Prelude to a Korean-Mexican Fusion Throw-down

September 5, 2009

in blog meet-up,eating out,My story

On my last post I was ranting about grammar and spelling mistakes. Sigh. Well, my little lecture about upholding the honor of the English language turned around and nipped me in the ass…because right after posting that, a reader sent me a private email notifying me that I misspelled “marker” as “market”.

Oops. But don’t bother gleefully scrolling down to the last post to take pleasure in my mistake, because I already edited it. ;-p

Anyway. There is an update on that vandalized piece of notice. Yesterday I was walking back to my room and I did a double-take to find that the sign I had corrected was removed and replaced with this:
IMG_0401 Double-taped and wrapped with plastic, no less. I guess the management took offence at a little grammatical and spelling correction and is trying to make sure nobody tampers with it anymore. At least now they recognized their impairment in words and are sticking to good ol’ graphics.

I have a million things to do, so this will be a short post. Shorter than regular, anyway. Apparently I’m getting a double-nip in the ass with my previous superior attitude towards language and writing because I am painfully stuck in the middle of writing an essay about evolution debates. What is this? I never get writer’s block. HEEELLLP!!

Okay, back to topic…

Remember my dear blogger friend Mimi who has the glorious blessing of being in the same school as me? Fine, it’s the other way around, but anyway, we met up on Thursday for lunch and to do some brainstorming for our school newspaper.

Through the wonders of Twitter, I found out that another food truck called Calbi BBQ would be stopping by our campus. If you live in LA and call yourself a well-informed foodie, you should already know about the hype that is going around food trucks and fusion cuisines.
IMG_0402
I would say the single food truck that ignited the feverous interest in this new cuisine would be Kogi, a Korean-Mexican influenced food truck. Well, Calbi BBQ is one of the many flatterers of Kogi that popped up once Kogi met success. Or, in a less attractive definition, a total rip-off.
IMG_0403There has been some controversy over how Calbi BBQ is clearly and shamelessly imitating Kogi from its menu to even its logo, but that didn’t really stop me from dragging Mimi over to try it out. Hey, in the topic of good taste, there is no controversy. There is only yummy and not-yummy.

To Calbi’s credit, the people there were pretty nice. When the guy heard me saying that I loved cheese, he piled on extra for me. He was a bit too nice to Mimi, though, and obviously hitting on her hard. Poor Mimi. The pains of being pretty, eh? ;-)

I ordered two tacos. One shrimp, and one chicken:
IMG_0404
Korean-style marinated shrimp and chicken, romaine lettuce in Asian-style dressing, cheese, toasted sesame seeds. Encased in two corn tortillas.
IMG_0406 I was at first delighted that each taco was only $2 each, but utterly dismayed to find how tiny the portions were! I could have easily eaten two more.
IMG_0407The taste wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t spectacular. I’m not sure I see what the fuss is all about.
IMG_0408
I thought it was cool that they were also selling Korean drinks, though:
IMG_0405
If anyone sees this truck, please order the Milkis drink. It’s a carbonated milky drink. I realize now how gross that sounds but trust me, you’ll love it if you’re into fizzy exotic drinks.

One of the reason I’m posting about Calbi BBQ now (other than the excuse to procrastinate on my damn essay) is to give you a prelude to the next post I’ll be writing…where Mimi and I are gonna beat Calbi’s ass by coming up with our own Korean-Mexican fusion!

Hell yeah, they’re going down! *I’m making the “gangsta”-face right now* Stay tuned for that; Mimi and I will be cooking up something mighty delicious this coming Monday!! :D

Question of the day: Have you ever ordered from a food truck before? How was you experience, and what was the most interesting thing you’ve had?

The idea of Korean tacos is blowing my mind right now :P Also, so is carbonated milk. The fizzies hurt my tongue, I’m a wuss.

The only food truck I ever visited was at 3am after stumbling out of a bar. It was disgusting. They put beef gravy on my poutine. As a poutine purist, I was horrified. But, seeing as I “stumbled” my way over there, I also gobbled it up :P

I can’t believe those food strucks have meals that look THAT fresh. I’ve only ordered from a truck one time and it was NASTY! Hahah- glad they replaced the sign ;)

Emily September 6, 2009 at 9:49 am

Hahah, that is so funny about the sign. Did you notice they still used incorrect grammar?!

I’ve never heard of food trucks before. Maybe it’s a western thing?

Hey! You nailed it. I’ve been here for the last 3 years, this year being the 4th.

How far along is (she?) in the pre-pharmacy program or is she already in pharmacy school?

I wish they had food trucks here in the UK, if they did, I would love to try stuff.

Carbonated milk drinks…I saw some in China, but didn’t try it since I don’t like milk and I thought it was a little bit weird, lol.

I wanted to say a BIG BIG thank you for you post on George Foreman’s Grill!! After I showed your post to my mom, she agreed to buy one for me. I LOVE YOOOUUUUU!!! (and my new grill!)
I also tried your grilled sammie idea with cheese (I used laughing cow wedge), pickles, turkey. You’re right, the sour pickles were great in the sandwich. I didn’t had the guts to use preserve, though, lol.

I love how Cali is full of food trucks like that…although Im’ sorry it wasn’t worth the money!! Chipotle might have done a better job with taco’s right? hehehe OR you could totally make your own. Korean kalbi sauce is AMAZING. I marinate my chicken with it all the time, and no matter whether you bake it, grill it, pan fry it…it’ll taste aamzingggg. I’ve eaten from many street vendors in Taiwan, but they’ve always been incredible!! No bad experience ever! And I would consider myself almost a native there considering how often i visit!

With a permanent market, you have nothing to fear – that plastic over the sign has no chance. muhahahah

Though I live in LA, the only food truck I’ve ever ordered from was an ice cream truck near the park where my daughter played when she was little. I’ve heard there is a fantastic hot dog truck in Culver City and I’m dying to try it. Those drivers just never come to my neighborhood–sigh.

Looking forward to the Korean-Mex throwdown!

Haha, I can totally see you beating that place’s butt. Seriously, you are the queen of cooking up a new fusion :)

I haven’t had a Milkis since I was a kid. It’s more like the little yo-gu-ru-tu bottles carbonated. Used to be one of my favs!

I actually nipped a sample from a crepe truck yesterday. It was a lovely nutella crepe, and totally hit my dessert spot. I was too stuffed to get a full sized portion!

I’ve heard about the Calbi truck. I haven’t had it yet. Maybe then they’re closer to my area. I’ll give them a try.

There are lot of food trucks selling yakitori and other skewered food but haven’t tried those. Just sniffing on the yummy wafts satisfy me I guess. :P

Also, I’m imagining Milkis tasting something like Calpis. So who flattered who? Their names even sound the same. :s

For sure, you’re gonna beat Calbi in that Kor-Mex showdown. Bring it on Sophia!

So funny! Reminds me of the Proverb, “Pride cometh before a fall…”.

I don’t recall eating from a food truck but I have eaten huge killer burritos from a food cart. :P

First of all, it’s so funny that the poster at your school was changed from words to pictures – it’s like they couldn’t take the time to be grammatically correct, so they just gave up!

MIT used to have a few food trucks around school. There was the Chinese food truck and the Mexican food truck and the Italian food truck and the Middle Eastern food truck. I only ever got food from the Chinese truck and it was greasy and kind of gross. Kind of like bad Chinese take-out. Nothing like the inventive Korean taco trucks!

I can’t wait to see your creations, I know they will outdo anything from a motor vehicle parked on the side of the road.

LMAO!! Hell yeah, they’re going down! *I’m making the “gangsta”-face right now*
Too Funny, Sophia!

When I used to live in Cali, I loooooved eating off the roach coaches. Do they still even call them that anymore? The trucks I ate off were predominantly Mexican food, no fancy fusion.

These food trucks have definitely stepped it up a few notches over the years.

I haven’t had Milki, but it sounds good. Have you had an egg cream? Yum! There are no eggs, or cream, it’s basically chocolate milk with seltzer. NYC heaven.

We don’t have a lot of trucks, but we do have some stands and one portable – a wonderful Salvadoran woman who sells arepas, empanadas, tamales and the like.

I am SO excited about your Korean-Mexican fusion! I can’t wait!!

Bravo to you for getting the sign changed! Just think, if it hadn’t been for you actually taking action, the sign would have still been sitting there, likely annoying many of our fellow grammar fans! You rock! (personally, I would still be tempted to add an “s” to the end of “reason” and place a comma after “thanks,” but that’s just me… :-) *sheepish expression* :-) )

The food trucks in LA sound so exciting! I’ve never had something from a food truck in the US, except for ice cream at state fairs… :-) Actually, some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted was from a little fair truck – honey ice cream homemade by the Kentucky Bee Association! Chocolate Honey Ice Cream is beyond delicious… :-) In Israel, though, little falafel trucks rock my world!! :-)

Thank you for your great question about frozen okra! Actually, frozen okra is great! We use it quite frequently… I just thaw out the okra well in a colander so it can drain and not wind up soggy, and then pat it dry and stir fry it just like fresh! Yum! :-)

Good luck with the writer’s block! I’ve been there… *sending sympathetic hugs* :-)

Oh I have only ever ordered from a food-truck at the State Fair/Carnival. I never see them day to day. I take that back somewhat- we have hot dog vendors on the street downtown but only at 2 am for the drunkards. I don’t eat hot dogs so there goes that order. I wish there were better food-trucker vendors down here in the South.

I’ve read article about the Kogi. It does seem very interesting, though I am not a huge Mexican fan. Still, though I wish we had one closer by, just to try it. Of course, I’d get all the cheese and meat taken off which sort of makes it pointless. But still, fun to try.

I can’t say that I think those tacos from Calbi actually look good. Maybe that’s because I’ve eaten the amazing tacos from Kogi, here is my review: http://onefoodguy.blogspot.com/2009/03/korean-bbq-tacos-at-kogi.html

I also have a couple places to get fantastic tacos here in Boston, La Verdad and Tremont 647 both make awesome, authentic Mexican tacos! So good!
