Sigh. I’m a bad blogger. A few wonderful people have passed me some awards, but I’ve been neglecting to play along because my posts are always rather long, so I find myself running out of space to squeeze in more information about myself when I’ve already been yabbering away about myself for several paragraphs. In fact, I also kind of forgot who my awarders were as well, so if you could please speak up…hee. Sorry, my friends.
Well Kristen from EatingRD recently passed me two awards, and I decided it was time to stop procrastinating and finally post them on my blog. So I shall deviate away from my usual long post about me, me, me to write another long post about…me. Woo-hoo!
Okay, time to get things going! First award:
Aw, someone thinks I’m beautiful. That makes me happy. And I’m supposed to list 7 things that you may not know about me. So here goes:
- I just found out I have a wart on my foot. I saw a doctor this afternoon, and she cut the dead skin away and put liquid nitrogen on it. Mega-cool.
- I once wanted to be the President of the United States. Thank goodness for the dear Americans that only natural citizens are allowed to be president.
- My real name is So Hyun (Korean), except no non-Koreans can pronounce it, so I go by Sophia (it means wisdom!)
- In Singapore, my nickname was Soap, because I hated the way my friends pronounced my name “so-FIA” in two harsh-sounding syllables instead of the more melodious “so-FI-A”. Since they were too lazy to say the extra syllable, my friends decided to stick to one simple syllable: Soap.
- I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Don’t mess with me.
- I adore cute Asiany stuff like pretty stationary, adorable plush toys, etc. I have an entire collection of notebooks and pens and miscellaneous utensils with a cow character on it.
- I listen to the whole Grinch song every single day. I also watched “The Grinch” (with Jim Carrey) about 573 times.
10 Things that make me Happy:
- Listening to hymns: Nothing like a beautiful song that reminds me of all the Goodness of God.
- A prayer answered: big or small, powerful or subtle, they just light me up with fresh faith!
- Hugging my parents: I think no matter how fat and old I may become, I’ll always feel small and babied in my parents’ arms.
- Creating and cooking a new recipe: Love that first bite and reconfirming my ingenuity!
- Receiving mail: big fat packages, cards, and especially long, hand-written letters. Emails are just not the same!
- First cup of coffee in the morning: Fresh-brewed, no instant please.
- Checking things off my To-Do List: Ah, that empowering sense of productivity…
- My 7pm Rule: Because it just rocks and gives me the excuse to read blogs and just chill. I’ve never broken it, ever.
- Good, sunny weather: I’ve been too pampered by SoCal weather. I don’t think I can live in rainy and under 60-degree weather anymore. My heart goes out to the penguins.
- My daily poop. Oh so refreshing. Cathartic, even.
Thanks for reading. That was actually really fun! I’m probably one of the last bloggers to post these, and so most of you have received these awards already. But if you haven’t, consider yourself tagged!
Actually, there are a lot more I could mention about things that make me happy, just little obvious moments of joy that keep me sane amid even the most stressful days. I loved listing happy things because it reminds me that I have so many things to be happy about: Friends, church, good food, eating out…Preferably all of them together, but sometimes, things just can’t be that perfect.
I recently hung out with my friends after church, and we decided to eat lunch out at La Taquiza together. La Taquiza is this famous hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant in the vicinity of USC. It’s not just popular among USC students; apparenly plenty of Los Angelenos will make a trip downtown just to eat their “fabulous” tacos and mulitas.
Good friends? Check. Great service at church? Check. Eating out? Check. Good food? Eh, not so much…
La Taquiza actually showed so much promise. I wasn’t feeling like Mexican food that afternoon, but seeing these started to make me excited to try their food:
A huge mound of fresh tortilla dough, ready to be made into tacos by order:
A fresh salsa bar:
And Al Pastor off the spit, spinning and roasting in its own juices…
Not to mention the clean, colorful, and ecelctic interior design: ![]()
I really thought I was gonna have a show-stopping meal. Perhaps I expected too much, because my order turned out pretty disappointing. I ordered three tacos:
The first two were the famous Al Pastor and pollo (chicken).
And third one was the more expensive salmon:
First of all, the portion was much smaller than I thought it would be. Dang, I didn’t think tacos are supposed to be the size of your palm. Or maybe I’m just too used to Big Mac sizes? Either way, I was ticked off at the size of my tacos.
I tried to make up the small portions by piling on the free salsas and pickles and onions: ![]()
Unfortunately, the Al Pastor and pollo were both nicely seasoned, but extremely dry and tough. Boo!! I’m not a meat-lover from the start, and dry meat just turns me off. But because the sizes were so small, I still had to finish them all in order to feel satisfied.
The salmon was the opposite problem. It wasn’t dry at all, but really wet…and greasy. The guacamole on top was rather bland, too.
Most of my friends ordered one mulita:
This is basically a taco sandwich: two tortillas, encasing some kind of meat and guacamole and cheese.
They also had a shrimp one:
Can you see it peeking out? And another ordered the fried fish:
My friends weren’t particularly bowled over either. All in all, none of us could see what the hype over La Taquiza was about. Considering the small portions, the prices weren’t that cheap, either.
I totally had to have a snack when I got home. Thankfully, I also happened to receive some sample products through the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program from Special K:
A new (low fat) granola, and a packet of Fruit Crisp
First, the granola. I’m not much of a fan of granola actually, but this one was actually pretty tasty. It was crunchy, slightly sweet, and hearty.
(Please excuse my gross bandage. I cut myself)
However, the ingredients weren’t as pleasing. The first ingredient listed was whole grain oats. So far, so good. The second ingredient listed was sugar, and then corn syrup. Uh…This isn’t exactly so healthy after all.
Now, I’m all for indulgence and snacks, and I believe having a bit of sugar and corn syrup isn’t a horrible thing. But if you’re gonna market yourself as a “healthy” product, and encourage people to eat your products as a “balanced and healthy” meal, sugar and corn syrup shouldn’t be in the top three listed ingredients!
Next, the fruit crisps:
Now, these aren’t marketed as a meal, or a healthy product, so I’ll give it much more leeway.
Actually, I think they make a pretty damn good snack. They’re light, and slightly crisp, perfectly portioned into 100-calorie packets. They are a bit sweeter than I would have liked, but they do the job of satisfying your sweet cravings. The inside is some kind of strawberry filling, but they also have blueberry ones available.
Overall, they taste like skinny pop tarts. I approve.
But what is with the bland packaging?
I suppose it’s just because they are samples?
I think the new Special K products taste good, but they’re definitely not a well-balanced or extremely healthy meal. I’d rather enjoy them as a light snack that won’t weigh me down, and have a more hearty and nutritious meal. But my roommate loves the granola a lot. She practically helped me polish off half the bag, both as breakfast and as a light supper. I guess that Special K granola is still a better option than Coco Puffs.
Question of the day: What is one thing about you I (and other bloggers) may not know? What is one thing that makes you happy?
P.S. As if the two above memes aren’t enough, check out Sean’s interview of me here!

I had those types of tacos in Mexico….amazing. Taco Bell can not even compare
I didn’t know you had a black belt!!! COOL! I took karate when I was little but only because my brother did and I wanted to be like him hehe.
you have a black belt!!!!!!
Nothing makes my happier than fresh tortillas!
Can you believe my mom would make them fresh every morning! I miss that…
I gave you both of those awards, too!! You’re one special lady.
Those are the size of “authentic” tacos – hehe you’re just biased to huge portion sizes. They look good, sorry they didn’t taste too good. I also dislike dry meat a LOT. Once it’s overcooked nothing can save it for me!
I like you referring to the special k bar as “a skinny poptart” hehe
Hmmm one thing you might not know about me? I feel like I’ve told so much the past few weeks winning all of these awards. Hmm.. um I’ve never gotten a ticket ever!
oh man, LA mexican food! I have only been to LA once, but that is the best Mexican food I have ever had! Super jealous =)
Congrats on the awards, you certainly deserved them. Loved all the photos for the SoCal Tacqueria – they are indeed special places!
thanks. your comment meant a lot! hah! ripped abs! I WISH! =D
anyways, i’m prety busy right now- english is a 6 week intensive. but it finishes feb 6- and my next quarter doesn’t start til the 16th. any time around there should be fine.
congrats on the awards! coz you rock OF COURSE.
hmm. something you don’t know about me:i have this uncanny ability to find lost things. like contacts, keys. etc. it’s kinda weird.
Kudos to you on your awards, Sofia (she said softly:) You sure do have some “resume” there. I think I like these kinds of awards best. They give others an opportunity to see another side of their favorite bloggers. The first cup of freshly perked coffee is a must for me too!
The food looks pretty darn good in the pics. It must me your photo talent oozing through. I’m sure the eclectic surroundings had something to do with the expense. I’m sure you had fun with friends and that’s all that really matters, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing…
I don’t really like Mexican food, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a taco the size of your palm! I guess we’re accustomed to oversized American portions…
I also love receiving snail mail! It’s so much more personal than an email or even a typed letter. :]
One obscure thing about me… erm, I eat a piece of chocolate every day after breakfast. I mean, who can wait until dinner?!
hahaha YES! My daily poop is definitely a highlight too! Fun fact about me is that I am fluent in Swedish, which is possibly the most useless language to know…
Too bad the tacos weren’t so great. It did look like it was going to be good! My kitties make me very happy and something not many people may know is that I’m a huge fan of the Rolling Stones.
cool action pic of the lady in the restaurant! and fun facts about yourself, “soap” is a great nickname
i wish i got to try those special k poptart things, they look yummy
Congrats on the awards! Black belt in Tae Kwon Do?!! Wow! Good to know; I’ll behave if we ever meet in person…
The tacos look amazing; sorry they didn’t taste as good as they look! A good friend of mine first introduced me to real Mexican tacos many, many years ago, and I remember that I was a bit surprised by how small they were. But hers are delicious & juicy… In fact, thinking of them makes me realize that I’m hungry right now…
I love your lists! Everything from cutesy asian stuff to your comment bout being president/natural citizens LOL!!! and your coffee. I am also in shock (pleasantly!) bout the 7p rule. WOW. In undergrad esepecially this was ALWAYS broken for me. Actually, I lived to study, sadly. Wish I woulda done alot more blowing off lame stuff and had my own 7pm rule. You girls these days are way smarter than I was
Thanks for your contest entries
Congrats on the awards!
I’m surprised a nice poop didn’t make it close to the top– it would have topped mine! hahah
Love your blog!
You’re a black belt? Whoaaaa look out!
That mexican food looks amazing by the way!! How I love me some mexican food
I think I remember that restaurant from my USC days! It looks great, sorry it wasn’t!
I am so impressed that you are a black belt. How awesome is that?? And I would have never thought you’d be into the cute Asian stuff…you should come over and check out Maya’s collection of Hello Kitty. She’d love it!
Congrats on the award! And the perfect way to celebrate with some mighty fine al pastor. Yum!
What’s one thing that makes me happy? An afternoon at the spa for a deep-tissue massage. I can’t splurge on it very often, maybe only once or twice a year. But boy, is it something special. I feel totally relaxed, totally refreshed, totally reborn.
aw lame tacos suck!
those look like taco truck style, so those are usually not so big… but where i grew up they only cost 75 cents to 1.25 per taco. 4 = very full belly, and 5 bucks max. my favorite place made chicken with lots of lime and cilantro, and cabbage on top. mmm.
haha…I’ve been on a taco binge lately. I love a good taco, but not dry ones. What makes me happy is being around people and spending some time alone writing.
Thanks for commenting on my blog, I do love colorful oaties.
I just read your sanity tips for college, nice list! Has it been easy to stick with it?
One thing people don’t know about me… I’m getting more and more messy lately… ahh!!
One thing that makes me happy… my loving husband, family and animals
Aww what a shame about the tacos-they showed such promise! They look much more filled than how we get them here. I’m afraid that if you ever come here you’ll spend half the time looking for the rest of the filling in your sandwiches and tacos!
Hahah this is why I love reading your blog- you’re not afraid to talk about your warts and poop
One thing that makes me happy: my family. Not living at home makes you appreciate them a little more
i love authentic taco joints like this. that looks awesome~ the tortillas alone would satisfy me!! so yum. sophia~ you would make an awesome president!
oh and i meant to say sorry you didn’t dig it all that much. BUT the ones like that in SLC are super yum. come here
Thank you so incredibly much for your caring comment. Your kindness meant so much to me, you have no idea! I wish there was some way I could express it to you, but my computer screen would possibly explode from gratefulness, and we don’t want that!
to daily poops. You’re funny, girl! A random fact about me? When I was 18ish a freak accident (I’m convinced it was fate) involving hair conditioner let me rocking Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta status hair… or lack of.
I loved reading your lists. I was giggling the whole time, from your soapy nickname
Rachael*
thank you for your comment on my blog, love
honestly, i am finding it hard to find hope…
i feel so ashamed for “leaving” my ed..
coffee. fresh brewed defs makes my morning
and no, i would NOT take your coffee.. knowing you have a black belt! eeek!!
Congrats on the awards! You have a black belt and you like cute stuff?? hehe…very extreme.
LOVE the mex food! Looks so so good!
I agree, special k products may taste good, but they use a LOT of HFCS!
One thing you don’t know about meeeeee……….
I started eating oatmeal everyday in 6th grade!
Love the real tacos! Anything mex really;) Have a great weekend lovely girl! xxx Julia (Taste of Living)
Those special-k snacks are screaming out to be crumbled into yogurt
Look pretty awesome to me. Granola…not so much. Though I have never had a low-fat granola that tastes good to me so maybe that’s why (Bear Naked, all the way!)
Um, something people don’t know about me…I am a terrible cook. Like, really REALLY bad.
LOVE the Sean interview..you just crack me up. My entire opinion of you changed for a second when you wrote Sandra Lee..hee hee you got me. I love Anthony as well, I tell me husband that hes the only man I would leave him for. Thats the one thing you didnt know about me!!!!
So sorry your tacos were disappointing. Congrats on your awards. Thanks for sharing all the fun things about yourself we didn’t know. As for me, spending time with my husband makes me happy (still newly weds) and living near the ocean makes me happy. One thing you may not know about me is that I went to an awesome summer camp in upstate NY from the time I was 11 until I was 18 and I worked there.
Hey Sophia! Way to go with the award. I also read the interview that you had. It’s always nice to get to know you a little better. ♥ And wow, black belt? I’ll be sure not to mess with you. (^_^) I also thought it was rather humorous that your name was Soap. Heheheh. Cute. Anywho! Till next time!
Fresh tortillas?! That sounds incredible, I can’t even imagine. Things that make me happy are my family and friends. And writing and blogging – totally cleanses me.
Aw, D’s little sister is Sophia too, and yep, we call her Soap! Too bad those tacos were disappointing–I was all excited! Glad to know some more about you. Now I can love ya even more
xoxo
Sorry to hear the tacos sucked…it’s always so disappointing when your food isn’t as good as you’d hoped. My bed makes me happy. (I’m thinking about it because I’m typing from there:)
i love learning things about people like this in their blogs! and i saw those special k products in the store yesterday so i’m glad you reviewed them because i wasn’t sure if they’d be good or not. thanks
I agree about hugging my parents — it’s always comforting to know that no matter how old I get, I’ll always be their little girl.
Sorry the Mexican place was a bust… I find that most restaurants are a hit or miss. I love cute Asian things too! My favorite character since I was very young has been Pochacco
Loved reading your little factoids, especially the things that make you happy. I am with you on soo many of them, forrealzzz. And #10 made me laugh and spit out a little of my oatmeal!
It’s hard thinking of interesting stuff about yourself! But here’s one thing that makes me happy: Going to a bookstore, picking out a random book, and spending the afternoon reading with a cup of joe!
“# My daily poop. Oh so refreshing. Cathartic, even.”
Um, I love you?!! Me tooo. Who doesn’t?! And if this doesn’t happen.. what can I say? I then become a moody, irritable grouch.
Love your lists even though its all about you you you. I constantly wonder if I’m writing too much about myself, my opinions, pictures of myself and whatnot- but we’re bloggers. We’re writing about our lives. And people continue to read? What ELSE are we supposed to be writing about? This constantly gets to me on a daily basis.
I’m so sad the restaurant wasn’t good! It sucks when you have really high hopes too, or if it is like acclaimed, and it turns out to be crap. FAIL.
Sophia you are a beautiful girl fo sho!
black belt?! I remember my dad made me do taekwondo when I was five and I quit at a white belt! haha I regret quitting though cause I’m not as cool as you!
You cracked me up. So true about the daily poop. One thing about me I nicknamed my boss ‘processed food’. One thing i am truly grateful for – families (parents, siblings, their children, my pediatrician sis-in-law, my own small fam of 3). One thing i’d like to do has been to earn a back belt in anything. I just started reading blogs, found yrs and you rock!
I love learning more about you! You can NEVER talk to much about yourself LOL
Hmm? Something you and other bloggers don’t know about me? Everything – since I don’t have a blog LOL I guess I’ll start small – My mommy is my best friend and I share EVERYTHING with her!
Something that makes me happy? Listening to my family (particularly my stepdad and brother) laugh – they have such loud hearty laughs and seeing them so happy just thrill me!
Nicole G
I had a wart on my foot once
I had to get it frozen off too. It was no big deal
One thing people may not know: I can jump into water from very high heights without my head going under. I have no idea why. It’s been like that since I was a kid.
One thing that makes me happy: Giving my cats some love.
Have a good weekend
HaHa. I can’t believe you posted number 10 on things that make you happy! True though…
LOL I loved your “daily poop”….sooooo true! And something that most people would definitely not admit. But everyone feels the same way
Myself included.
Something else that makes me happy? A good hair day. I’ll be vain and admit it. It changes the whole day!
I am lovin’ the neon green wall in that restaurant!
I am a fan of the Special K granola – it is the granola that I overcame my granola fear with; I hope to branch out soon, however! Also, the strawberry fruit crisps taste amazing with some dark chocolate peanut butter spread between them (:
One thing you/other bloggers don’t know about me: I have to put lotion on my feet before I put shoes on; apparently I’ve done this ever since I learned to put my shoes on by myself.
One thing that makes me happy: Hearing my younger sister talk about her high school life/drama/experiences. She is truly living and enjoying life and it makes me happy. I just love hearing her talk about her life.
I loved your lists (: I am also a huge fan of the Grinch! + your sanity tips are quite helpful! Hope you’re having a great day! -Kylee
Oh my gosshhhh that looks SO GOOD! Fresh salsa and tortillas? Count me in! Congrats on the awards!
<3 jess
