George Foreman, I’ve wronged you!

Hello everyone. Meet my new best friend…

IMG_0343 Mr. George Foreman! Whoever this guy is who invented the best foodie machine on Earth, I hope you’re single because I freaking ADORE you!

Okay, that didnt come out right…but seriously. No, seriously— I’m hitting myself over the head for not having made acquaintance with this little fella eons ago.

I remember once when my dad went to home depot to pick up some necessities and ended up coming back home grinning with a big box of George Foreman grill. My mom and I berated him for spending money on “frivolous and extravagantly unnecessary” things and ordered him to return it back. Chastened for being wasteful, my poor daddy reluctantly obliged. Little did we know we were making the most foolish mistake in our life!

I’m amazed at what this $8.88 thing from Wal-mart can do. It’s so quick and simple, too! I’ve been playing around with it any chance I got, and wheeee! What fun! Let me just share a two things I’ve made with this guy, though. I don’t want to overwhelm you with too much amazing food, lol.

What I love most is that you don’t have to just grill hamburgers in this thing. And why the heck would anyone want to get a separate panini grill when this works just as well? It’s so versatile!

Check this out:
IMG_0340 Fresh Fig and Brie Panini
IMG_0342
One side smeared with honey-mustard sauce and topped with fresh figs, the other with thick slices of brie and topped with balsamic-caramelized onions.
IMG_0341 Slapped on a thick crusty ciabatta (cut into 3/4 because apparently that’s the way to do it?)…
IMG_0345 Grilled for about 2 minutes in the George Foreman!
IMG_0346
Ooh~ Hot and crusty and chewy!
IMG_0344 Some figs crept out, but that was okay because they got nicely caramelized by the hot grill pan!
IMG_0348
And then, grilled sandwich #2:
IMG_0349
Raspberry preserves, cheddar cheese, pickles, smoked turkey

Don’t look at me like that. It’s freaking good, I swear! The sweet preserves, the gooey sharp cheese, the sour pickles, and the smoky turkey…
IMG_0350 Awesome midnight snack. I reckon it’s great for hangovers, too. I tell you, this George Foreman is perfect for college students, both the nerds and the party-ers!

By the way, I can’t believe a week has already gone. Things are really heating up and I’m getting bombarded by assignments and essays and readings, but yeah, I’m still enjoying it.

I love mingling among the busy students, participating in discussions and pretending to be smart, texting my friends at 2am in the morning, and being pressed on a tight schedule constantly. I seem to thrive in such an academic environment, and actually relish the pressure! I’m actually able to finish college in three years, but I think I might just drag it out a year more…hey, USC is paying most of my tuition fees anyway! ;-)

Psst! By the way, many of you seemed astounded that I managed to take a picture of my professor in class…Well, I’d like to think that he’d be honored to be featured in my blog! Haha! But honestly, he is pretty cool and I don’t think he’ll mind. :-)

Oh, and tomorrow is another special day…I’ll be having a small LA blogger meet-up! I won’t reveal the special people yet, though some of you might already know. I’ll update about our blogger date soon! >.<

P.S. I had no idea it’s National Panini Month! How appropriate and just in time, eh? ;-)

Great! I found another girl that totally LOVES making panini’s as well. I get crazy when I think of all the possible combinations, and will definitely try your brie-and-fig-one! (nutella and raspberries is nice too, mozzarella and tomato and prosciutto mmm, grilled vegetables and goat cheese, goat cheese and honey, OK: STOP!) Have a great weekend!xxx Julia (Taste of living)

my hubby had a george when he was a bachelor. it’s the only way he ever cooked meat cuz he didn’t know how to cook it any other way (the george makes it so easy). i don’t know how he would have survived without it.

I love paninis on the foreman! Its also good for grilling some quick chicken tenders. I used mine all the time when i was in school and didn’t have a kitchen! (and a lot when I did have a kitchen, but no grill or grill pan)

I don’t have a GF grill, but I really want one! Sounds like you got a great price at Wally World. I love grilled sandwiches and brie + figs sounds like an amazing combo. You definitely are much more gourmet than I was in undergrad. I barely ever cooked!

Those sandwiches looke delish! We loved our George Foreman Grill too, except for cleaning it! Then we got a griddler for our wedding– it’s just like the Foreman Grill but the plates come out and can be put in the dishwasher! Awesome!

I have the exact same grill, and I use it every morning, grilled toast is infinitely better than the hard crusty stuff produced in a toaster.

We had a George Forman as well, but my grandma took it with her >.< My mom thought it was too hard to clean, and so my Halmuhni took it before I started cooking (sniff). Little did I know what I was missing out on! How do you clean yours?

Reply

Carolyn Jung August 29, 2009 at 10:38 pm

OK, the most important question: Is it easy to clean? ;)

Reply

blueeyedheart August 29, 2009 at 11:21 pm

Ha, I love the Foreman grill too! I actually have two of them… but I really only use one, because I don’t use the meat one. Mine is so old that it doesn’t even have removable plates!! Gasp.

As for the waffle maker… it cost seven bucks at Target. :p

I thought college food was cans of soup and cold slices of pizza? Everything you make, even the simple things look so delicious. My favorite panini (served on the right bread ofcourse) is roasted turkey, cream cheese and strawberrrie jam grilled to perfection. I was the dummie who purchased a 100 dollars panini maker….Figtreeapps

I couldn’t live without my George Foreman. You are so right – it is IDEAL and NECESSARY for any college student. Paninis, quesadillas, grilled veggies, chicken, pork chops, steak…the possibilities are endless. I LOVE the fig and brie sammie. LOVE. As in I started drooling all over my computer.

Sounds like you are having lots of fun! Wish I could be at the meet-up.

Those sandwiches are fancy!! I knew you’d still be eating well even while away at college. No Cup O’ Noodle Soup for you! lol

Once again, you have put my cooking/foodie skills to shame!! MY GOSH i have had a foreman for god knows how long, but my panini’s have been SO DARN BORING. Thanks for always being my little muse when it comes to food combos! (I’ve developed a little bit of an obsession with runny yolks too)

Second of all, WHY does USC look like it has such great food?!?!

Reply

Palidor August 30, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I’m glad that you like your grill! I agree that it’s perfect for college students who have limited space. I own one, but I don’t like it. I can count on one hand the number of times I have used it. I dunno… I guess I prefer the old stove and skillet! Or maybe it’s because the food I made on it didn’t turn out as pretty as your food.

Oh, I’m a HUGE George Foreman fan! When I realized I could use it for paninis, it changed my life ;)

My son bought one last year at a re-sale shop for $3.00. He was 10 at the time and as we call it the “G.F.” is his best friend.

I told him as long as he has the G.F. and ramen noodles when he’s out on his own, he’ll be all set

Your sammy’s look delish!!

What a great use for a George Foreman grill. I haven’t used mine in a while but may have to take it out of storage because there is nothing I love more than a warm, crunchy panini.
