I thought I was gonna die yesterday.
Okay, I’m being melodramatic, but seriously, yesterday was not a good day for me. First of all, I woke up with a splitting headaches, chills, and aches all over my body. But I had a research paper to finish, so I staggered over to my laptop and tried to get at least a few paragraphs down.
Then I had a few questions to ask my professor about the paper, to which she kept eluding the questions and instead admonished me, saying that she was “very disappointed” that I didn’t get it. I also got a threat from an anonymous commenter digging up a past mistake I made half a year ago, which really was more ridiculous than upsetting.
Oh, and worse of all, I couldn’t even eat without getting extremely nauseated. Sucks. As. Hell.
What’s a girl to do? Dig into her covers and sleep it off, of course. So I did. I slept the whole day off, and woke up at midnight with an even worse headache than ever. Oh, joy. But honestly, despite having way too much sleep than I needed, I still had a lot of trouble getting out of bed. Now I understood what that saying “bury oneself in a hole” meant…when bad things culminate all at once, you really just want to seclude yourself and never come out.
But I eventually did. Because I really needed to pee. If not, I probably would have stayed under the covers a bit longer. Still, once I was up, I felt oddly better, and my stomach started growling for food. Hunger—always a good sign, I say.
I also strangely had a sudden craving to read the bible. I happened to turn to Psalms, which are mostly songs King David wrote to praise God—most of it written during his worst times of distress. My “horrible” day was nothing compared to David’s own problems: he had enemies from all corners seeking his head, had no home and was constantly on the run for his life, was overridden with guilt over his sin of murder, and his whole family was crumbling apart. And yet, he always, always praised God.
David often symbolizes courage. But I think his true courage is not his defeat of Goliath, but his ability to call upon God immediately during his distress, and hold fast to His faith that God will deliver him. Instead of hiding in his bed (like I did), he grabs his harp and sings praises to God. How freaking incredible is that? This guy is my hero.
I’m not gonna start singing, of course, for the sake of my roommate’s sanity. But I would love to share the same confidence and joy David had, not just during the good times, but especially during the hard times, too.
Oh, and I’m fine now. I suspect that the major reason for my headache was because I slept way too much trying to avoid conflict and that annoying research paper. My stomach is still sensitive to food though, so I’m watching what I eat. I guess I won’t be having greasy gyros anytime soon, as I did last week. Let me just torture myself by recalling that amaaaazing gyro I had…
My church friends and I went to this popular Greek place called Papa Cristos.
Papa Cristos is actually a real person, a diminutive Greek owner of the place. He may be small, but his business is booming!
I was aghast by the line that Sunday afternoon! (By the way, there were more customers lining up outside the door).
I almost wanted to turn to another restaurant because I was hungry, but my friends insisted that we stay, because large customers=good food, right? Well, I’m glad I listened to them, because the food truly was awesome.
Papa Cristos is more than just a restaurant; it is also a deli-takeaway and a little market selling Greek speciality foods like marinated olives, Greek beer, and dolmas.
They also fresh-bake their own bread, which is always a huge plus for me. They even have their own pastries like baklavas!
But I had only one thing in mind that day, and that was to satisfy my craving for gyros. Thus I had no problem deciding on what I wanted, despite the extensive menu:
It took a good 30-40 minutes for our food to be done, so I amused myself by browsing the little Greek market. I also could not resist buying a mound of goat’s brie cheese, despite the fact that I need still need to clear out my pantry:
When the food finally arrived, we had to picnic out because the interior was so crowded. But that’s okay, because guess who was outside, too?
Why, Papa Cristos himself! Aw, he was so small and cute with his little white moustache! Like a teddy bear. But a powerful and smart business teddy bear, of course. This guy really knows how to make a good gyro. Check this out:
This was freaking HUGE. It was absolutely STUFFED with shaved lamb and beef meat.
The pita bread around it seemed to have been lightly fried as well. Either that, or it soaked up all of the meat’s juices and grease to make an utterly flavorful sandwich.
I tried to bite into it with my hands like a sandwich, but my mouth just wouldn’t cooperate, so at last I had to resort to using a fork.
Do you see those chunks of lovely meat? Heaven in a pita!
My friends and I also ordered a couple savory pies to share, the Spanakopita (spinach & feta) and the Tiropita (cheese):
The Spanakopita was the clear favorite with the combination of spinach and feta. The Tiropita was okay, but the cheese was a bit funky.
Oh, and most of my friends ordered the same gyro as me, but one of them ordered the Greek chicken pizza:
Which looked pretty good. Another ordered the spaghetti and meat sauce:
Spaghetti in a Greek restaurant. Hm. No comment. Oh, and Aletheia, Valerie says hi!
Hiiii.
Ah, I’m craving gyros again. I guess looking back into all these food porn pictures was a bad idea, hee.
Question of the day: Favorite Greek food? And ever had a day when you just want to crawl into the bed and hide from the world?

Mmmm now I’M craving gyros too! So good. Haven’t had that in forever. Definitely one of my favourite Greek foods!
I’m really glad that you’re feeling better, Sophia. Sometimes taking a break from everything and getting plenty of rest is exactly what we need.
Boo for not feeling well, but double boo for anonymous comments, especially threatening ones! I am glad you are back among the living. Did you ever get that research paper question answered?
Sorry to hear that you weren’t feeling well
I have had many days like that.
I love spanikopita!
Sorry people left rude anonymous comments. Did this person know you? I hate that crap!
Papa Cristos looks like heaven on earth. We need to go. I would get exactly what you ordered. YUM! I am such a sucker for gyro.
never had true greek food!
hey re: saturday- i might be working a game that day- getting volunteer hours. can you do next weekend?
So much awesome Greek food! I gotta say, hummus is my all-time favorite Greek food:)
I really love greek food! I love yalantzi (the stuffed grape leaves). I love tzatziki and hummus, especially with warm pita bread. I always get the vegetarian souvlaki sandwich at my favorite Greek place, or Greek pizza or falafel or this thing called imam baldi (with eggplant). SO GOOD. Now I’m hungry! Greek places usually have great side salads and lentil soups too!
I have days of not wanting to get out of bed. I usually pick myself up, but there are days when I just want to crash and hide.
I love gyros!!! This is one place I gotta hit up. Maybe before I leave for my trip, if, not then definitely after I get back.
Glad thing have simmer down from your crazy day. I’ve had many of those days before. But I had to force myself out of bed just to be able to get stuff that I needed done.
Oh Sophia, I had a crawl into bed day yesterday. I literally came home from work and slept until dinner, ate, then went back to bed. I wasn’t feeling good, but also just didn’t feel like “dealing” with any of my stress. Thankfully I’m doing better today, sometimes I think we just need those days every now and then to “center” ourselves.
Favorite greek food would have to be hummus and pita!!
Eek, thats not a fun sickness. But at least you had the Psalms, I love Psalms! And that gyro look amazingly delicious!
Glad you are feeling better! I haven’t really ever had Greek food…I have to go with baklava!
This is week is the Greek Food Festival here in Pittsburgh. As a freshman I wandered into the festivities and inhaled the best baklava of my life. I already have plans to make it there again tomorrow! Unfortunately, it’s not very vegetarian friendly, but there’s nothing like lots of layered spinach and feta to make me forget about all of the lamb being eaten — not to pass judgement; I’ve just never cared for lamb.
Sophia you need some yoga or exercises to manage stress
What a beautiful Greek site baklavas, wow I want them with the chicken pizza
Cheers,
Gera
My favorite greek food is spanikopita. Definitely delicious! I need to make them sometime so that I can atisfy the craving more often. I do have days where I want to crawl into bed and disappear from the world, too.
God always knows what we need to read at the right moments, doesn’t he?!?! Hope you find the courage like David had.
Stress is a bitch and does funny things, but my body usually waited until AFTER exams when I had time off to suddenly go haywire. Anyway, nothing pisses me off more than not being able to eat, so I’m glad that’s coming back for you.
As for not wanting to get out of bed–who doesn’t have those days? Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much I sleep, there are days when I could become a hermit and shut out the world. I get my butt up and then I’m usually OK, but it’s tempting.
Hummus. Although I don’t have much Greek experience–hummus.
Wow, I absolutely love what you wrote about David. I have a tendency to try to rely on myself for some time, and then when that isn’t working (since it never does), THEN I turn to God for help. But David is a great example of courageously turning to God RIGHT AWAY, by singing praises no less! Definitely a great example! I never thought of it in quite those terms before…thanks for bringing it to light!
i love greek food! isn’t it great that food has such healing powers?
Yum I adore Greek food! We actually had take out from a little locally owned place last night. J had the gyro and I had the souvlaki. HEAVENLY! Their gyros are so big that we each can only eat half! We usually get one and split it, so J has half still in the fridge. I might have to steal the other half now!
I’m glad you’re feeling better and hope everything winds down soon for you! School is almost over and then you have a summer of travels to look forward to!
I definitely have days where I want to stay in bed all day. Being without work now also facilitates it more than I should allow. Oh well – the sun has started FINALLY shining and warming up this frozen tundra so hopefully that’ll help the mood!
A long line is always a good sign! Looks like it was worth the wait from the looks of all that scrumptious Greek food.
hoping you are feeling tops very soon sophia. thank you for your musings on David. i always struggled with his story a little, i guess the whole bathsheba thing, but then i recognize that every time David sinned against God, he truly lamented and repented and i think this is the lesson with David in that regard. we keep screwing up (well i do at least!) and we keep running back, and God is always there with open arms. always.
never been big on the greek food.
Glad you’re feeling better.
Hummus! Wait, is hummus Greek? If not, Greek salad with lots of feta.
thank you for posting about papa christos!!!! i have been wanting to try this place since moving to los angeles 4 years ago. my husband and i had moved from a majorly greek neighborhood in nyc and haven’t been able to find good greek food in l.a. – this place has been on the list but we just gave up b/c we felt like it wouldn’t compare. i have a coupon for it, though, so i’ll have to give it try – it looks cute!
glad your feeling better! what you had sounds absolutely awful! i totally know what you mean about sleeping it off too. sleep = cure all for me.
I love Greek food…one of my favorite places is Ulysses Voyage at the Grove’s Farmer’s Market. Love their lemon potatoes and salmon salad.
I am glad you are feeling better.
I like to hide in bed sometimes
and I love alllll Greek food – so yum!
Aww, Papa Christos is so cute!
Mmm, I do love Greek food, though I always wish that it were somehow spicier than it is.
I’m busy the next two weeks. Instead of taking advantage, I would prefer to crawl into bed! I’m not sure why I act like this. On another note I tried Papa Cristos for the first time on Friday! I really liked it, especially the baklava! I didn’t realize it was right across the street from the venue where the Greek Fest was last year. Pretty neat!
I’ve had a few of these days thus far. but guess what? The worst is over and you made it through! Good job.
Greek food is so awesome. Especially gyros. All that meat. Flavor. Heaven. AGHHHH!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH MY GOSH.
*LOVES*
*DIES WITH HAPPINESS*
*OK NOT ACTUALLY DIES* (resisting screaming VALERIE!!! at the top of my lungs)
OK so I can’t really say that Greek is my kind of food BUT your flakey (in the good sense) spanakopita DOES look pretty convincing…
Isn’t it amazing how being physically sick can cause us to crave His word?
He truly wants us to depend on Him and lean on Him, particularly when we’re just weaklings! Thank you for sharing your enjoyment of Psalms with us.
I’ve had plenty of those days, too! Sometimes, it does help to give in to the urge to hide away, but most of the time, it feels even better to face the obstacles and finally put them behind me. I’m sorry to hear about uncooperative instructors and mean commenters, yet you’ve found a way to deal with them and any other problems in a great way – food for the soul and the body. I could do with any one of those dishes from Papa Cristos. I love Greek food but my absolute favorites are the desserts: galaktoboureko (like custard), loukomades (honey puffs) and, of course, baklava and anything else made with phyllo, nuts and honey! Mmmmm. . .
i’m sorry you had a bad day, but glad that it’s looking up. i’ve definitely had those days, and it does often take courage to get my butt out of the door to face the world! good post.
the food looks awesome, especially the gyros!
Aww I hope you’re feeling better Sophia! And wow look at how filled up that gyro is! they mostly stuff ours with salad which is all very fine but sometimes you just want some more meat
hope youre feeling better sweetie and yes, we all have those days we just wanna hide and crawl away. YES! In fact, I just got a rude comment from someone attacking my lifestyle. Most definitely i either want to stop blogging or hide. Neither are probably gonna happen, but I kinda wish they would
love you!!!
xo
Seen, the meat looks tender and seems you have a very nice ‘food picnic’.
Oh gosh, I always have those days when I want to stay holed up and not venture out into the world. =/
But OMG YUM! That gyro looks freakin’ amazing! I love Greek food, but to pick a favorite? Ack, I don’t think I can right now.
Honey, it sounds like you had more going on than just the stresses in your life. Your symptoms sound like you actual had/have a physical illness that you’re recovering from so it was just bad luck that you were stressing at the same time! I’m sorry you’ve been feeling icky but if you’re getting your appetite back, I agree that’s a good sign. It kinda sounds like the flu or something, but I thought that was an exclusively winter bug. Anyway, that gyro looks good enough to convince me to try one again. I’ve had two and they were both awful with sort of burned musty meat but I’d love to give them another chance. I don’t think the midwest is capable of making good gyros–lol.
ahhh lemme see what i can do.
its a liver fluke!
I’m having a ‘wanting to crawl into bed and hide’ day today, mainly cos I have a job interview I’m nervous about! That Greek place looks cool, and I’m ashamed to say, I’ve never tried Greek food, I’m not even sure where the nearest place is to try it where I live…
Sarah x
Awww…glad that you are better.
About anonymous commentors, I detest them too – especially when they give malicious statements, and say discouraging stuff that makes u feel extremely defensive and itch to retaliate. That happened to me last year I think. Someone advised me to ignore the person…which explains why I had to start scanning my comments… and just delete anonymous comments whenever I saw the heading…
Mmm…gyros…I LOVE it! Especially with tzaziki!
Sorry to hear about your day, so glad you’re feeling better know. Take good care and a big, big hug to you!
xxx Julia (Taste of Living)
I don’t have Greek food often, so can’t say which is my favorite. Hope you are feeling better now….oh, those days in bed, not wanting to face the world – I have those runs very often.
i do have days like “Bad Day”! When you wake up in the morning and don’t feel like jumping out of bed but you have to because there are some things waiting! then I’ll think, hope it will rain so that i’ll have reason to be late or some other things!:)hahaha
Hey lovie!
Sorry to hear you were not feeling well! Glad you are better now!
I love Greek food, so much so I could seriously live off it forever! It all looks so good!!! The deli with all the food…jealous!!!
Sorry about your day, Sophia…but I’m glad you were able to turn it around!
As for the food, oh wow! I agree, long lines are always annoying but a very good sign. Gyros are my favorite Greek food (well, gyros and baklava
) and that one looks amazing!
I love Greek food. One of my favorite things about it is that so many dishes are vegetarian without having to tweak them…maybe not gyros, but things like falafel, hummus, babaghanouj, feta, olives…I’m salivating just thinking about them!! And that place sounds just as delicious and authentic as it looks!
I had a day like that on Monday, following a fight with a friend, but was able to turn it around. Ironically, the fight was about religion…it’s tough when your friends don’t respect your opinions. I managed to turn it around by telling myself that whatever happens will happen, and whoever is meant to be in my life will be there.
Hope you have a great hump day!!
Now THERE’S the kind of meal my Greek yaya liked to make! If she were still alert and in good spirits, she’d adopt you for eating the homecooked Greek meals I don’t
Great post!
Take care girl. Surly the the gyro cheered you up.
I like Greek food as well, especially tzatziki!
hope you’re feeling better! That gyro looks fantastic, gyros are certainly my favorite! I’ve been making some at home, need to post about them sometime soon.
Feeling awful sucks. I just try not to dwell on it; reflect for a bit then engage myself with some healthy stimuli. It’s all you can do.
My stepdad is the Greekiest Greek to ever philosophize/fight a war with Troy/get his gods and lifestyle ripped off by everyone. He’s introduced me to the beauties of Greek yogurt, lemon-and-egg soup (weird but delicious), the lovely spanakopita–but I must say that my favorite is a tomato-and-egg dish that is alluding me at the moment, as well as just anything simple with seafood and olive oil. Greek food is unbeatable simplicity, clean and satisfying flavors!
