Why Are We So Sensitive About Something We Poop Out?

March 6, 2010

in blog awards,eating out,My story,USC

Hahaha, it was hilarious seeing you guys try to guess which was the lie to the little “Seek the Lie” game on my last post. Though, a few of you made a boo-boo and guessed the truth instead. Okay, I’ll put an end to your torture and reveal the answer:

So here was my 6 truths and 1 lie (Not 6 lies and 1 truth!):

  1. I did Chinese dance when I was in the first and second grade in Singapore. Once, I had to dress up as a duck, complete with bright yellow feathers around my buttocks.

    –> Truth!
I even have pictures to prove it. I had a duck beak for a hat, and I wore this bright yellow leotard, and my “dance” moves were basically waddling after a mother duck, who wore a brown leotard. Until now, I have no idea what possessed me to agree to do such a humiliating act.

  2. I can’t stand chocolate-flavored anything like chocolate ice-cream, brownies, chocolate muffins, etc.

    –> Truth!
I even gave the answer away later in the post when I mentioned I don’t like chocolate in my food! I like plain chocolate by itself…but for some reason, detest it combined with anything else. I especially have a strong dislike for chocolate chip cookies. When I first came to America, I forced myself to eat them to live out the cookies-and-milk dream I had. I managed to choke them down by dipping them in lots and lots of ketchup.

  3. I once almost drowned trying to do gymnastics in the baby pool. I did a head-stand, and got stuck with my head immersed in the water and my legs flailing in the air.

    –> Truth!
This was the second time I almost drowned. The first when I was pretending to be a pirate looking for sunken treasure. My imagination will one day kill me.

  4. I have a strange habit of gauging the price of anything with the number of Supersize McDonald’s french fries. For example, this sweater is worth 15 Supersize McD’s french fries!

    –> Truth!
    By the way, I spent 40 Supersize McD’s french fries worth of groceries today at Costco. Boo hoo. T___T;;

  5. I did beam gymnastics in Singapore. I am uncannily flexible, and I totally rocked at the beam.

    –> Lie!
Congrats to all who guessed #5 as the lie! Beam? Are you kidding me? I’m the clumsiest person on earth, and I have the scars to prove it. I did trampoline gymnastics instead, and I was horrible, because I just did not know how to tighten my muscles. Also, I was a total slacker and only did gymnastics because I had a crush on one of the gymnasts.

  6. There was a time when I was obsessed with bagels. I ate 6 bagels for dinner every single day. Guess which kind? Cheese, of course.

    –> Truth!
What is so impossible to believe about eating 6 bagels? Believe it. They were good bagels too: Noah’s bagels from Costco. Remember: never, ever, ever underestimate a petite Asian female’s ability to eat.

  7. I’m a deadly deep-sleeper. I need 2 alarm clocks to wake me up, and even so I still sleep through them frequently. I once fell off the double bunk bed but still did not wake up. Maybe I fainted in my sleep?

    –> Truth!
When I’m asleep, I’m basically a corpse. Why do you think I miss so many morning classes? Because I sleep through my 2 alarm clocks. I can sleep standing up, too. I once fell asleep while walking. I almost fell off the rail.

That was so fun, I might do something like this in the near future again. Wheee! Thanks for playing, guys!

Oh, and before I forget, here’s a shot of what I had for Fried Food Thursday:

IMG_2909 I was gonna get fries from my school dining hall, but they happened to have an Asian theme going on…and I haven’t had bastardized Chinese food for a long time, so I thought, why not?
IMG_2910It’s deep-fried tofu doused in a sweet-and-sour sauce, by the way. It was okay. Not to sound arrogant, but I’ll bet I can make a meaner, leaner version of this myself. But that’s for another time.

Today, it’s not about recipes, it’s just about going out and enjoying other people’s recipes. I’ve had a lot of you ask me where I get my inspiration for recipes. Well, my inspiration is, simply, from eating other people’s food. That’s the joy of going out to eat. You get to try something you’ve never eaten before, something that introduces you to new products, ingredients, techniques, and cultures.

And no matter how cool and wacky my recipes are…how can I compete with traditional recipes that have been passed down from family to family since 1923? I can’t. So, I just sit and eat my humble pie. Or in this case, my humble enchiladas.

Awhile ago, my church friends and I hit by a famous Mexican restaurant in downtown Los Angeles called El Cholo. El Cholo is a place rich with history, and prides itself of its authentic and traditional family recipes. But what impressed me most was the warm, hospitable vibe it exuded:
IMG_2766 The decor is Spanish-influenced, and the interior architecture is reminiscent of an earlier century. Kind of the place you want to be in on a chilly wintry night, sharing a mug of beer with strangers by the fire. The walls were also decorated with phots of early Los Angeles history and celebrities.
IMG_2769 The only thing that perturbed me was the dim lighting. I guess they would rather call it “warm, intimate, soft lighting”…but what the hell. I want to be intimate with my food, too…and how can I be when I can’t even see it?
IMG_2783 But the fish tank was cool, I’ll give them that! Random, but totally wicked cool!
IMG_2784IMG_2788Even the bathroom was oldie-style:
IMG_2787Sorry, couldn’t resist. It was a huge group of us ladies. Church ladies who lunch! Tee hee.
IMG_2768 The menu choices were rather limited, but that’s a good thing I suppose since the first clue to an unauthentic restaurant is a menu the size of…say, Cheesecake Factory.

I had trouble deciding what I wanted…so I asked the waiter for help, and he promptly pointed to the most expensive item on the menu. I, like a fool, took his advice and ordered that. I got the
Crabmeat Enchilada:
IMG_2773
Corn Tortillas wrapped around succulent crabmeat with Jalapeno-Cilantro Pesto Sauce, Sour Cream, Fresh Avocado, Black Beans and Rice.
IMG_2774 Here’s a secret: I did not take the picture at my table. After my waiter served me this dish, I took it and ran to a particular spot in the restaurant that had a teeny bit of natural light peeking in. That, my friend, is true dedication of an obsessed food blogger.
IMG_2775 Bad lighting aside, this dish…was fabulous. Holy crab! I’ve never had better enchiladas in my life! The crabmeat was utterly succulent, with that savory sweetness of good crabmeat.
IMG_2778 But the sauce…that Jalapeno-cilantro pesto sauce was definitely the star! It was rich and creamy, without being overly cloying or heavy. Perfecto!
IMG_2776 And the cheese! This was definitely a whole bucket of cheese! These people know the way to my heart!
IMG_2781 Most of my friends seemed to be watching their weight, and ordered the lighter Annie’s Early California Enchiladas:
IMG_2770Corn Tortilla stufed with Garden Fresh Vegetables, Spinach, Sauteed Mushrooms, and Jack Cheese, Corn and Tomato Salsa.
IMG_2772 And none of them could finish this.
IMG_2780
What? I don’t understand, I’m so confused. Because I sure had no trouble polishing off mine:
IMG_2782(I ate up that little portion of rice afterwards, just in case you were wondering)

You know, this reminds me…there was once an online forum with a topic asking what cuisine you dislike. I said I don’t really like Mexican food, because it’s a bit too greasy and messy…and frankly, ugly. A guy (I think he was Mexican) responded immediately, “Like your face!”

Wow. People get so sensitive about food. But I guess food is a lot more than taste. It’s got a sort of pride, a culture, a tradition, a story behind it. We all have our food memories and backgrounds and stories. There are certain food we grew up eating which stirs up nostalgia, or a flood of emotions. Food is an integral component in our lives, both physically and emotionally. I guess my “You Are What You Cook” Challenge touches on that, too.

Okay, reminder: Entries for the challenge is due…today! And so is the BSI entries. I will most likely post the winner on Tuesday, but next week’s BSI host will be announced before then so that there is plenty of time to submit your entries to the next BSI. I’m sorry this week’s BSI was posted so late; I was only notified on Tuesday late afternoon myself. But thanks to all who submitted previous posts! :-)

Question of the day: What is one food (or several) that instigates memories, traditions, emotions, etc. for you? And what is the most you’ve ever eaten in one seating?

Oops I misread last time and didn’t see that you changed the rules. hahaha So funny b/c I guessed your ONLY lie as the ONE truth. Boy was I majorly wrong. huh?!

The enchilado looks yummy! I’ve never had a crabmeat one. Sounds interesting!

Hmm a food that instigates memories, traditions, and emotions is definitely Italian. I’d have to say I love baked ziti b/c it makes me think of my mom b/c I love hers best. Making a pot of sauce makes me think of many relatives b/c I’ve seen so many of them make it over the years, and all in their own diff. way. Eggplant parmesan, which my family likes to make into a big casserole like a lasagna instead of just the singular patties reminds me of my Grammy. In fact the very last time I saw her we were in the hospital and my dad told her he made eggplant and she was quizzing him to make sure he did it the way she taught him. :) That always makes me smile now when I cook eggplant b/c I remember it.

The most I’ve ever eaten in one sitting is probably when I was a teenager. I was dancing like 5 days a week so I had a wicked metabolism. I would polish off huge amounts of food for fuel. I don’t remember anything in particular, though.

and bastardized chinese food. AMAZING. fried tofu is the bomb diggity though!!

I used to be totally bagel obsessed too! Now I still enjoy them sometimes but not as much. I love greasy fried tofu, yum :) My not so favourite cuisine? Hmm, I can’t even think of one – I generally love any ethnic cuisine that has veggie options.

That was so fun trying to guess which was the lie in your last post! Hehe… Oh, I love drinking soup. My dad’s Cantonese, so we have soup at home everyday. It reminds me of family love because Mum boils it for an entire day before we get to enjoy it at night. Just imagine all the goodness that’s inside. It makes me proclaim without a doubt: Mum provides only the best!

Hahaha…I got the lie wrong. Oh well. I like El Cholo. Actually, I love Mexican food. Especially tamales. It’s really been a while since I’ve been there. Mmmm…

One food that instigates memories for me would have to be chocolate. The most I ever eaten in one sitting a t-bone steak with some short stack of pancakes and a couple of eggs. This was when I was barely in high school, too. Yeah, I used to eat A LOT!!! I was slightly chubby in my younger years. If it’s something more recent, I think it would have to be the prime rib dinner I had last year at Lawry’s in Beverly Hills.

I hate to get all technical but El Cholo’s in Koreatown! I hope you made full use of the discount you get as a USC student! And I definitely recommend their green corn tamales when they’re in season. I used to by their frozen ones by the dozen. Thinking about it makes me want some.

Your writing cheered me up although my environment is quite a mess right now. I smiled and laughed and I have to thank you for that. I went to SF Thanh Long (original restaurant before they opened Crustacean) and had the house special crab and garlic noodles, and that was so very good. My mom’s baking was the best during my childhood and she cooked very good dishes too. Precious memories…. Thanks Sophia!

What an amazing looking restaurant!
The most I have eaten? oh gosh.
I think it was when I was little, and we had crepes. I could always eat like 7-8 of them. I would never allow myself that anymore

I love your posts..always entertaining and per a comment you left me the other day; we have totally diff styles of eating but i love coming to your bloggie and was glad you enjoy all my raw balls LOL :)

I dont like garlic, onions, curry, basically foods that make you sweat them out, stink you up, or make you reach for altoids for days…i am really sensitive to strong spices like that so that’s my foodie quirk.

People are usually like what, you dont like xyz??! No, I don’t. They are all shocked. And then Im like what, you don’t like raw brussels sprouts? And they’re like ewwww… :)

Hehe.. you are way too cute :o

The one food that instigates memories for me would have to be rouladen. I’m sure you know what it is.. it’s a family tradition for us that we usually have around christmas time. It’s a combination of mustard, pickles, onion and bacon wrapped up in beef. My mom makes it perfectly, and it always reminds me of my heritage. Sometimes living in Canada can make you forget that I actually do have culture running through my blood :P
I have never really had mexican food… other than the classic old el paso tacos you can buy at the grocery store. Your meal looks amazing though.. I love crab!

Cheese bagels? I wonder how it taste, the most fancy I had was a blueberry one, lol.

Ooooh look at that cheese! I wouldn’t have problems polishing off 3 plates like this one :)
The two dishes look similar, I wasn’t able to tell the difference, lol.

One dish that brings me back memories is… JIU NIANG TANG! You know, the rice fermented sweet and thick soup with the glutinous rice balls?? Ahhhh…<3

HAHAHA “never, ever, ever underestimate a petite Asian female’s ability to eat”. as a fellow petite asian female, that is SO TRUE! but i still thought 6 bagels EVERY night was a lot… maybe they were small bagels hehe. i love that you took your food to somewhere with a little light to take the picture!

jook (congee) definitely brings me back to when i was a little little girl. my mom would make it every time i got sick, and now everytime i eat it, it reminds me of my mom’s love and care. :)

Ahhh yes bagels! I can’t believe you ate 6 in one sitting as a kid! I definitely could have done that, but my mom would have ripped the bag out of my hands before I got a chance haha. Looks like a cute Mexican place, I enjoy Mexican food, but I have bad memories eating at Mexican restaurants during ED, so it kind of makes me uncomfortable. Silly, I know! Have a great Sunday!

For me, anything Mediterranean invokes some pretty strong memories. And my dad’s gorgeous paella, with seafood and dotted with green peas…just like childhood.

I was a scrawny kid who could pack it away–I think the most I ever ate was one trip to Austria and I ate like, an entire cow leg at the age of six. Thumbs up.

BOTH of those dishes look delicious, but I’m especially a fan of yours. Jalapeno-Cilantro Pesto Sauce sounds right up my alley! I should try to make some of my own!

I have no idea what the most food I’ve ever eaten in what sitting is. Probably a HUGE bag of bulk candy. I could probably chow down on 2 lbs in no time.

A food that evokes memories is probably red curry. It’s Stephen and I’s dish and we discovered it together.

I can’t believe you ate six bagels in one sitting. That is just so many carbs. I am so impressed. Did you put anything ON the bagels? I think my problem is that I only really like bagels with peanut butter. And six of those. Would be SO filling.

That mexican food looks fantabulous! I’m loving that cilantro pesto sauce…I’m going to try to make it.

The most food I’ve ever eaten…after my first fourteen mile run. I polished off six rolls of sushi. Yup that’s right. Six. And they were fantastic.

So I left a link to my You are What You Cook submission on your post about it but should I email it to you instead?

“bastardized Chinese food” <– haha, I agree. For school, I had to research authentic Chinese food vs. American-Chinese food and everyone was surprised to find out they were totally different. (I know you're Korean BTW ;) )

And no shame in finishing your plate- I would have cleared mine too! I really want to enter the "You are what you cook" contest so I better pull something creative out of my ass by dinner!

Bastardized Chinese food… that’s awesome. But once you think about it… alot of those cafeterias are just “bastardized food” in general. When an eyebrow raises when you look at it, you know it’s time to walk away! ha ha

If you’re hungry, by all means finish that plate! I did it somehow yesterday and couldn’t believe it! But yeah, your meal looks delish! mmm….

Chyeaaaaah I guessed right *victory dance*. But for realzies, I think trampoline sounds wayyyy more fun that the beam. Just sayin’.

LOL at “bastardized Chinese food”. That’s great.

I have similar feelings about Mexican food. I hate it at a lot of places because it’s all the same, it looks like an elementary school cafeteria lunch, and it’s just all flavorless. However, once in a blue moon, you find bomb-tastic Mexican eats that are authetic, fresh, colorful, and delicious (think Rick Bayless). I like to enjoy those dish, coincidently, with a Blue Moon!

Tori March 7, 2010 at 6:57 am

I’m not really one for Mexican food either. Unless you count Taco Bell…..I know beans are a big thing in Mexican dishes, and I’ve never liked beans. I can’t remember the most I’ve ate in one sitting. It was probably during a summer in highschool when I would watch T.V. with a big bag of chips by my side. Healthy, I know!

A food that always conjures memories for me is bagels with cream cheese and lox (smoked salmon). I’ve loved these since I was little. There was a bagel shop near my grandmother’s house that had a clock with bagels on it in place of numbers, and the BEST white fish salad and blueberry cream cheese – so good.

The Mexican place looks awesome. I love crab enchiladas, so I bet they were super delish. I miss Mexican, so good thing we are cooking some up tonight. Actually from the Rick Bayless cookbook, and I see someone commented about him in the comment above. Now I can’t wait for my dinner. I may even end up using surimi which I do have on hand at home. Nope, no fresh crab laying around here. Maybe I could wander down to the ocean…hmmmm….

Hot dang, Sophia- I want that Early Califnoria enchilada. I could finish that no problem- people assume becauseI am small, I have a small appetite. I am pretty sure that I can outeat my 6ft brother easily. Um…most I have eaten in one situation? Probably several platefuls of Chinese food at a buffet. Though it’s not uncommon for me to eat several pounds of roasted vegetables in a day. “Leftovers” isn’t a concept I understand. Not entirely convinced that this is a good thing :P

Haha, okay, i’m back again! Like, I mentioned in my previous comment, I snuck a peak at these answers before I commented on your Liar Liar post. Don’t you worry, I’ll try to make this comment shorter! How cute! You had to dress up as a duck! =) But I am sad to read that you don’t like chocolate flavored stuff because I love chocolate flavored stuff! =) For example, like i mentioned before, I think I was eating broccoli with nutella. ^.^ Ouch on your almost drowning in the baby pool. But at least you’re fine now! And probably learned never to do that anymore. =) hehe.

I figured your gauging of items to supersized fries not too weird. I do that with car gas sometimes. I would think to myself, “i could buy like maybe 10 gallons of gas with this cost of this sweater.” ^.^ I was also thinking that your number 5 might have been false. But I didn’t want to totally claim that to be false so fast since i was thinking well, i don’t want to say that she is totally untalented so there could be some truth in that. But then again, I am a pretty gullible person. I easily trust people, which is what gets me in trouble sometimes or should i say. A LOT of times. ^.^ Hehe, i figured it’s possible for you to down 6 of those bagels, since you mentioned in email that you bought a lot of cheese bagels. ^.^ And man, i wish i was a deep-sleeper like you! Well, i semi-am i think. haha fried food thursday! Man i keep wanting to say fried food friday!

I too like your definition of “bastardized chinese food”. I haven’t had that in a while either. I actually don’t relaly like it. ^.^ Actually, i don’t think i ever really liked sweet and sour stuff, especially those panda-express type of sweet and sour. But I think i somehow used to really like the broccoli beef! Or Tofu beef! Are you able to make a meaner, leaner version of those too? hehe

I guess for me my inspiration for recipes is to check out what combinations/ratios people use in their recipes. Sometimes the ratios to me aren’t too important unless it’s like making a sauce or baking. Well, i guess that’s not really an inspiration. but yeah. haha

I too think the fish tank is cool! Maybe it’s cuz i like fish! I used to have an aquarium set up in my house! But the fish has long since passed away. And I haven’t had time to set up a new one. ^.^ The crab meat enchilada looks really good actually. =) haha, i don’t think i would have finished the meal either. Maybe that is my ED thoughts again. Sometimes, I know I CAN finish it. But I don’t like the super stuffed feeling. So, I might purposely NOT finish it even though I am not super full. But at the same time i’m not hungry either. But I mean, it’ll depend. i mean, if i skipped breakfast. then I’d down it all. But the thing is usually i down hekka stuff for breakfast. Again, maybe that’s my ED again. I somehow got used to making breakfast my biggest meal of the day. ^.^ Oh, btw did they give unlimited chips ? Man, every time I read the restaurant name El Cholo, I keep reading El Chobo. ^.^ Where I learned from playing starcraft, chobo = n00b, in korean.

Hmm, “What is one food (or several) that instigates memories, traditions, emotions, etc. for you? And what is the most you’ve ever eaten in one seating? ”

This is a simple yet deep question. I guess it would have to be Tofu Beef over rice, Chinese turnip cakes (Luo Buo Gao), and Baked Ox-Tongue over rice. I think these foods all give me memories of my childhood. They were like all my favorites when I was young. When i was young like elementary/middle school age. used to go out to eat every weekend after church with my grandfather. And I would almost always order like the Tofu Beef over Rice. I would like it so much, that my grandfather who of course loved me, would be automatic be like oh order Tofu Beef over Rice for Jon! =) And then whenever we went to dimsum. I ALWAYS had to have the Luo Buo Gao!

And then my grandfather used to like to eat this beef-tongue over rice at this restaurant in SF: http://www.yelp.com/biz/uncles-cafe-san-francisco He would order a plate of it and give me a small portion of it (this was when i was like in elementary school). Ah, the memories. So, I guess you could say these foods remind me of the past with my grandfather. Maybe one day i am gonna go back there and try it again. But I’m sure it’s probably totally different from before now. since that was like virtually two decades ago. haha. But that is how i formed of a love eating beef tongue.

But recently have been avoiding it, as it has become one of my ‘fear foods’. One day i’ll go back to it, one day. What is the most i’ve eaten? hmm, hard to tell. I can’t picture myself pigging out anymore. haha. But i think at buffet, i used to be able to have two completely full plates of protein based foods only (since carbs are cheap fillers in buffets, i mean who wants to waste stomach space with plain rice, fried rice or noodles that you can have anywhere). And then finish it up with like a whole plate of sushi. And then down some desserts. now i just want to throw up if i try to imagine myself trying to stuff myself like that. But since you asked that was PIG version of me! ^.^

ah, *raises arm* success!! much shorter comment here than my previous comment! lol. anyway have a great sunday! =-) almost church time for me. Take care and God bless~ ^.^

Yay, I guessed the lie! Muahahahahaha :)

Quiche gives me great memories of my dad :) He used to make it. It was one of his only dishes. Hehe.

The most I’ve eaten in one sitting? Gosh… I’ve eaten entire pizzas on a few occasions. And I go a little nuts at brunches. Not sure what was the most though!

LOL totally misread it last time, I totally thought it was 6 lies!! At least I didn’t pick the ONE lie as the only truth – that would’ve been sad!

Froment crepes remind me of France when our neighbors would come over (they were from Britanny where those crepes are from) and my dad and the neighbor dad would make lots of them for everyone and we would make them canadian by adding maple syrup ;)

um- I was totally obsessed with bagels during my freshman year in college! The dinning commons kind of scared me so I ate them every day! What a great/fun mexican dinner! I am SERIOUSLY craving some veggie fajitas. I want to go out to Mexican next weekend, I need to work on convincing the husband ;)

Amazing how us petite girls can polish off loads of food. People are always amazed with how much I can eat. I am a fan of mexican food, but I choose how I eat it wisely. Too much salt and carbs & this gal is a disaster! I mainly dig a huge piece of fish with loads of veggies, guac and salsa. Gave up chips a long time ago and don’t miss ‘em. Love all the sauces & flavors.
Not sure why you had trouble getting on my blog earlier….pls let me know if you keep having issues :)
Would have been fun to hang with you at the egg farm…..they only chose moms if that makes you feel any better.
