Conquering Good Eats in NoCal, Part I

July 21, 2009

in eating disorders,eating out

I’m back! It feels so good to be back at my usual blogging spot, typing away like a mad lady after being so blog-deprived for more than a week. Call me crazy, but the tap-click-tapping sound of my fingers dancing across the keyboard is such a reassuring, soothing melody to my ears!

And congratulations all you smart foodies who guessed where my next challenge was!
DSC02138 In-N-Out!!! Hark, can you hear the angels singing?

I’ve heard about this famous burger chain a long time ago, but I had never even dreamed of even wanting to try it out for myself. I guess at that time, I couldn’t even imagine the picture of my lips touching greasy fast-food.

But those who have been reading my blog for quite sometime already know that I’ve got a personal list of fear foods. One of them was pasta which, as you can see, I’ve already conquered it once and for all. In fact, I seem to have become a human advertisement for gnocchi. Haha!

Anyway, next on my list was fast food. Specifically, deep-fried stuff like french fries. But the way I challenge myself is that I promise myself that if I’m gonna challenge myself with a fear food, I will go all out and make sure it’s good so that I will actually enjoy the experience. I’ve heard so many good stuff about In-N-Out that I knew I just had  to start my first challenge in there.
DSC02136 And it certainly helps how freaking cheap the food here is! I could hear birds fluttering around my head chirping, “Cheap, cheap, cheap!”
DSC02137The best thing about In-N-Out is that they use quality ingredients, and they make their burgers and fries fresh right before their very eyes. When a restaurant (even a fast food one) has an open kitchen like this, that’s a very good thing.

With that super-simple menu, it took no longer than 10 seconds to decide on what I want. I ordered the cheeseburger:
DSC02141 Holy crap, it was good! Sure, it tastes just as a burger should…which is why I really liked it. It had this pure meaty taste, free of any unpronounceable and suspicious ingredients.
DSC02140 The vegetables were fresh, not limp and stale like the ones in McDonald’s. And the bun was plump and and crusty on the outside after being grilled with the burger, not flat and soggy like the ones in Burger King.
DSC02143 Now, on to the fries:
DSC02142 Truthfully, after hearing so many raves about it, I was a bit disappointed. It definitely tasted much fresher than the ones in other fast food restaurants, but it just wasn’t that…great. Just something about the fried-taste turned me off. This surprised me because I used to love fries to the point of devouring two Super-size McDonald’s fries a day. I wonder if my taste preferences have changed? I’ll have to give fries another go sometime to make sure.

In the evening, Victoria, my host and one of my dad’s most faithful disciples, invited me out for dinner. We went for a short walk by the San Leandro beach (beautiful!), then hopped off to a Mexican restaurant nearby called El Torito.

As soon as we sat down the waiter served us some chips with salsa:
DSC02148 This was definitely not packaged crap like Tostitos! It was fresh-cooked in oil, and came hot and crispy to our table.

Victoria ordered the Shrimp Fajitas:
DSC02151 Succulent shrimp sautéed in jalapeño-garlic butter with guajillo chile sauce

It came with a plate of rice, guacamole, and sweet corn cake:
DSC02150 And of course some warm and soft corn tortillas.
DSC02152 I ordered a summer special, the Camarones Yucatan:
DSC02149 Tender shrimp, fresh vegetables, and chile-citrus sauce cooked together in a banana leaf for a uni
que flavor. Served with esquite de maiz and rice.

Looks good, covered in the banana leaf…But oh so disappointing when I revealed the contents!
DSC02153 Tender shrimp? No way! They were dry, tough, and chewy. I wondered if it was really squid in disguise! But Victoria was kind enough to share 70% of her shrimp with me. I felt kind of bad, but she ladled them into my plate before I could protest.
DSC02156 Though the shrimp was practically inedible, everything else was delicious, even the rice, which was cooked with tomatoes and spices.
DSC02157The esquite de maiz was basically cooked sweet corn drenched in butter with some queso. It was good at first bite, but then the richness of the butter and cream got rather cloying.
DSC02159 The best thing about this dish though was the sweet corn cake! Freaking amazing! Think of the most luscious, moist, and flavorful corn cake, and there you have it! I could have had a whole loaf of this stuff!

Good food aside, I had such a fabulous time with Victoria. I know some of you may think it may be awkward to hang out with someone older than me by twenty-more years, but I feel so blessed that I am able to connect with people of all ages through our common faith in Christ. Cultural and racial differences aside, we are similar in so many areas, and I felt so comfortable and free to converse with her about anything from God to traveling.

So that was Sunday. I’ve still got some more great eats to share, but in the interest of keeping this post less painful and short, I’ll drag this vacation out to another post. Yay or nay?

Oh, and guess what? I might be having a blogger meet-up tomorrow! YAAAAY!!

I have a new love for Mexican food, and would love to find a really good authentic restaurant around here. The place you went to looks awesome, besides the shrimp that is, but I’m not much of a shrimp gal anyways ;)

Yay for conquering another one of your fear foods. I’m glad to hear that this trip was just so amazing for you!

Don’t be turned off all fries by In-N-Outs fries. They’re a lot different than others! They need more salt in my opinion. I used to love their burgers when I ate red meat. I’m glad you conquered that fear!!

Double wows and yays for you all around. rying, enjoying and now maybe a bit fussier! In and Out is not here but I applaud fast food that goes for fresh. A friend of mine when forced with fast food – orders something special – no onions, extra onions – so he gets the burgers that haven’t been sitting around. Fresh chips and salsa, hold the shrimp! Works for me!

There’s no place like home, glad your safely back!

I’ve never been to IN-N-Out before. The burger looks great – not greasy at all, and doesn’t look like the typical fast food burger. The Mexican looks awesome – sorry your shrimp wasn’t good. I love fresh chips – so yummy. I want to re-create the corn cake!!!

Have fun at the meet-up!

Okay, next time you order at In-and-Out you’ve got to order your burger “animal style”–they’ll grill the onions for you….yum!

I say yay on another vacay food post. Congrats on conquering another food fear. I’m so happy you’re making progress.

Hooray for In-N-Out. It’s been a while since I’ve had a cheese burger from there. I live near one too. LOL. Next time get them animal style. You’ll love it!!!

Hmm…my fav fries always have to be skin on fries…with some sort of cajun seasoning…yumm!! Don’t give up on fries just yet…you just need to find fries that you’ll enjoy :)

I love In&Out but I don’t think their fries are anything special. I’d go there for the burgers alone. McDonalds is better for fries. Actually I prefer thick cut fries with lots of spices. Or even better – sweet potatoes!

I love Mexican food! So sorry the shrimp dish wasn’t good!

I am SO SO proud of you!!!! In-N-Out is actually a pretty respectable fast food place. I still haven’t eaten there. Someday. I hear they have a secret menu but I forget what is on it. I want to say “crazy fries” or “animal fries” or something? Just regular fries with special sauce… I forget.

But El Torito – I LOVE IT. I haven’t been there in a while; I kind of forgot about it. Must go back soon.

Love In-n-Out!!! My husband’s parents live in Alameda (the little island right next to Oakland) and we stuff our faceswith burgers whenever we’re in town. Love the bay area too — it’s absolutely beautiful. ~Mina

Wow I’m glad the burger was good… I’m going to have to head to the west coast one of these days… it would be tragic if you no longer liked fries… but I think no fast food fry can really compare to McDs (even though I hate that place!)…

Maybe? Lol… so excited to hear who the *fabulous* bloggers are hahahahahah

You just can’t beat In and Out burgers. I don’t what they put in those things to make them so dang good!

I not a big fan of fries. Once in a while a will eat them with lots of ketchup or fry sauce.

The Mexican food looks really great!

For years my brother in law would talk about this burger chain after he visited LA, and my son begged me to take him when we went, and you are right we were not disappointed! I agree fries last about one or two and then I am over that fried taste! The rest of the food looks great, and corn cakes in a chain here called Chevy’s is great, about the only good thing they have though…

Reply

Pam July 22, 2009 at 1:39 am

I have only eaten at an In and Out Burger twice in my life and I love their burgers – next time order it “animal style” and you will get grilled onions – yum. I’ve never cared for their fries though so I am not surprised that you didn’t love them. Red Robin has great fries! Congratulations on facing another food fear – I am so darn proud of you girl!

Kim July 22, 2009 at 1:41 am

Oh congrats! In-N-Out was one of my challenges a while ago. Like you, I was a little disappointed with the fries. I’ve had better :) Wow, I’m happy to say that I’ve tried enough fries at this point to make that judgment :)

You have the best damn attitude in the world! Let me tell you, there is NOONE that does it like you nor does it as well. You know how to just go for the gold and make life worth it! I admire you SOOO much and you should be so proud of what an incredible human being you truly are!

haha I knew it was In-n-Out! It’s honestly the most popular fast food place in all of california! It has all fresh ingredients and you hit the nail on the head with describing how they go about preparing their food. But unfortunately you were also right about their fries. It’s sad but their fries just suck. They think that they are making the better ones because they are “healthier” but they are just sort of bland and blah. Not worth it. But i guess it was about going and trying it and just enjoying the full experience, right?!

El Torito is supposed to be a pretty good Mexican place but I;ve never had it. Even though it wasnt the best, I’m just glad you had such an incredible time with Victoria. I feel very much like you in that I can have the BEST time with people 2 even 3 times my age. Its about the conversation and the enjoyment of one another’s company rather than connecting on the same age level. I think its great to be able to share in relationships with people of all ages, sizes, religions, cultures, etc. Thats what makes life so worth living!

Congrats on trying out your fear food. I love IN-N-Out. It is my go-to place when I crave for fast food. Do you know about their secret menu? I like my hamburger protein-style (bunless, just wrapped with lettuce).

Ruby July 22, 2009 at 3:58 am

You go girl! Well done for taking the challenge! As for the fries, McD’s fries are different from regular: they add “natural flavor” to them, aka beef flavour. To replace when they used to deep-fry in cow-fat. Yuck!

I love the sounds of typing, too. It always helps me relieve stress to just sit and write and that sounds, even when I am at work, relieves stress all on it’t own.

Congrats on going to In and Out. I think it is awesome that you recognized that you did not like the fries, it is the little victories that count!

Congrats on yet another milestone Sophia!! You know, a lot of fast food hamburgers aren’t even as bad as most people think. Besides the sketchy beef and sodium, fast food burgers are often a better choice than salads at real restaurants!

Maybe it’s cause I’m from potato country, but I’m a fry snob. I rarely order them unless I know they’re going to be nop notch ;) Same with shrimp actually. You’re right, it’s completely inedible when overdone…too bad! At least the fresh tortilla chips were delish! Now I want nachos…. :P

I’ve heard so much about In-N-Out. It looks like such a fun place. We have a similar burger joint called 5 guys that people rave about around here, but I only with they had meatless options on the menu. Oh well, I hear the fries are awesome! :)

Still so happy to see you had a wonderful time. I love seeing this recap of your trip. So much fun!

Love ya girl!
