzels!
I am so jealous of all those sweets — I wish I could get that stuff here! The pudding chocolate sounds especially amazing!
I saw Freshness Burger here in Tokyo yesterday and laughed a lot at the name. (One of those things where they choose to advertise what should be obvious and expected…I should hope the burgers are fresh!) However I am sad that I haven’t found any Pretz yet because they look pretty cool. I’ll have to go on a scouting mission for them later today.

The televisions are crazy. I’ll admit, I would be sort of annoyed if we got those here. Don’t you think we watch ENOUGH tv here in America?! Yikes.
Glad you are getting some good eats, and great shopping in! Everything looks amazing. And I agree, omelets gotta have ketchup
Glad you are having fun and enjoying all the delicious food.
Must. Have. Pumpkin. Burger.
………………..
I now have a sudden urge to hit up countless restaurants so that I may go to foodie heaven. I would also like to wander around markets full of cute items and food. Everything looks so cute/tasty and I’m annoyed that I’ve been eating the same food items everyday. Well, kind of annoyed. My food is boring but tasty.
Hahaha, as a Hongky myself, I think most Hongkies are rude, perhaps they were shy to show you that they don’t speak English so the words that came up in their mind were “I don’t know”.
Sophia, if you have time, we may meet up for a lunch?
Mmm, the burgers look superb!!!
I just love all the colours and variety – and a restaurant with little TV screens! How cool
I’m not surprised it’s like a foodie dream for you, the food is kind of like art in itself!
Sarah x
Oh geez oh geez oh geeez!! I can’t WAIT to go to Hong Kong in a month!!! AHHH! So much good food! My aunt is going to get me authentic dan tat and I can’t wait!! Just so you know, Sophia, I’m copying down parts of your posts so that I can check these places out when I get to HK. I’m bummed that you didn’t like the history museum because that’s on my “must do” list! I’m excited to see what you think of dim sum!!!!!!
Two adorable daughters, indeed! You two are too cute
This makes me want to visit Hong Kong so badly!! I love all those Japanese sweets…I’ve always been intrigued by the bright colors and odd shapes of Asian candies and pastries! And your friend’s tofu burger looks delicious, totally something I would order. Glad you’re having fun!!
My sentiments are like yours – sometimes I find them kinda rude! Maybe it is the tone of Cantonese…I really don’t know! Even in their famous eateries, the servers are usually rude.
OK…I am going backwards…going to your day 1 now ;p
Wow–looks like there is always something to keep you busy over there!!
And you do such a wonderful job of recapping your day; it makes me feel
like I am there!
So. Much. Awesome. Food. Pumpkin buns?? Green tea muffins? Pudding chocolate?? I love it all! I was supposed to do a student exchange to Hong Kong in high school and the trip got cancelled because of SARS. I’m still bitter about it!!
What fun, I have serious food envy looking at all the pictures – I was thinking about doing a post on Prez – they have the most amazing range of flavors. Ah, you have me seriously thinking of HK. So glad you’re having a good time.
Freshness Burger! I remember seeing that all over in Tokyo whenever I would visit my parents. Never did get to try it, but I’m not surprised they use pumpkin in the buns. I definitely spotted pumpkin bread in the grocery stores a few times.
Pretz is awesome, eh? Seems like you enjoy it just a bit.
Wahhh… u do luvvvv Pretz duncha?? LOL
Oh my..ur so tempting me to go HK now! ;p
