Yummy Firsts

February 18, 2010

In all things in life, there is a always a First. Your first cry, when you were first yanked so rudely out from your mother’s womb. Your first word “mama”, sending your father into a jealous fit. Your first walk, sending both your parents to rush for the camera.

I remember my first time riding a bike. I was about 6, and my dad decided that it was time for me to ride the “grown-up” bike. He removed the back-wheels from my tricycle, and took me to the park. I was reluctant to ride the scarier, wobbly-looking bike—how the hell do you balance in two skinny wheels? But my dad was insistent that I learn to bike in two wheels. “The first time is always scary,” he told me. “But once you learn, biking will become second nature to you.”

So I got on the bike, but not without my dad’s help. He held on to the back of my seat to keep me steady while I cycled. Since my legs were so tiny, I couldn’t bike fast, and my dad jogged along behind me. Or so I thought.

I merrily cycled along, brave and confident that my dad was right behind me, keeping me steady. After a few minutes, however, I sensed something was wrong. It was way too quiet; I could no longer feel my dad’s presence. I turned around, and I saw my dad a long way away, waving at me with a big goofy smile.

”DADDY!!” I screamed in fury, and promptly lost all control over my bike and crashed into a tree. And that is how I got my first bike scrape.

My dad may have tricked me into trying my first bike ride, but he was right. Biking is now second nature to me. So is swimming. And roller-blading. And cartwheels. And a whole lot of other things…all of which started with a First.

The strange thing is, despite evidences of so many positive outcomes from Firsts, the older we get, the more hesitant we are towards trying something new. It’s sad. We seem to have lost that childlike wonder and curiosity towards unknown things. Why? Perhaps we are already comfortable with where we are. Perhaps we know too much, and curiosity has been replaced with fear. Perhaps we just simply don’t have the time and energy anymore. Whatever the reason, I want to recover back that innocent delight in Firsts.

Actually, I was kind of forced into that because of my recovery from my eating disorder. During my ED days, I became a creature of habit: I had my own little daily routine, my own strict rules of things I could and could not eat. That lifestyle made me safe, and I was comfortable in predictable meals and behaviors. But it also restricted and enchained me into a life not worth living.

When I was finally ready to recover, I had to experience a lot of Firsts. It was like I was a baby again: my first proper solid meal. My first social meal out. My first carby dinner. My first dessert. My first day without exercise. My first day without calorie-counting. My first highest weight in 4 years.

Yes, the first time is always scary. It is uncomfortable, awkward, and sometimes, downright unpleasant. But it is also rewarding. Once the First is over, and you get to the second, the third, and the fourth…it just gets easier and easier, as my dad said the first time I rode my bike.

And the thing is, Firsts doesn’t always have to be a bad experience. It all depends on how we decide to view and face them. We can turn any positive thing into something negative if we view it with trepidation and doubt. Or…we could bring out that inner child in us, and view it with curiosity, imagination, and delight. It’s your choice. Personally, I’d rather do it the painless way, and turn any Firsts into an adventure. That was one of the “tactic” I used in my recovery. Who says recovery can’t be enjoyable at times?

I mentioned recovery because I know that roughly half my readers are struggling (or have struggled) with eating disorders. But obviously, it’s just a limited example of all the Firsts you can experience in your lifetime. One of my favorite bloggers, Christina (who you should follow if you aren’t already doing so!), have just started a new blogging event called Friday Firsts to celebrate all the food-related Firsts you may have.

Christina and I must be separated twins at birth. Doesn’t matter that she’s white and I’m Asian, I’m pretty sure we’re long-lost sisters, because we seem to have a lot of common ideas, one of which is about celebrating Firsts. After my post about trying a new ingredient, Christina revealed to me an idea she’s been entertaining: building a weekly post linking to all the Foodie Firsts bloggers might have during the week.

Um, is that brilliant, or what? To participate, just stop by Dinner at Christina’s every Friday to add your own First. You can also view other people’s Firsts, and get new inspirations and ideas. We all know the blogging trends…but come on, there comes a time when I’m just tired of seeing the same meals over and over. Time to shake things up a bit! ;-)

So, allow me to be the first participant, Christina. Let me introduce my first of the week.

After church service, my church friends and I decided to eat out. Of course, they turned to me for recommendations, since I’m known as the pig foodie. I immediately suggested Mo-Chica, a highly-rated Peruvian restaurant. It is located in a Mercado La Paloma, a Latin marketplace right across USC.

Unfortunately, it was closed. But there were several other food stalls that were open, so we decided to stick to our plans and eat at Mercado La Paloma.
IMG_2697 Mercado La Paloma looks kind of sketchy. It looks like a food court stuffed into a basement. But I loved it. Very interesting place that sold not only food, but art, trinkets, and baked goods. It even had a live performance band, albeit Latin songs which I didn’t understand.
IMG_2696 Here’s the downer: I arrived about 10 minutes later than my church friends, and by the time I reached Mercado La Paloma, my friends had already ordered. And what did they order?
IMG_2699Pad Thai and fried rice. They ordered Thai food. In a Latin marketplace. What…the…heck? We’re surrounded by all these amazing authentic Latin food stalls, and you order Pad Thai from the one lone Thai place?
IMG_2703Look at that sad, confused face.

To be fair, all the other Latin food stalls had no translations at all, so my friends were wary of ordering something they did not know. They stuck to something tried-and-true, which was Pad Thai and fried rice. But as much I like Thai food, I wanted something more adventurous, and I sure as hell was not gonna order green curry in a Latin marketplace! I ventured around, and spotted this little place:
IMG_2698Chichen-Itza…I’ve heard the name before somewhere and I was positive it got pretty good reviews. It sells authentic Yucatecan cuisine, which is a Southeast Mexican cuisine, a mix of Mayan, Spanish & Lebanese recipes (had to google this when I got back home). Again, they had no translations, and I’m not well-versed with real Mexican cuisine (burritos don’t count).

But they did have pictures, and I saw a dish that had pumpkin seeds and some kind of creamy sauce over something that looked like crepes. Crepes? Pumpkin seeds? Creamy sauce? I’m in!

Turns out, it is a dish called Papadzules:
IMG_2704 Basically, Yucatecan-style Enchiladas: four corn tortillas with creamy pumpkin seed and epazote sauce, stuffed with crumbled hard-boiled egg, and topped with some kind of salsa.
IMG_2705 This artfully-prepared dish was just about $8. And it looks like fine-fare cuisine! What a bargain, and what envious expressions on my friends’ faces as I laid my dish amidst their Pad Thais!

It came with some kind of weird salt, too:
IMG_2701 I have no idea what that red stuff is. I shook it out onto my hand and nibbled at it, but it had no taste at all. Perhaps just for prettiness?
IMG_2706 But my dish? Oh. So. Gorgeously. Delicious! The creamy pumpkin seed sauce was mellow, yet with a distinctly curious flavor. Together with the tangy salsa, it was a revelation!
IMG_2707 I’m not a fan of hard-boiled eggs (in fact, I detest them) but mashed with the creamy sauce, it was all moistened up, and just melted in my mouth.
IMG_2708 I totally cleaned out my plate:
IMG_2709 That’s the way, uh-huh, uh-huh! I like it! And I’ll definitely be back…not stopping at a First!

Okay, I kind of may have teased my friends a bit about ordering Thai food in a Latin marketplace. But to be honest, their food wasn’t bad:
IMG_2702 The crab fried rice my friend ordered came with a whole crab claw. Impressive! The quantity was definitely worth it, too.
IMG_2710 The Pad Thai was just okay. Not very authentic or spicy. But the price made up for it. It was huge, and my friend (who is built like a football player) could barely finish it. Heh, and their unadventurous foodie-ness aside, I adore my church friends to death. We are quite a medley:African-American, Greek, Romanian, Taiwanese, Dominican-Republican, half-black, Korean, Chinese, Mexican…and me!
IMG_2700 Oh, here’s another First for me. This handsome guy is an Engineering grad-student! Finally! An Engineering student who is not Indian! Hm. Did that come out racist? I didn’t mean it that way, I swear…

Okay, enough talk before I get myself in trouble. Just one last reminder: My Spiralizer-Slicer giveaway ends this Sunday, so be sure to enter if you’re a reader! Then, after you use it, you can post on Christina’s blog as a First! Tee hee!

Question of the day: Do you have any examples of some of your most interesting Firsts?

I think my jaw dropped when I saw how big the order of Pad Thai was in the top picture. Wow, that’s a lot of food!

Wow, those enchiladas look so beautiful and unique (and delicious, of course). You crack me up with your comment about the Indian engineering students. Keeping it real…haha.

You are so right that recovery feels very scary, like you’re a baby again, starting over and rediscovering. I remember how much I feared pizza, and then I had it for the first time in years and it was such a liberating, wonderful event. I haven’t looked back since that “first” 9 years ago! I love pizza! My recent first was this amazing sandwich that had roasted eggplant and some other things and GOAT CHEESE! I know I’ve mentioned this before, but, seriously, how did I miss goat cheese all these years? I’m in love!

You are way more adventurous than I am, and I admire your hunger for new things! It’s inspiring!

That enchilada dish looks so amazing. I think the foodie firsts is a cool idea. As for an interesting First? I can’t think of anything…a lot of the firsts were super dramatic – like my first day going to day care. Trauma! It did involve cheese puffs at least. My first day of kindergarten – trauma again. I guess one non-traumatic first was my first ballet class. I was 10 years old and the minute I put my hand on that barre, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.

Thank you so much Sophia for helping me spread the word! I’m really excited to host the FIRST of the Friday Firsts tomorrow! Thanks for your support and I agree – we must be separated twins! :P

I loved this “It looks like a food court stuffed into a basement.” it made me giggle out loud!

Your dish looks absolutely delicious! I love the boiled eggs hiding out in there. The salt looks like it has pepper bits in it? Maybe it was supposed to become infused?

I had a similar first bike riding experience, too. I remember family members running beside me in the back yard and then suddenly I noticed they weren’t there. I panicked and crashed! But I guess that’s the best way to learn!

You’re always so insightful :) I have to say that, while I definitely would have ordered Latin food, I don’t know if I would have had the nerve to go with something filled with hard boiled egg. Like you, I like my eggs RUNNY. If you say it worked, though, I trust you :)

Also, my roommate (a caucasian female) is applying to engineering grad school at the moment, and we always tease her about the fact that she can get in ANYWHERE, just because that demographic is so rare among engineering PhD candidates.

YUMMM! That dish looks like my culinary dream come true. Creamy sauce? Check. Eggs? Check. Spice? Check? Wow.

I love your approach to food. I love to try new things also. Makes life more interesting!

You just need to add my to your lunch group and you’ll be a model for the United Nations! Everything you ordered looks great. I can’t believe how far the food options at USC have come since my days down there. I am thrilled for you!

I love the idea of Friday Firsts. I need to brainstorm some ideas.

i know smoking is a bad bad thing, but my first cigarette was in one of those moments where things around made it way too poetic not too- it was a handrolled one, on a hillside, in rural france. sure, smoking is bad, but it was way too much like something out of a movie not too.

and food firsts? the first thing we ate in this house was flourless chocolate cake! mmm.

rustique February 18, 2010 at 1:04 pm

You curious little foodie! Major props for going full-Latin despite not having anyone to guide you through it–sometimes the best part of cuisine is the sheer mystery.

My first (and last) cigarette was from a young gondalier in Venice. I was wearing a red leather jacket and felt all kinds of cool even if I was fighting back not choking up a lung. My sixteen-year-old self was a little…crazy, but I have fond memories of spending that night out on the town with my friends.

Firsts can be entirely scary but entirely wonderful at the same time. Your first kiss, your first heartbreak, your first job….all of these instances are fundamental in developing our character. I can totally relate to your personal story of taking “baby” steps all over again. Sometimes in life, we have to start over to get ahead. You have made some significant strides in moving forward and have truly embraced all of these “first” time experiences once again.

Okay but seriously now, those enchiladas…..Holy AmaZIng!!!!

Your dish looks fantastic! And I can’t lie, that picture of your friend with the confused face and gigantic plate of fried rice had to be the cutest/funniest thing I’ve seen all day!

I just commented on Christina’s blog about doing Friday Firsts. It’s such a great idea!

I loved reading this post, I could relate to so many parts of what you’ve written. I can only view Firsts as an adventure – as something wonderous and new, something that needs to be experienced, otherwise I’d have too many regrets xxx

Wow, I’ve never seen Latin food like that before! I need to go down to cali to try some real authentic Mexican food. All we have here is Chipotle and Azteca :P Or maybe if I look hard enough I’ll find a place that uses pumpkin seeds as a topping.

Heeey I’m an engineering grad student who’s not Indian (but Asian nonetheless!) hehe!

Wow I love this post! The dish that you ordered looks delicious. I am going to try to recreate it. End of story. Or come visit you. So we could go back there. Or both!

Some of my firsts…well there are the ED-related ones of course…my first day of not calorie counting was on my first med school interview. It was impossible to control anything and I didn’t want my interviewers to remember as the weird girl who didn’t eat anything! So I just let loose…I even ordered dessert!

Then there are the random foodie ones…my first time eating a really weird food (chicken feet…not so terrible)…the first full fat no substitution dessert I ever made (chocolate mousse pie)…the first dinner party I ever had (lasagna!). So many good firsts.

I don’t remember learning to ride a bike (apparently I started begging my dad to teach me as soon as I could talk!), but I do remember teaching my little brother to ride a bike! He started crying every time my dad let go so my dad had me run along side the bike so Marshall didn’t feel like he was all by himself!

I had a first today! A couple of them! I made focaccia for the first time (SO AWESOME YOU’D BE PROUD!!!) and I also made tomato bisque. I swear the best meal I’ve had all week. When we meet we are going to have so many adventures–of every kind! Shopping, eating, touring, and just galavanting whatever city we take over ;) Your First sounds and looks so delicious. I love the way you described it. When I went out to eat with my dad for V-day I had him close his eyes and describe the food as if I were a person that lost their ability to taste food. Life would be very bleak without tastebuds. I hope you have a wonderful Thursday night and Friday and just FOREVER!! :D Gah I’m in such a good mood lol.

Good for you for showing your friends the way. I used to roll my eyes sometimes when my parents would travel, yet no matter where they went — be it France or the Caribbean — they’d want to hunt down a Chinese restaurant. Can you believe it? Half the fun about being in a different land is experiencing the food there.

That First idea is fantastic! I honestly don’t remember the last time I did something for the FIRST time. Well, I had cereal with (almond) milk for the first time after YEARS of only eating it dry. Maybe that sort of counts.. it’s so good. I mean, dry cereal is good but I can’t believe that I stopped eating the two together.

Looks like you’ve discovered a real gem of a foodie-place. The meals look HUGE and for those prices? And the taste? It’s not often one discovers such greatness. I hope you go back soon because I would love to see more of the eats from there!

When I was learning to ride a bike, I crashed into not only a fire hydrant, but also my mom’s rose bushes. Thankfully learning to drive a car went much smoother.

It’s funny you don’t like hard-boiled eggs when you love runny eggs. To me, an egg is just kind of an egg either way, and I like them! Anyway, I haven’t had too many food “firsts” lately, but I would like to. Sounds like a good weekend goal.

I can just imagine you at age six, riding a bike for the first time, without training wheels. It’s a wonderful picture in my mind! I can actually remember, very clearly, the first time I rode a bike. I was actually 3. What the heck?! My parents probably thought I was amazing, but it turns out I’m not much of an athlete, I just have good coordination I guess.

I love the idea of “foodies’ firsts”…my first experience with lobster was last weekend! It was easy as pie, I couldn’t believe it. Getting it out of the shell, well that was another story.
