in eating out

Phew! I finally updated my blogroll! It sure is one hefty list! There are just too many lovely blogs, but too little time and not enough saliva to drool over all of them! If you’re a faithful reader of mine and I have somehow idiotically missed you out, let me know so I can add  you in!

Okay, a lot of you are gonna be flabbergasted with me when I announce this: I am not a dog-lover. Please don’t send me hate mail. But I’ve never met such a devoted affection for dogs as I when I moved to America. The idea that dogs are actually considered part of a family and referred to as a person was very strange to me.

Perhaps it doesn’t help that I’m Korean and Koreans eat dogs. Yes, that’s true, I’ve actually seen the carcasses of dogs being skinned and hung to dry in Korea. And no, I don’t feel good about it and I will never ever eat dog stew, but still, I’m just really not a dog person. Especially since I’ve been chased, bitten, and barked at by dogs countless of times.

My best friend Jingwen recently got a puppy, and she kept trying to bring her along when we met up. To be honest I wasn’t really thrilled with the idea. The image of a barking, salivating, hyper little attention-seeking creature did not appeal to me.

Then she finally bought her puppy yesterday night to our church’s youth group, and it was love at first sight.

DSC02765
Just look at that cute nose and the doeful eyes! The floppy ears, the furry paws! Aaaaawwww~~
DSC02768
Her name is Muffin and she’s only three months old! I couldn’t believe how quiet and shy and docile she was.

Yup, I think I’m gonna have to reconsider my prejudice against dogs.

Oh, and I also baked something new for my youth group!
DSC02770
Don’t you love the crisp crumble on top?
DSC02771
This was apple cream cheese pie, with an almond shortcrust pastry on the bottom, layered with thinly-sliced apples, loaded with cream cheese filling, and then topped with almond streusel crumbles. Let me know if you’d like the recipe.

It smelled so good out of the oven that I couldn’t resist sampling a tiny slice before I brought it to church, so there was a small gap in the pie, but oh well. I was just making sure it tasted good enough for my dear church friends! And it was.

Lunch today was finally out to the Soup Spoon with Liwen, Wengang, and Suyun! I guess they felt bad for changing the venue so suddenly last week after I requested to dine there. They were so nice to remember and bring me there. This was the third time I visited the Soup Spoon, and I still love it!

I got the smoked salmon in a wrap this time:
DSC02776
“Smoked salmon, lettuce, tomato, alfalfa sprouts, red onion, tartar sauce”
DSC02777
This wrap was so flavorful and fresh. The vegetables was crunchy, and the smoked salmon was just perfect.
DSC02779
I wish Panera sold wraps, too. And they should have smoked salmon in their menu, don’t you agree?

I’ll be eating out a bit more often the next coming two weeks because it’s my last two weeks in Singapore, and I’ll be doing last gatherings with my old friends before I leave. It’s just so sad…It’s like losing my friends all over again. Of course we can keep in touch through emails and facebook and stuff, but it’s just not the same…

Question of the day: Are you a dog or a cat person?

I think I like cats better. They’re independent, neat, predatory creatures, and I admire that. And I love how they clean themselves up and bury/hide their own poop, even without training!

P.S. Rebecca from Unintuitive Eating tried my pumpkin/black bean croquettes! This made me so happy! Check out her amazing picture here!

Cute doggie! I am a dog and cat person. I love them both. But I can understand not liking dogs – especially if you’ve been bitten and chased. One thing that surprised me about Taiwan was how much they loved dogs. It seemed like everyone toted around a little dog dressed in a sweater. They were allowed everywhere – even restaurants.

Love the pie!

We are such dog people. I love how my chihuahua sits in kitchen just waiting for a crumb to fall when I’m cooking. Cats don’t do things like that.

Hahahahaha I’m surprised how we think alike! I’m also decidedly NOT a dog person and one of my many culture shocks when I moved to Canada was how people treat dogs here. I’ve been here for 7 years and I’m still not over it! They actually treat them like people and that is so strange to me. I come from a land where dogs are animals and are treated as such, we don’t eat them, but we certainly don’t let them crawl in bed with us!!
I love crisp crumble on anything!

That is a crazy cute puppy!! If I had to pick, I’d say I’m a dog person. I looooove taking my mom’s dogs for walks, harder to do with her cat!

What an adorable puppy. I’m glad you softened up to the sweetie that baby is!

I only have a cat but I’m equally a dog lover. Dogs are just way to much maintenance with the college life.

Aww! At my core, I’m a cat person. I grew up with cats. I have two cats now. I just love how they are so independent and snarky. My cats are only nice to me, and I think I like that too. Haha. However, my family did get a dog when I was 10 years old and I LOVED that dog. They’ve had dogs ever since. I’m sure I’ll get a dog some day…when I have a yard big enough and patience to deal with chewed up shoes. Cats are much lower maintenance.

awh that puppy is so cute! my boss just bought one like that buts a more of a caramel colour! That apple crumble looks amazing! i’m defs a cat person, dogs freak me out. I only really like two dogs in the entire world and they’re my aunts the rest scare me =\

teresa April 18, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I’m totally with you, I’m not much of a dog person either. It’s not that I hate them, I just can’t handle how high maintenence they are, I already have a hubby and two kids to tend to lol! I DO love cats though, I used to have three and I miss them so much.

The wraps look heavenly! I’m going to have to give a smoked salmon wrap a try, great idea!

my eyes grew so wide when I saw that puppy! that is beyond adorable! I grew up with a cat, so cats are my first love. I was always scared of dogs, until my parents got a golden retriever when I was 15. (our cat was not pleased) She’s great, but I’m still partial to cats.

Byoooteeful pie!! Seriously, the cream cheese + apples + streusel is an inspired combo!

I love all animals, I really do. But I’m inexplicably afraid of them ALL. I have no idea why, but I’m scared of any creature that moves that isn’t human. I won’t even touch starfish. Or turtles. Even though I really want to. So sad. :(

Pearl April 18, 2009 at 7:43 pm

awww sophia! that puppy just melted my heart.

you know, i grew up in a family where dogs were.. pets. they belong outside, they were for protection, they were NOT part of the family.

and my family likes dogs.

so unsurprisingly, i ended up loving dogs, too. except i didn’t love them in the same way my family did.

i want a dog to be like, a baby, almost. like i want a puppy to stay indoors, to kiss and cuddle and to play and watch grow up. my parents all agree that dogs are ADORABLE, but they’re just iffy about the idea of dogs staying in doors. as for me, i couldn’t imagine putting something/someone i loved so much OUTSIDE at night, when it’s cold and dark.

and i am most definitely a dog person; i’m actually an “all-types-of-animal” person, but i found out (through an embarrassing tutoring session) that i was allergic to cats. *sigh*

i LOVE smoked salmon!! more than anything!! just about ;) and god that pup is SO cute, looks like a toy poodle breed? is it? if i were to get a puppy i would get one like that!

to answer your Q about bulgur, it’s one of my favourite grains – it has plenty of proteins/fibre, and like a chewier, bigger counterpart of couscous. one of your mix-it bowls made with bulgur would be amazing!

Aw yay I made your blogroll! =)

YES! i knew one day you’d have a change of heart about dogs…or at least ONE dog would win you over! That Muffin is pretty darn cute. Ugh ya, when I was younger and visited the North of Vietnam I saw a dog being roasted on one of those rotisserie spits..and I asked my parents what it was and they told me “a goat.” But I knew goats didn’t have super long tails!!!! And there’s those dog markets like the ones you descrive in Korea. EWW! I’m feeling sad for you because you have to pack up and leave Singapore, but I really hope the next 2 weeks are full of FUN and spent with good friends!

That puppy is adorable. I am a fanof both dogs and cats but love how independent cats can be so I have one (or should I say I am owned by one!) named Max.

Your apple pie looks amazing!

Oh my gosh, what type of dog is that? If I weren’t a dog lover already, that one would turn me into one.

And yes, Panera should definitely have smoked salmon. Or any kind of salmon. Lots of it. I love salmon, can you tell?

Delicious dessert!

Mmm, that wrap looks so good! Maybe if we all send in letters to Panera requesting smoked salmon, they might put it on their menu.

Have a nice day. <3

I’m a dog person, allergic to cats unfortunately as I only discovered what fun personalities they have. We did not have cats growing up, my dad is very much a dog person so that formed my initial impressions but I can see what great pets they are if only I could be in the same room! =)

I am not a dog OR a cat person! I used to be terrified of them both. While I’m no longer afraid of them, I don’t like them very much. The stray cats who pee in my alleyway and make it reek don’t help… nor does my neighbor’s annoying dog who yaps and whines all night. Yes, I can see a cute cat or dog… but that doesn’t mean I like them!!

Thanks for the blogroll add :) I’m a dog and cat person…hehe…love animals in general! Oh and it was so funny that you had mentioned Panera…I haven’t heard that word in years since I moved back here from the states…brought back memories..as I used to enjoy their soup in a bread bowl! But I do agree that they should have wraps as well.

I love smoked salmon and I agree about Panera. Although the one here has been so insanely busy lately and limiting their internet time that I have to find a new place to hangout on Saturdays.

I am neutral on dogs. Don’t mind then but don’t love them. They require way to much attention where my cat is anti-social which is perfect for me.

I’am thinking of getting a golden Retriever as a puppy for my daughter. Is this a right choice? Is a Golden Retriever good with small children? My daughter is 6 years old.
