Hi, I’m Finally Out Of Bed

May 4, 2010

in eating out,God,Los Angeles,My story

I thought I was gonna die yesterday.

Okay, I’m being melodramatic, but seriously, yesterday was not a good day for me. First of all, I woke up with a splitting headaches, chills, and aches all over my body. But I had a research paper to finish, so I staggered over to my laptop and tried to get at least a few paragraphs down.

Then I had a few questions to ask my professor about the paper, to which she kept eluding the questions and instead admonished me, saying that she was “very disappointed” that I didn’t get it. I also got a threat from an anonymous commenter digging up a past mistake I made half a year ago, which really was more ridiculous than upsetting.

Oh, and worse of all, I couldn’t even eat without getting extremely nauseated. Sucks. As. Hell.

What’s a girl to do? Dig into her covers and sleep it off, of course. So I did. I slept the whole day off, and woke up at midnight with an even worse headache than ever. Oh, joy. But honestly, despite having way too much sleep than I needed, I still had a lot of trouble getting out of bed. Now I understood what that saying “bury oneself in a hole” meant…when bad things culminate all at once, you really just want to seclude yourself and never come out.

But I eventually did. Because I really needed to pee. If not, I probably would have stayed under the covers a bit longer. Still, once I was up, I felt oddly better, and my stomach started growling for food. Hunger—always a good sign, I say.

I also strangely had a sudden craving to read the bible. I happened to turn to Psalms, which are mostly songs King David wrote to praise God—most of it written during his worst times of distress. My “horrible” day was nothing compared to David’s own problems: he had enemies from all corners seeking his head, had no home and was constantly on the run for his life, was overridden with guilt over his sin of murder, and his whole family was crumbling apart. And yet, he always, always praised God.

David often symbolizes courage. But I think his true courage is not his defeat of Goliath, but his ability to call upon God immediately during his distress, and hold fast to His faith that God will deliver him. Instead of hiding in his bed (like I did), he grabs his harp and sings praises to God. How freaking incredible is that? This guy is my hero.

I’m not gonna start singing, of course, for the sake of my roommate’s sanity. But I would love to share the same confidence and joy David had, not just during the good times, but especially during the hard times, too.

Oh, and I’m fine now. I suspect that the major reason for my headache was because I slept way too much trying to avoid conflict and that annoying research paper. My stomach is still sensitive to food though, so I’m watching what I eat. I guess I won’t be having greasy gyros anytime soon, as I did last week. Let me just torture myself by recalling that amaaaazing gyro I had…

My church friends and I went to this popular Greek place called Papa Cristos

IMG_3487  Papa Cristos is actually a real person, a diminutive Greek owner of the place. He may be small, but his business is booming!
IMG_3482 I was aghast by the line that Sunday afternoon! (By the way, there were more customers lining up outside the door).
IMG_3481 I almost wanted to turn to another restaurant because I was hungry, but my friends insisted that we stay, because large customers=good food, right? Well, I’m glad I listened to them, because the food truly was awesome.
IMG_3480 Papa Cristos is more than just a restaurant; it is also a deli-takeaway and a little market selling Greek speciality foods like marinated olives, Greek beer, and dolmas.
IMG_3479They also fresh-bake their own bread, which is always a huge plus for me. They even have their own pastries like baklavas!
IMG_3483 But I had only one thing in mind that day, and that was to satisfy my craving for gyros. Thus I had no problem deciding on what I wanted, despite the extensive menu:
IMG_3486 It took a good 30-40 minutes for our food to be done, so I amused myself by browsing the little Greek market. I also could not resist buying a mound of goat’s brie cheese, despite the fact that I need still need to clear out my pantry:
IMG_3490 When the food finally arrived, we had to picnic out because the interior was so crowded. But that’s okay, because guess who was outside, too?
IMG_3493 Why, Papa Cristos himself! Aw, he was so small and cute with his little white moustache! Like a teddy bear. But a powerful and smart business teddy bear, of course. This guy really knows how to make a good gyro. Check this out:
IMG_3491 This was freaking HUGE. It was absolutely STUFFED with shaved lamb and beef meat.
IMG_3497  The pita bread around it seemed to have been lightly fried as well. Either that, or it soaked up all of the meat’s juices and grease to make an utterly flavorful sandwich.
IMG_3498 I tried to bite into it with my hands like a sandwich, but my mouth just wouldn’t cooperate, so at last I had to resort to using a fork.
IMG_3496 Do you see those chunks of lovely meat? Heaven in a pita!
IMG_3499 My friends and I also ordered a couple savory pies to share, the Spanakopita (spinach & feta) and the Tiropita (cheese):
IMG_3500 The Spanakopita was the clear favorite with the combination of spinach and feta. The Tiropita was okay, but the cheese was a bit funky.
IMG_3503 Oh, and most of my friends ordered the same gyro as me, but one of them ordered the Greek chicken pizza:
IMG_3501 Which looked pretty good. Another ordered the spaghetti and meat sauce:
IMG_3502 Spaghetti in a Greek restaurant. Hm. No comment. Oh, and Aletheia, Valerie says hi!
IMG_3485 Hiiii. :D

Ah, I’m craving gyros again. I guess looking back into all these food porn pictures was a bad idea, hee.

Question of the day: Favorite Greek food? And ever had a day when you just want to crawl into the bed and hide from the world?

Oh I love me a big gyro with lots of greek sauce and cucumbers. But in reality I tend to eat my body weight in hummus. :)

I have had those days where I want to hide from the world. I don’t always have the luxury of doing so. On those days I pray to God for peace and strength then the day ends up going well.

Believe it or not, I’ve never actually had Greek food.

I hate days like that — glad you’re feeling somewhat better!

glad you’re feeling a bit better :)

REAL Gyros are hard to beat. The meat is delicious, homemade pitas are amazing, and there’s nothing better, really. We have a great authentic place here, too.

Haha, yeah, that happens to me when I get migraines but now more than ever since I’m nearly the six month mark in my pregnancy I just want to SLEEP! I never get enough sleep it seems so when I get home from work sometimes I just plunk down and take a little nap so I can function. Usually I just want to curl up in bed and stay there though.

I’m glad you’re feeling better! Maybe you’re just feeling a bit overstressed right now?

That Greek place sounds quite good. I have no idea what my favorite Greek food is because I don’t believe I’ve had any/much of it. When I go to Greece I’ll be able to answer this question though. ;)

Glad you’re feeling better. You’re probably right about the cause of your feeling that way. I don’t get sick that much, but occasionally in college I would come down with something nasty usually from a combination of stress, anxiety and the like. I think it may be helpful as well to cut yourself a little slack. Take some time to relax every once and awhile (as it sounds like you were able to do when going out for greek food). I know it seems like at the end of the semester there is no way to squeeze in free time, but I always found that little breaks were tremendously helpful.

I have such a crush on Greek food! There are a lot of things I love, but hummus is a way of life for me. I have had many a day when I just want to crawl into the giant comfy hole that is my bed and sleep the day away…

I can definitely relate to those days you just want to hole up in bed. I’m very happy to hear you are feeling better now. I wonder what it was? I would guess stress. Luckily the semester is almost done for you! Glad the Psalms helped you out. David is one awesome dude.

Spanokopita is so good!

today is one of those days…actually, yesterday was too. can this week just end now? Thanks.

Greek food: anything with tzatziki or pastry has my heart so that gyro and spanakopita have my name all over them. Have you tried pasticcio? Also amazing. As is Moussaka. Dang, I want to just pack a bag and go to Greece and start over. Want to come?

Oh man, I hope you’re fully recovered by now! Being bedridden is the last thing you need during finals, eh?

Spanakopita is totally my favorite Greek food. The one in your picture looks awesome. Actually, I used to live near a Greek pizza restaurant, and I think that might be my favorite pizza ever in life. Sadly I’m too far away to enjoy it these days, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget it! Athens Pizza in Stamford, CT, I miss you…

Haha! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking some time out for yourself when things get a little hectic. Take the time to rest and get your thoughts together, and you’ll be able to come back fresh faced and with a better perspective on things most of the time! I’ve been sickly too lately so I feel your pain though!

I hate anonymous rude comments. If you’re gonna be rude at least have the guts to own up to it. Sorry you weren’t feeling too well. Glad you’re better now though. I hate having those kinda days, especially with little ones now. Not only don’t I get to sleep it out but I have to drag my butt up to take care of 2 other oh so needy people.

Oh ugh, yes, I’ve had those days. Not fun! I’m glad you are feeling better.

This Greek food looks amazing. And yes, heaven in a pita is a great way to describe it, or at least that’s what it looks like form the pictures!! I LOVE Greek food, but I rarely eat it…why?? I always get the Greek salads at restaurants because I think black olives and feta are the best combination in the world. And that Greek chicken pizza looks orgasmic.

Glad you iz feeling better! Hot damn, that gyro looks good!

I love a good hummus. And tzatziki sauce. I prefer Turkish though, which is similar but just a tad better.

Lol, I always went back and forth on my thoughts on David. A very interesting character. The whole Uriah thing was kind of jerky ;-)

I’m glad you’re feeling better, Sophia. I’ve had those moments where I just want to “crawl into a hole”, so I usually force myself to go for a long walk (away from people) which doesn’t solve the problem(s) but at least helps me feel better.

That gyro brings up all my memories of Greek festivals and delicious Greek food. Spit-roasted lamb and feta – yuuum. Love your headband!

My favorite greek foods would have to be feta and kalamata olives. As a meal, I’d have to go with greek salad. Obviously I haven’t explored the world of Greek food too much yet!

I’ve been trying out a lot of random greek recipes, and the best I’ve found yet is this greek recipe – it totally remind me of my childhood. I dont remember much of it except for the spicy smells and tasty food on every street.
