Weathered Down

December 19, 2009

in blog meet-up,eating out,family,USC

I’m back home! And I’m pretty weathered down. Literally, and figuratively. I was stuck in the middle seat of an overnight and over-packed flight back home, and I did not get a wink of sleep. I reached the Dulles airport at 6:30 am in the morning, and as soon as I got home, I crashed and slept till 4:30 in the afternoon.

Needless to say, my sleeping schedule is all messed up. Usually, I can easily fix it with some exercise and change in my eating patterns, but guess what hit the east coast…

IMG_1771 Snow
IMG_1772 …and more snow…
IMG_1773 In fact, it’s snowing even harder right now as I type.

IMG_1775 Oh, pretty white snow…You cover the earth with your gleaming crystals, pure and beautiful…

NOT!!!

Damn you, damn you, damn you, you irritating speckled fluff! I’m going crrraaazy stuck here at home! And to think Los Angeles is a balmy 70 degrees right now! Needless to say, I’ve been really restless. I’ve been strutting around the house poking my nose into my parents’ business. I think even my parents are wishing I’m in L.A. right now. >.<

Okay, fine. Being cooped up at home with nothing to do and nothing to eat isn’t the worst thing in the world. At least I’m home. I’m not basking under the SoCal sun, but I’m basking under my parents’ love.
IMG_1776 That’s my dad, preparing for Sunday’s sermon…

And my mom, nagging at me to wash my face:
IMG_1774 Here’s a couple of wonderful people who never tires of listening to me talk about me. Hee hee. Look, they even cleaned up my room:
IMG_1768 But they neglected to burn this pillow:
IMG_1770 Still, my restlessness was going to stifle me. So my dad proposed an adventure: Let’s go driving in this horrid snowstorm! What a marvelous idea!

We decided to drive to the local Korean supermarket to stock up on some groceries. Now, I was definitely perking up!
IMG_1779 That’s me, perking up. Sort of.

Well, I got to wear the new  hat my mom bought me from Korea. Fluffy and pink. Not really my style, but it’s cute! :-)
IMG_1781 And somehow, even though we inched in the pace of a roller-skating granny, we made  it to our destination!
IMG_1782 Super H Mart. Love this place. I missed it!

I got my mom to stand still for a picture:
IMG_1783 And then we went in and bought about 10 lbs of sweet potatoes. And some other stuff. I forgot.

So. While I bemoan my plight here, I’m sure many east coasters are telling me to shush up. Lord knows how much worse it is north! Brrr…

Okay. Think happy, warm thoughts…Well, there’s good food. And good friends. And warm weather. Ah yes, I believe I still have yet to share my last lunch with Mimi before we parted ways. We were supposed to meet with Kathryn for sushi, but the poor girl got hailed with a terrible stomachache, so Mimi and I settled for the international food court at our University Village.

We decided on Thai. I got the BBQ pork noodles:
IMG_1726 With the soup on the side:
IMG_1727 Yum, MSG! It was chock-full of MSG. You could even see the MSG particles in it. I lapped it up. Delicious!

And Mimi got the Pad Sew Iw again:
IMG_1728 Unfortunately this time her dish was a bit on the dry side. Bad for her, good for me, since I took the leftovers home. ;-)
IMG_1729 Mine was just mediocre, too, but because it reminded me of a Singaporean dish so much, I could not help finishing it:
IMG_1730
And the hot sauce makes it so much better…
IMG_1731 IMG_1732 I did, however, love the bean sprouts hidden underneath:
IMG_1734 Correct me if I’m wrong…but I’m pretty sure this is not Thai food. In fact, it seems like a Hong Kong dish: wanton noodles with char siew pork.
IMG_1737 Ah well. Hong Kong, Thai. They all look the same! (I’m being sarcastic, in case you didn’t already know).

Mimi was a sweetheart and gave me an early  Christmas gift:
IMG_1733 Two DVDs:
IMG_1735 Heathers and Casanova (LOVED Heath Ledger!)

And a Probar and chocolates:
IMG_1736 They were gone by that evening as snack. ;-)

I, however, was a horrible friend and didn’t get her anything. :-(
I know, I know…But I forgot that you’re supposed to give gifts on Christmas! My family never did this tradition. I’ve always had a pretty giftless Christmas…

Anyway. I’m right now working on my new domain. I’ve already signed up and have imported my blog, but being technically-challenged, I’m having massive troubles with the themes and CSS and blah blah blah. I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, but I’ll figure it out. But please stay in tune for my new blog! :-)

Question of the day: What do you do when there’s a snowstorm? Go out and build a snowman? Sit around the house drinking hot cocoa? Hibernate?

P.S. Planning a DC blogger lunch meet-up, probably sometime between January 1-4. Please email me: burp.excuzme@gmail.com

Ooh I love Heathers. You can keep the snow down there please. We have been warned all day in Boston and not a flake yet!

we haven’t gotten any snow up here in NY but all of my friends from DC are flipping out. It sounds like you got a ton!!! All the food looks super yummy, and I like the hat! :)

There is a snowstorm here too. We’ve been stuck inside all day long!

Glad you are with your family though. No better way to get snowed in then with the ones you love! ;)

Have a great night sweetheart.

We have quite a bit of snow here just south of Richmond and the city is getting slammed with it.

Let me know if you need help with your new domain. I’m not a pro by any means but will certainly help if I can, I know what a pain it can be!

I’m definitely a hibernater. After living in Wisconsin, I’m over snow.

Thankfully, SC rarely gets any.

Brrrr, must be pretty cold down there. My son is even in a colder place right now. 12,000 ft up in the mountain in Switzerland, doing what he love, snowboarding.

Your mum looks very pretty, love all of this food you pick. Yum!

hehe wow, I totally know that feeling when the “south” gets slammed w/ snow. I think what the “north” doesn’t realize is that we’re not as prepared as they are. There aren’t plows ready to go, ppl aren’t stocked up w/ salt and shovels, etc. It’s the not being prepared that sucks! Up here it’s a breeze. We have our shovels, our snowblowers, the plows come every hour, they salt the roads and it’s all safe and fine w/in a few hrs of the snow falling!

Your lunch looks surprisingly similar to what I’m eating right now! Well, the soup at least. Mine’s really, really salty.

Aww that’s really sweet of Mimi! :) I loved Heath Ledger too. Now I get depressed ea. time I watch one of his movies.

Enjoy your time w/ your parents and I’m jealous of your DC meet up!

Oh and PS — seriously, send me an email w/ your issues and I’ll have J help you out. It comes to him like breathing, so he’ll be able to offer advice and help out and give you tips, instructions, etc.

I sit around the house, drinking beer. haha, no jk, well maybe :) That’s what I’m doing now, but there is no snow. When it snows I like to a) watch it fall, b) stay inside and clean, and c) go accross the stress and hop on the treadmill and watch it fall and pretend I am outside running!

Your mom’s a nagger too?? My mom is the queen. But I love her!

LOL! Your perking up face is priceless! Ah, once you’ve acclimated to SoCal weather it must be torture to go to the snow! But I wish we could have a little bit of snow in SF, it’s so festive! Stay warm–sweet potatoes may help :)

I am so envious of all your snow! Up in Vermont we aren’t getting any of this wonderful storm, although it is ridiculously cold. So basically we’re getting the worst part of winter (the painfully cold temperatures) without any of the pretty snow that makes it all bearable. I’ve been eating a lot of warm oats and tea to try and stay warm, but I’d much rather be out skiing, sledding, and just playing in it rather than staring out at the meager inch or two that is on the ground.

I can’t believe you guys were driving! I wasn’t even shoveling our driveway. We went outside in the afternoon and the snow was up to Hannah’s waist. She “burrowed” through, it was kind of fun :) But the snow wasn’t sticky enough to build a snowman today. Then we had brownies and hot cocoa.

Let me know when the blogger meet up will be. I’m totally stuck with winter break activities, but it’s over on the 4th I think.

Oh, I just got your comment while I was typing this – LOL about the lamb testicles :)

We have a super H mart here too!! I’ve only been once because it’s kind of outside the city, but I need to go soon and stock up on my Asian foods, I need kabocha! And they have awesome mochi cakes :)
Well, we don’t have many snow days haha, but we did have one “big” one for us! I ventured out in 1 or 2 min increments to take pics and then cuddled up with hot cocoa and a book. It’s been chilly for Houston though so I”ve been watching movies, and working on some crafts for homemade gifts.
As a side note, I’m happy to see you’re comfortable enough to start posting more pics of yourself because you’re adorable!!
Enjoy the holidays with your parents!

It is snowing here right now. Ridiculously much. And what did my friends and I decide to do? Stay in and drink hot chocolate? Definitely not. We decided to go ice skating at an outdoor rink. LOL. Almost as crazy as you guys deciding to drive to the supermarket.

Have no fear chica, I will be around when you are here. I’m not flying anywhere actually, that was just a description of what I had to go through when I was still at MIT.

Your eats look pretty good! Although I have to say I can’t wait to see what you cook with all those sweet potatoes.

The snow has hit here to and sorry to be a downer but I hate the stuff!!! Will make going to work very difficult now.
You really suit that hat btw :-)

Ohh some grocery shopping sounds a good way to kill the time though. On snowy days I usually end up sticking on my wellie boots and going out in it for a walk, making snowmen just makes my hands to cold!

Also, why is the K-mart called “Super H-mart”? Does K=H? So confused!

I feel your pain! In the North of the UK we have had three days of constant snowstorms. I’m going stir-crazy here…I want to run outside so badly. Hmph.

Anyway, you look so cute bundled up in your hat and scarf. At least you can be stylish and warm at the same time.

Generally in snowstorms I just cry and curse a lot ; )

Hope it melts for you soon.

Snow storms usually result in my hibernation with the computer and drinking lotsa coffee. Oh wait… that’s most days :P

Sorry you got stranded.. but there could have been worse places to be, right? At least you got to spend time with the fam!

Your eats look ok.. personally I find your home cooked meals to look alot more drool-worthy.

Wow! A snowstorm! Serious? The first time I saw snow was on a ski mountain in Korea! I love snow. But I’m not sure I’d like being stuck at home in a snowstorm. I’d just laze in my cozy room with a cup of hot chocolate and a heater at my feet, and read a good book. =P

I too am snowed in ;) We live near Va.tech but over a mountain–not in town! So, we got a good bit and have a mountain to travel over if we want to get out. I have been hibernating for the most part. Made cookies for the family and then cookies for me (food allergies:). Have lots to read, but have been watching movies instead. I like the snow and I think we are going to have a white Christmas for a change :)
