Prelude to a Korean-Mexican Fusion Throw-down

September 5, 2009

in blog meet-up,eating out,My story

On my last post I was ranting about grammar and spelling mistakes. Sigh. Well, my little lecture about upholding the honor of the English language turned around and nipped me in the ass…because right after posting that, a reader sent me a private email notifying me that I misspelled “marker” as “market”.

Oops. But don’t bother gleefully scrolling down to the last post to take pleasure in my mistake, because I already edited it. ;-p

Anyway. There is an update on that vandalized piece of notice. Yesterday I was walking back to my room and I did a double-take to find that the sign I had corrected was removed and replaced with this:
IMG_0401 Double-taped and wrapped with plastic, no less. I guess the management took offence at a little grammatical and spelling correction and is trying to make sure nobody tampers with it anymore. At least now they recognized their impairment in words and are sticking to good ol’ graphics.

I have a million things to do, so this will be a short post. Shorter than regular, anyway. Apparently I’m getting a double-nip in the ass with my previous superior attitude towards language and writing because I am painfully stuck in the middle of writing an essay about evolution debates. What is this? I never get writer’s block. HEEELLLP!!

Okay, back to topic…

Remember my dear blogger friend Mimi who has the glorious blessing of being in the same school as me? Fine, it’s the other way around, but anyway, we met up on Thursday for lunch and to do some brainstorming for our school newspaper.

Through the wonders of Twitter, I found out that another food truck called Calbi BBQ would be stopping by our campus. If you live in LA and call yourself a well-informed foodie, you should already know about the hype that is going around food trucks and fusion cuisines.
IMG_0402
I would say the single food truck that ignited the feverous interest in this new cuisine would be Kogi, a Korean-Mexican influenced food truck. Well, Calbi BBQ is one of the many flatterers of Kogi that popped up once Kogi met success. Or, in a less attractive definition, a total rip-off.
IMG_0403There has been some controversy over how Calbi BBQ is clearly and shamelessly imitating Kogi from its menu to even its logo, but that didn’t really stop me from dragging Mimi over to try it out. Hey, in the topic of good taste, there is no controversy. There is only yummy and not-yummy.

To Calbi’s credit, the people there were pretty nice. When the guy heard me saying that I loved cheese, he piled on extra for me. He was a bit too nice to Mimi, though, and obviously hitting on her hard. Poor Mimi. The pains of being pretty, eh? ;-)

I ordered two tacos. One shrimp, and one chicken:
IMG_0404
Korean-style marinated shrimp and chicken, romaine lettuce in Asian-style dressing, cheese, toasted sesame seeds. Encased in two corn tortillas.
IMG_0406 I was at first delighted that each taco was only $2 each, but utterly dismayed to find how tiny the portions were! I could have easily eaten two more.
IMG_0407The taste wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t spectacular. I’m not sure I see what the fuss is all about.
IMG_0408
I thought it was cool that they were also selling Korean drinks, though:
IMG_0405
If anyone sees this truck, please order the Milkis drink. It’s a carbonated milky drink. I realize now how gross that sounds but trust me, you’ll love it if you’re into fizzy exotic drinks.

One of the reason I’m posting about Calbi BBQ now (other than the excuse to procrastinate on my damn essay) is to give you a prelude to the next post I’ll be writing…where Mimi and I are gonna beat Calbi’s ass by coming up with our own Korean-Mexican fusion!

Hell yeah, they’re going down! *I’m making the “gangsta”-face right now* Stay tuned for that; Mimi and I will be cooking up something mighty delicious this coming Monday!! :D

Question of the day: Have you ever ordered from a food truck before? How was you experience, and what was the most interesting thing you’ve had?

Can’t believe I appear to be the first to post, but I’ve had the spelling thing come back to bite me too many times too. My excuse, no excuse really is that spell check didn’t get it.

Cali Cali sounds interesting but I have no doubt they will have no idea what hit them when you show them what they were missing

I think it’s hilarious that they replaced the sign :D You are making waves, girl!

I love the idea of food carts! I’ve only ever seen ones selling french fries/burgers here, and a lot of kebab/gyro ones in NY. No cool fusion cuisine :(

There’s a taco truck in a pretty ghetto neighborhood in Atlanta but the food is amazing. The meat’s juicy, tender and so well seasoned.

Agreed on Milkis. That stuff is amazing.

Carbonated milky drink?? Is it like a NY egg cream? Yum!

I notice spelling mistakes on my blog after I’ve posted and have been back and fourth editing until everything’s correct :) Spell checker is my best blogging friend and even then I get it wrong.

Never had food from a truck (besides ice cream man) but it sounds interesting. Can’t wait to see what you cook, my dad makes Korean all the time and I love it, especially bulgogi (sp?)!

I couldn’t help it and was going to ask if “offence” was a proper spelling of “offense,” but it came up on dictionary.com!

The only thing I have ever ordered from a food truck was a vegetarian hot dog in Chicago and a crepe in Paris. Food trucks are fun!

I’ve never ordered anything from a truck before! Well, I did purchase a knockoff designer bag from a truck…does that count?! ;)

That’s hilarious about the sign in your hallway – apparently there is still only one safety “reason” why people shouldn’t skateboard or bike in the hallway, lol!

When I worked in the city I would get breakfast bagels from a truck AND usually when I go to Home Depot I get food from the truck right outside…they make the best Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches…

One of my favorite thing to do is go to Flea Market near my house because they have rows of different vendors selling food out of their trucks..yuuuuuuums! The smell is that place is amazing!

there was an ice cream truck, and a “chip truck” that I would ALWAYS order from in my parents hometown.. whenevr we went to visit
seriously amazing french fries!!
oh the joys of childhood.

i would love to order from this truck though! YUM

I don’t think I’ve ever had something out a food truck like that! Other than ice cream of candy and the like, hehe. Mmm those tacos look yummy, but yes, very small! Excited to see your next post about you and Mimi’s adventures :D

I personally think the new posters are 10x’s better now so you did your school a favor ;)

cabonated milky drink? hmm… guess that’s definitely one of those things you’ve got to try for yourself!

hehe :) I have been catching up on your posts, I would be sooo lost in life w/o spell check! I loveee the nomnom truck, we don’t have anything like that here :( I have never eaten anything out of a truck, and if I saw one I would be too sketched out to try that here in bmore. But I would if I ever go back to LA!!!!!

And LOL about the sign :)

When my husband was showing us around University of Pennsylvania, he said that he got most of his food from the various food trucks around the campus. He says it was a lot of great stuff!

Good luck with your essay! I’m sure you’ll break through your writer’s block in no time.

We don’t really have food trucks where I live, would be nice though…Oh BUT: we do have little ice cream trucks in summer …:)
Good luck with your essay!

I used to order steak tacos from a taco truck several years ago. They tasted amazing, but to be honest, I was always a bit worried about what I was really eating…

Can’t wait for your Mexican-Korean fusion!!!

Have a great weekend! :)

Mica September 5, 2009 at 5:06 pm

I’ve had Milkis before. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was definitely better than I expected from the name.

I can see why the management could have been offended by your correction. It’s always important to remember that using “better” grammar does not make you a “better” person.

sue September 5, 2009 at 5:20 pm

yumm…i already have ten gazillion taco trucks/shacks to visit when i’m in LA…hopefully i’ll have room for these fusion ones too…

I’ve never ordered from a food truck before, but I’m loving your sharing the experience with us! It seems so fun and cool! :)

Reply

Gina September 5, 2009 at 6:32 pm

hehe, I noted that mistake too :) Of course, I’m the same way you are about grammar, but I know I make a lot os mistakes because I type fast and don’t do a lot of editing.

I have never eaten from a truck, however I have seen posts (including yours) about great experiences, so I need to get the experience myself! Columbus is boring, no food trucks. Do you count the ice cream truck? I used to get a blue popsicle with a gumball on top!

girlichef September 5, 2009 at 6:47 pm

I always have to try something…at least once…sometimes more…to decide for myself if I actually like it. I’m dying to try one of those crazy-sounding drinks! I used to get food from food trucks, or as we called them “the roach coach’ years ago…basic sammies, biscuits & gravy, pizza, etc. It’s been years, though! Can’t wait to see what the 2 of you come up with :D

Nancy September 5, 2009 at 6:54 pm

CUTE! I’ve ordered an ice cream cone from an ice cream truck once… I guess I could count that as a food truck, haha!

The shrimp type please :)

I’d like to taste the carbonated milky drink sounds very good!

Cheers!

Aww, no worries about the spelling error. I am a HORRIBLE speller and its ironic because I even graduated with a degree in English and Writing. I guess growing up in an era of spell check, it really didn’t bare well on my spelling abilities today.

I don’t think I’ve had much experience ordering from a Food Truck. Well, no, I did just buy a soft pretzel from a food cart in Philly and it was UNBELIEVEABLE!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

elra September 5, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Miammm, that taco look so refreshing at the moment.

Reply

Errign September 5, 2009 at 7:59 pm

I live in the north east (AKA under a rock) so things like food trucks just don’t happen here, unfortunately.

Those tacos look yum though!

Reply

Reeni September 5, 2009 at 8:23 pm

So funny about the sign! Your tacos look yummy! I have no doubt that you’ll make some kick-butt food that will put them to shame. I can’t remember eating off a truck – we don’t really have any where I live in upstate NY. When I lived in Tucson some of them were scary looking – as in dirty. Ick. I usually pass off spelling errors on-line as a result of bad typing skills.

Funny. Language is so not my strength but I have been known to deface a poster or two in correction – usually punctuation. I’m not paranoid that I’ll have to spell check all my comments in the future! :)

Alas and alack, no food trucks in White Bear Lake. Only fond memories of the NYC ones. But L.A. sounds way more interesting. Korean-Mexican fusion? Holy cow! But it looks like fun. And I love how everyone twitters to find out where they are! And sadly, I am the typo queen. Not a great thing for a writer.

Hells yeah, Bobby Flay’s got NOTHING on this throwdown!

In Houston we have a lot of Mexican food trucks. Some are wonderful, some are godawful.

Reply

Rachel September 5, 2009 at 11:20 pm

LOL at the sign. Very er…smart of them.:D

Nope, food trucks are like a rarity around here! Weird ‘cos Asians are supposed to love their food anywhere and everywhere! Would be cool to hail a moving restaurant though, especially if it sold exotic fizzy drinks and yummy cuisine:)

How cool! I’ve ordered from a BBQ food truck, but it’s not a traveling one. It’s always stationed in the same spot, but for some reason is in truck form. It was pretty tasty though!

You’re so lucky to have a blogger friend to drag places like that! I’ve never ordered from a food truck, maybe now that I’m living in Cali, I’ll have to take advantage of that opportunity!
I think your grammatical corrections are hilarious!
