in eating out,My story

Remember when I questioned God why the heck He would design us human beings to require sleep, here on this post? I’m surprised it took so long for me to get it. But I’ve finally found out the answer. The answer is that sleep isn’t just a biological requirement for us humans to function properly. It’s a gift from God.

After this winter break, I’ve discovered the true function of sleep. Our daily lives are like a school semester. We work, we study, we think, we debate, we hang out, we play. But by the end of the semester, we’re just burned out, and we’re sick of school, sick of all the constant activities. But thankfully, we’re granted a break just before we go crazy. During that break, we actually get to relax, because we’re free from all the stress and worries of homework, 10-page essays, and exams. If it weren’t for these occasional holidays, school will just…be intolerable, a complete hell-hole, even if the classes are fun and interesting. At some point, we just need to be able to let loose and forget about everything school-related.

Same thing with sleep. During the day (or night, if you’re a night owl, coughChristina cough ;-) ), you’re constantly laboring, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. By the end of the day, you’re probably a bit cranky. Stay up a bit longer, and you’ll probably get on somebody’s nerves. That’s when sleep comes in. Sleep temporarily transports you into a different world in which you are blissfully ignorant of the real, 3-dimensional world. You have no choice but to slow down, relax, and succumb yourself to your dreams, which you’ll probably forget when you wake up.

And when you do, you’ll be all ready for a new beginning, a new day. Your mind, body and soul has been replenished, so you wake up with refreshed energy to jump right back to your daily activities.

As I said, I only really realized this after my break, because as fast as it seemed to pass, and as burned out as I was by the end of last semester, I’m now all ready and eager to start the new semester! I think I’m taking some pretty interesting classes too. One of them will be on Global Health Issues, and another is Art: Drawing. I can’t wait to burst out of my little American bubble and learn more about global issues, and I’m so excited to rediscover my passion for art.

That said, I have one final post left to share about my eats back in the east coast. And please don’t throw your snowballs at me, but am I freaking glad to be back in sunny SoCal! I can’t help cackling wickedly to myself in my t-shirt and flip-flops, while my parents still waddle around like penguins in these attires:
IMG_1812Aaahh. God bless L.A. :D

Okay, back to chilly DC. I met up with one of my best friends, Joyce, her boyfriend Allen, and an old friend John for a last lunch together the day before I left. We went to a local restaurant called Sweet Ginger in Vienna:
IMG_2316 Sweet Ginger is a pan-Asian restaurant, mostly known for its cheap sushi and huge menu. It’s walking distance from my house, and has been around for quite awhile, but I’d never found the incentive to visit until now.

The interior is trendy, with bold, intense colors. Seems like most Asian places are sticking with modern design now.
IMG_2298Unfortunately, even though I asked for a seat with good lighting, the place was really dark, which means photography fail #1. Meanwhile, there were bright rays of direct sunlight— photography fail #2. Le sigh. With my crappy point-and-shoot camera, there wasn’t much I can do, but I tried my best to take decent pictures.

John ordered a Sweet Ginger special per my recommendation, the Sweet Ginger Pasta:
IMG_2300Red curry cream sauce chicken & Asian fettuccini pasta topped with spicy curry cream sauce and spinach, mushroom & basilIMG_2301 According to John, it was good, but the sauce was a bit more liquidy than we’d expected.
IMG_2302
Allen ordered the Chicken Panang Curry:
IMG_2305 Thai pan-cooked curried peanut sauce with herbs and spices, served over grilled chicken breast
IMG_2306 It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great, either. The portion was a bit small, especially for a steak-loving guy like Allen.

Joyce ordered the Box C Lunchbox Special:
IMG_2303 Shrimp and vegetable tempura and sushi. With Miso Soup, House Salad, Rice, California Roll, Japanese Dumpling and fried tofu.
IMG_2304 I would have ordered the lunchbox special myself, if I didn’t already have something else in mind.

I ordered the Crazy Roll:
IMG_2307
Asparagus tempura, cream cheese, crabmeat, rolled outside with avocado, salmon, tuna, and roe, and spicy sauce
IMG_2311 Holy roll!! This was one crazy roll, all right! Damn the lighting, it could have been SO beautiful if there was better and more natural lighting!
IMG_2312 But anyway, it was damn GOOD! I’m not a sushi connoisseur, so I can’t judge the freshness of the fish, or the perfect temperature and seasoning of the sushi rice, but this made one hell of a combination…a fiesta in my mouth! How do  you say “fiesta” in Japanese, anyway? Anyone?
IMG_2309 The only fault I found with this roll was that it was not filling at all. I could have easily ordered another one of these, and still have room left over.
IMG_2310 I can’t believe I haven’t had sushi in 4 years. I would foresee more sushi in the future if I wasn’t so broke. If anyone wants to treat me to sushi, give me a ring. ;-)

It’s so nice to catch up with old friends. I only allowed myself about a few minutes to stop talking and inhale my wonderful sushi. And then it was gabble time. We talked and talked about everything from school and marriage to false prophets and cults. Haha. And it was really interesting, because we are such an eclectic group, bonding over one common love: Christ. :-)
IMG_2314 John (who I haven’t seen in 2 years!) is quiet, reserved, sensitive, and incredibly helpful. Allen (the one on the right and who is about to blow his nose into a napkin) is gregarious, sincere, passionate, and easily excitable.
IMG_2315
Joyce is sweet, reflective, lovable, and dreamy. And me? I’m the slow fool who only just started to appreciate sleep and rest. ;-)

Speaking of sleep— I have not forgotten my New Year prayer topic to turn into bed before 2 am. I’m still not there yet, but I’m climbing into bed earlier and earlier each night, so yahoo to progress!

Question of the day: Non-college students are probably back to work, while we college students are getting ready to start a new semester. Either case, are you happy to be back to a normal, busy lifestyle? And what is your favorite Asian cuisine?

Oh sleep, how I love you. I’m tempted to capitalize. Mmm…Sleep. Never treasured it either until I became a snooze-deprived college student.

Can I say that I like your friends? (Is that weird to say even though I’ve never even met them? Maybe I like them even more by virtue of their association with you?) They seem like down-to-earth people – and people who love God? Hmm, my kind of folks. :)

Yes, yes I am glad to be back to school. There I said it.

I used to HATE sleeping when I was younger- thinking that I was missing out on something more fun, but now I appreciate nothing more than the thought of sleeping in my bed at the end of the day :)
Isn’t it great to come back to California when everywhere else is FREEZING! I’m sad to leave for Oregon next week where it’ll be cold n rainy :( booooo!
I’m excited to get back to school and get back to busy life since I’ve just been bumming it the past month- to see my friends, have a schedule/routine, etc. As for Asian cuisine: I love Thai and Singaporean (since it’s a fusion of Indian, Malay, & Chinese). Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmm!

Sweet Ginger Pasta sounds absolutely amazing. I just had scrambled eggs for dinner…can you tell I’m still hungry?

Sleep truly is a gift from God. Just wait until you have a screaming infant waking you up every 3 hours…you will appreciate sleep like never before!!

flip flops FO SHO!!!! hahaha glad you’re back. LA isn’t the same without my homie!

re: scallions. HOW DO YOU EAT SCALLIONS!?!??!UGHHHHH however, i concede that they do impart a nice flavor to lobster and tofu. BUT! i will NOT eat raw scallions. that shit is just too much for me. BLEH!

dumplings: there’s scallions in there? no wonder i get bad breath after that. chives and leeks have that issue with me too. and i eat dumplings doused in soy. hahahha. =D

Totally jealous of your flip flops right now! I have to strap on snow boots just to go get the mail!

Good Lord woman I wonder what you think of my pics if these are horrible fails!? I’ll admit they’re not your usual pic, but they’re still pretty darn good. Better than a lot of mine!

My favorite Asian cuisine? Well, to be honest I’m not really sure if the things I’ve eaten are TRULY Asian or just Americanized versions of things I *think* are Asian! Of Chinese food, I like lo mein the most, w/ the long noodles to slurp up. But I’d have to say if I was picking a restaurant I would choose Japanese b/c I love the whole process of it – getting the tea, the miso soup, ordering sushi, tempura items, etc. I’ve yet to try Korean, but I hope one day you’ll change that for me! ;) I’m not a huge spicy fan, but it all does look delicious from what I see on TV. OH!! And I really, really want to try those soup dumplings you’ve been lucky enough to eat!!

I think in an odd way I’m happy classes started again. Now there’s to-do lists and goals to meet, instead of just long stretches of blah. Even the dreaded law class hasn’t turned out to be SO bad. The work seemed fairly ok, I’m still waiting on the grade, though – so we’ll see if I gave the teacher what she was looking for! If so, then this semester will be a lot happier for me!

“I freaking glad to be back in sunny SoCal! I can’t help cackling wickedly to myself in my t-shirt and flip-flops, while my parents still waddle around like penguins in these attires”—OMG me too! I am in AZ (trying to get back to CA after living there 6 yrs and moving to AZ but anyway….) My fam is back in IL and MN complaining about the weather. Then move people! Like I did :)

Sushi roll looks amazing. OMG amazing.
Fave sushi roll used to be an eel roll. I have since developed a pretty severe fish and shellfish allergy (thus the vegan thang) but in my day, I could scarf down eel and eel sauce (sweet, smokey heaven in my mouth) with the best of em!

Back to normal..happy the holidays are over frankly!

Danielle (Coffee Run) January 9, 2010 at 9:48 pm

Your sushi DOES look amazing (even with the lighting)! I love creative sushi but ever since going vegan it’s been hard to find meatless rolls. I’ve tried making my own but it always ends in a big. fail.
Going back to school is bitter-sweet for me. At times it’s hectic, but it sure beats doing nothing at home :)

I love sleep. There’s just something about the comfort of being in my own bed. I’m still adjusting to going back to work. I’ve been so relaxed over the past couple of weeks. But I think it would be a good thing to get back into the grind of things. As for my fav Asian dish… That’s a bit of a toughy, I love many Asian foods. I can’t decide. But now you’ve got me craving for some sushi.

Of course the photos of the Sweet Ginger Pasta had me drooling… :) I am glad you are enjoying the wonders of sleep – this is something I need to work on too :o

You are entirely right as always my dear Sophia. We so easily get caught up in the hustle and bustle and often being to compromise the essentials, such as sleeping and resting. I am victim to this, as I am sure so many other people can relate. Then, when your body does reach the point of exhaustion, you begin to realize how grateful you are for the moments that you can sit back and unwind, even if they are few and far between. I often feel this way about 3 day weekends now. I am always so rushed and even on the weekends, that having that one extra unplanned day off means the world!!!!

Glad you are happy to be home. But I am jealous of your sun and warmth! :)

i think sleep is way understated. Our body needs to rest in order to function. That’s why a power nap should be included within a day’s work. :)

This restaurant is like my dream. I LOVE ginger!! It’s my favorite spice, other than garlic of course. My favorite Asian cusine is anything wtih shrimp, scallops, or ginger, but really I just like sushi and sesame chicken! Yeah, I know sesame chicken has no ginger, but whatever.

I am happy to be back to my busy lifestyle, because it’s not so busy that I am burned out. Plus, I’m always busy with fun work!

That crazy roll looks beautiful! Glad you got caught up with your friends. My fave Asian food is probably Thai (mmm shrimp pad thai), unless you count Indian in there. I like Chinese food, but the kind in China, not the American version. Malyasian places are good too. I used to spend a lot of time dining in China Town in las Vegas. Hard to believe but there is a china town in Vegas. Oh, and your global health issues class sounds like it will be awesome. I hope you enjoy it.

Ha, I don’t even know what my normal lifestyle is anymore!! I’m hoping to settle into this new one soon though. Hmmm, choosing a favourite Asian cuisine is tough. This is kinda random, but there is a Mongolian restaurant in my hometown that I LOVE. I would choose that place over any other!

Even with bad lighting your photos are still wonderful. I’ve always thought you had a great eye for taking beautiful food photos ;)

I love sleep even though I run on so little of it. More than you it seems haha. i am jealous of your sunny west coast status. It is SO cold here.

Your meals look delicious! That pasta sounds fabulous. I might have to recreate it (but with a less liquidy sauce).

Sushi is possibly one of my most favorite things to eat. Ever. I think I have it once a week. A lot of places around here have lunch specials that are like two rolls for 8 bucks with a soup or salad. A-MAzing. That roll looks intense. So many fabulous things on it. And the pictures are great, I don’t know WHAT you are talking about.

My favorite asian cuisine is definitely thai food though. I love the curries. Love. And the emphasis on peanut butter.

But if I have to choose: Japanese (sushi!) and Malaysian (penang assam laksa!)
