I’ve been bobbing around the blog world for almost a year, and sometimes, I feel like I’m back in high school again.
Don’t get me wrong—I adore the blog world, I really do. I think we have a fantastic community, and even my parents were astonished by the “warm, kind, and loving” people here after reading some of your comments. But…there are still many aspects of the blogosphere that reminds me of high school.
First, we have that Great “Popular Group” Divide. Some blogs are just more popular than others, for whatever reason. It might be their fancy pictures. It might be their fancy writing. It might be their gregarious and charismatic ways. Or it might simply be the reason that they’ve been around longer, thus building a more loyal readership.
Another aspect that reminds me of high school: labels. I don’t know why, but we humans have the tendency to stick labels on anyone and anything. In high school, we labeled each other as “Nerds” and “Marching Band geeks” and “Punks”, blah blah blah. As a blogger, I know and experience the tendency to want to label myself and others. Some of us have the label of a “healthy living blogger”, some are “vegan” or “raw”, some as “restaurant reviewers”, some as “bakers”, some as “mothers”, some as “weight loss”, others as “ED-recoverers”, and so on and so forth.
Yet another high school stigma in the blog world is trends. Come on, we all know what they are, and have fallen victims to it. For whatever ridiculous reason, we feel the need to also fall in love with whatever the popular bloggers are loving: oats-in-a-jar, yogurt “mess”, Green Monsters, chia seeds, Larabars, yahdee yahdee yah. Whatever’s “in” right now, we want to try it, we almost feel pressured to love it as well, despite the fact that we probably would never even have considered eating it otherwise.
I’m not necessarily saying it’s a bad thing. But I wonder…will we ever be rid of high school? Seems like it’s following me wherever I go, even to the Internet.
That said, I’ll go ahead and list a few of my personal opinions that may sound blasphemous in the blog world (the Health Living section anyway):
So there. Anyway. I’ve been watching a lot of Anthony Bourdain’s foodie escapades in No Reservations, and it made me think that part of being a foodie should be that excitement of trying something completely new. Something you never thought you would try or make. After all, the realm of food is vast and adventurous, and limiting your eats to within the fads of the blog world is just so…limiting and boring? That’s why I immediately agreed to try out Pepperidge Farms’ Puff Pastry as part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program. This is a new adventure for me, because in truth, I don’t really like puff pastry. I’m just not a pastry person. The texture of flaky, crispy dough is just not as appealing to me as a dense, chewy bread. But, in the interest of broadening my foodie horizons, I decided to give it a try. Note: For this post’s pictures, please excuse the glarish tone of my pictures…I made it in the evening, and the color quality is just horrible. Everybody, say hello to Mr. Puff Pastry (or is that Mrs?): Same with apples and onions: Now, I’ve never cooked with chorizo before, nor with heavy cream, unless you count baking desserts that I never ate a long time ago. So this was a new thing for me. Ooh, exciting! Here’s the recipe: Sweet & Spicy Puff Pastry Ball with Chorizo, Apples & Potatoes Chop up both potatoes, and roast in 350 degree oven for about 20-30 minutes until cooked through: Moving on. Dump in onions, garlic, and apples. Cook for a few minutes. Next, take a sheet of the puff pastry and mold it into a small bowl: Here’s my mistake #2: I baked at about 350 degree temperature, only to find that the dough was not rising. Holy crap. I frantically rushed online to check, and found out that puff pastry only rises at a temperature around 400 degrees. Thankfully, I raised the temperature early enough for the puff pastry to bake perfectly. Here’s the baby: And how do I find time to do this while I’m in the middle of final exams, I don’t know…But I have just two more left until everything is over!! I cannot wait, wait, wait! Question of the day: Let’s be frank…anything “blasphemous” in the blog world that you want to confess out loud here? I won’t tell!

Here’s how it looks inside the box:
Two rectangular sheets of fresh pastry dough. I left it out to thaw while I prepared my ingredients:
Potatoes and sweet potatoes. Now, those are pretty predictable.
But the new ingredient I incorporated was beef Mexican chorizo and heavy cream:
With kale, because you can never go wrong with some greens in there.
ndful raisins
Next, heat up a skillet and dump all the chorizo into it:
Ok. Here’s my first mistake: I think I might have bought a cheap-ass chorizo, because this was 60% grease and 30% meat and 10% “bonus” substance. Honestly. It was disgustingly greasy, and I had to drain most of that grease out.
Add in the potatoes, mix and cook for 2 minutes or so:
Then dump in the kale:
And then the raisins:
And then pour about 1/4 cup heavy cream in there:
Let the whole thing cook until the kale is wilted and the mixture has absorbed all the flavor of the chorizo.
Spoon in the chorizo filling, and seal it shut, trimming off the extra dough.
Flip the bowl over to release the ball:
Then slit the middle. Brush some extra heavy cream on the dough.
Bake in oven.
I have no idea why I slit a hole in the middle. It just seemed to make sense. But it looks kind of like an asshole. A very big asshole. Damn it.
Ah, well. It’s the taste that counts.
And it was mighty tasty. Although I forgot the cheese. I was meaning to add some Cabot Cheese in there, but I totally forgot. Mistake #3.
But that’s okay. It actually didn’t really need the cheese, because with the spicy chorizo and the sweetness of the sweet potatoes, apples, and raisins, the flavors worked really well. Cheese might have been an overkill.
It doesn’t look that great, I admit. Kale loses its green quality when cooked in the red grease of chorizo.
Unfortunately, my eyes were bigger than my stomach, because try as I might, I almost couldn’t finish this in one sitting. Almost, save for a tiny bite:
As you can probably guess, I did not use all my chorizo filling for this pastry. I decided to turn it into soup. I dumped everything into a pot with some chicken broth:
Poured in more of the heavy cream:
Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble…
The result was a really interesting, thick stew:
By interesting I mean yummy, of course.
Leftover fillings are best turned into a rich, satisfying stew.
Phew! That was quite an interesting adventure. Honestly, I was afraid of making a big fat inedible mess, but they both turned out delicious! And it was great fun!

Wow, you are awesome. Although, I disagree with some of your points – ie, trying out things in the blogworld, liking healthy things and etc BUT I have to say, there are just too many blogs that out that :
Make a person feel guilty for eating something that is unpure/they bashed those food like there’s no tomorrow, I mean, how do you think I would feel if a person said, “I DISPISE SOY” and later in some other post said, ‘everyone should eat what they feel like’ … contradiction much? Don’t cha agree?
Love ya hunny bunches! xoxo
haha sophia! so much true. but i dont mind the fads and such, helps me get new ideas and try things i never would have thought or considered, as far as the foodie stuff goes.
hate pomegranates and quinoa and i still dont know what xanthan gum is. wouldnt eat oatmeal out of a jar, much to complicated to get the spoon in that far. i do love chia seeds! hate mcdonalds and im not sorry.
ps i love ham. does that make up for hating mcdonalds?
Wow, I totally never thought this blog-clique issue would ever get addressed EVER, but of course I should have left it up to you, being the butt-kicking unicorn girl that you are.
Many times I actually feel that I experience the full brunt of the blog-shunning, just because I’m kinda new to blogging. I guess it’s a bit like being the new girl at school. And I’ve just never really been good at wanting to make people like me.
However, I do love canned pumpkin and hummus. Sometimes, together.
I also love dates and nuts, and since I know that is all that a Larabar actually consists of, I just eat the food. Not the label.
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FINAL 2! I’M DOWN TO 2 TOO! WE’RE ALMOST DONE WOOHOOOOO
You go on with your bad self girl! I love this “I am who I am” attitude, you rock the party!
Lol, I do love organic fruits and veg, don’t eat dairy and canned pumpkin really doesn’t bother me
You are too funny! Love you!
sofia!
this post was so refreshing wow… I mean, I have to agree people should eat what they believe/want and all, and I mean raw vegan to mcdonalds. but who doesn’t like a “splurge” or heck- processed stuff every once in a while? (or often hehe) it’s convenient and tasty- and may not be the best for your skinny jeans, but a week of intuitive eating will balance out… gotta start baking “traditional” cookies for the holidays… <3! Laci
i LOVE your honesty!! Every person is different for sure. We all have our own likes and dislikes. and I really love the way you just laid it all out there. Great stuff!!
Oh I SOOO get you. The blog world is definitely like High School all over again. I really wonder about some people and whether they were raised by wolves!
But anyway, when I read your comment about the asshole I almost spurted out my drink laughing. Thanks for making me laugh every day Sophia!
you are so right sofia! as I was reading this I was chuckling to myself becuase you are SO right, I know that I have been victim to buying something (not even knowing if it will be a waste of money bc I wont like it) just because I saw it on someone else blog. I have tried the Oats in a jar, and to be frank, I am not a huge fan! I prefer my oats steaming hot in a bowl and I eat my PB on the side, not drizzled on top, at first I thoughtthe only way to eat it was drizzeled on top because everyone else did that but then I realized, this is MY food I will eat it how i want!
you keep eating your mcdonalds girl and thank you so much for making us all more aware that there is not right or wrong, and to just eat what you want!
your food is SUPER creative, and it always is thats why I love coming here, and the fact that you are a great writer! those puff pastry’s look so fluffy and delicious!
I loved this post, both for the asshole comment & your insights into the ‘blog world’.
I, like you, think Larabars are n-a-s-t-y. I do enjoy hummus & peanut butter (& did before I began blogging) and green smoothies (which obviously, was a blogging influence)
I think blogging is good because a lot of people can be creative & I’m definitely willing to try more things after seeing them prepared & whatnot. I do find the popularity thing to be weird – just because some blogs are more established, they’re more popular & in turn, they only feature blogs of friends of theirs, making them popular
Good thing I like blogging for the the blogging, eh?
Chia seeds – I think I’ll pass on those, the disgusting glop they used to make to put on chia pets – I’m gagging just thinking of it.
oh sophia…you hit the nail on the head! its so easy to get caught up in what we should be doing, that it is easy to lose sight of what we want to do and what is best for us. i truly try and express this on my blog everyday, because i could care less about trends. if i like it, i like it. if i don’t, i don’t. amazing grass, raw foods, expensive products i can’t afford…blah.
i eat meat if i want, i eat veggies if i choose, and i lead a mostly vegetarian diet because it makes ME feel best. if we only listened to our bodies and not to others, we could learn so much. thank you for being you, writing a post about how ridiculously stupid high school is (p.s. it doesn’t end…the working world is the same way…hate to break it to you) and just how awesome, and honest you are!
those assholes look mighty fine
Nail. On. The. Head. Seriously. There are some things that I love that I definitely wouldn’t have thought to try without blogs, but there are some things that are just ridiculous and over hyped. My confessions- I really love diet coke. A lot. I eat pb from the jar all the time. I eat the same thing for lunch almost every day which is why I rarely put lunch pictures on my blog. tsk tsk.
Haha. I like your list! Let’s see. I like diet soda and when I go out, I have more than just a small pour of wine.
Oh, I forgot the major one. I think oatmeal is pretty blah.
Other notes.
I use splenda. not stevia, or nu nuatruals
I love diet soda.
i do love green monsters though. and pb. and living clean and healthy. always have, really.
For me, my blog has introduced a lot of new foods and ways of eating. in a way, it is helping me recover from ed.. its formed a support group, kind of. I dont want the blogosphere to be cliquey. i hated high school. hated. hated.hated. worst years of my life. depression at its finest.
my grade 12 year was OK though. other than that.. stink.
I don’t like bars though. I would rather eat my calories in the form of real food.
Haha, your assessment of the blog world is pretty accurate…we’re in highschool cliques, but I’d like to say that we’re a lot more mature than highschoolers. And it’s perfectly ok to not go with the current blogger trends.
You are so creative with your puff pastry. My coupon is still sitting on my desk because I have NO CLUE what to do with puff pastry. Any hints?
Hey girl… im not a popular blogger.. i tried to be.. but i dont mince words, i dont eat what everyone else does, and i make no excuses for the fact that i eat CHEAP.. because i HAVE TO. family to feed.. i got no time for shopping at whole foods! no time to juice, no time to make smoothies, in fact i dont even have time to cook most days of the week!!! so healthy blogger??? look elsewhere! lol
i love your blog for the same reason you are totally honest and real! nicely done!!!!
I have thought about this soooo many times and completely agree! I used to find myself feeling insecure because I didn’t spend $150 at Whole Foods every week or have 15 different nut butters…hmmm ah here’s my post
http://healthyhotthousewife.blogspot.com/2009/09/blogging-insecurities.html
I mean come on…I love Taco Bell and McDonalds and Dairy…I will NEVER eat all raw foods or want to run a freakin marathon (who runs for fun anyway!).
p.s. That “very big ass hole” comment alone has created a dedicated follower out of me
I can’t wait to read more!
oh my gosh hahahahaha i love you more with each new post. I was laughing and nodding and everything you just said, er wrote. I completely agree!!!! Some bloggers are just too freakin perfect and it makes me sick, literally. I can’t read most of them. ‘Oh gosh, how do I choose from all these brands sending me things, oh I’m going on another sponsored trip from my sponsor’, blah blah blah I do enjoy my group of blogger friends even though I’m not in the ‘popular’ group, haha You rock girl no matter what and I love trying new foodie things too
yum!
You go girl!
This post is amazing and I can totally relate. I thought i was just crazy when i started to notice similarties between blogging and my high school. I agree with the whole trend thing, some things I do feel pressured to try. But most often I always do my own thing, and just do what makes me happy. I am so honored that people want to read my blog, but if they want me to conform my thought/life style just to keep them reading then im not sure if i want to have them as readers… is that weird to say? I hope not. All your eats look delish as usual girl
How funny – I just bought puff pastry! Love both your yummy creations! I feel like the blogs I enjoy the most are the ones that I really feel like I know the person behind the computer, no matter what they’re posting about
I agree with the popularity comment (and the others too). Great for someone to say it.
Sophia! I am just catching up on your posts now, and this one definitely struck a chord.
As a not-so-popular blogger who loves writing, I often wonder what makes certain blogs/bloggers so popular? Especially when the writing isn’t that interesting, they have horrific grammar or it looks as if they haven’t proofread their posts. I’d actually say it pisses me off. Whenever I discuss this with my other blog friends, I call The Bloggers the “A-team” and there’s some bizarre hierarchy thereafter. I think I’m on the F-team?
And I hate labels, I really do. I don’t even dig the vegan label anymore. Unlike you, I really craved Greek yogurt and thought it was stoopid not to eat something I love. Hello dairy! And in high school, I tested out all the labels (choir, golf, cheerleading, theater, musical theater, dance…haha I was all ova!).
Fads happen everywhere and as the food blog community, we see what’s up. That’s fine, but I get frustrated when bloggers create “challenges” that involve “rules” but they claim they aren’t “diets.” BS.
Thank you for bringing this up and creating this discussion. J’ADORE!
Holy crap…this is the first one of your blogs that I’ve read. You have a subscriber for life. That’s all I have to say. Fantastic. Fan-freaking-tastic:)
Your creativity never ceases to amaze me, and I love the dish you developed.
All points you identified are well taken, would you consider your blog popular? Because judging solely by the number of comments it certainly is, and I think that speaks to that strong unique voice you bring. Thanks for making us think.
Gut zu Wissen. Kommt hier noch ein weiterer Beitrag? Möchte sehr gern einiges mehr darüber erfahren. Kannst du mir per Mail weiterhelfen?
I think overnight oats are disgusting. There, I said it. Thank you for being frank!
I hear ya on this one!!! I actually just wrote a post on something similar hahaa. I think it’s human nature to “label”- but it’s important to keep those labels flexible & open minded. I think it’s great to try something you saw on a blog- but decide for yourself if you like it!!!
I don’t buy organic either. I eat fast food & pizza. Overnight oats are silly. So are $100 protein powders.
I think your blog post was secretly a solid kick off to a potential series of posts about this topic. So many users pretend to understand what they’re writing about when it comes to this stuff and really, nearly no one actually get it. You seem to understand it however, so I think you ought to run with it. Thanks a lot!
Analyzing about a awesome product and service which comes at this sort of high cost irritates all of us occasionally. In any case I can’t easily afford plenty of those high class stuff available. On the flip side I love dreaming about it and whenever possible I love the little joys of living. If you happen to belong to individuals that can readily afford to pay pricy product or service merely go for it. I reckon that life is about having a great time, what else?
